Sr. Farhana Miah Email: [email protected] Course Dates: Oct 30 – Dec 8 7 th Grade Science 2017-2018 Course Syllabus 2 nd MP Course Description: This marking period we will analyze data from earthquakes and volcanoes, and charts that represent the long history of Earth, drawing conclusions about how these forces of nature provoke short-term, long-term, and permanent changes to the surface of the planet. We will study what matter can be described by physical properties and be identified by chemical properties. Students how matter and energy actively interacts with in so many ways. Students will investigate how interaction of matter and energy can cause pollutants that enter or remain in the environment, which has consequences on living and nonliving things. Students will come up with ideas to prevent pollutions and preserve a healthy living that causes less pollutant . OBJECTIVES: As a result of this course, you will be able to: Explain what matter is and how matter has physical and chemical properties. Explain what energy is and how matter and energy interact with each other. Explain interaction of energy and matter can cause pollution. Understand that human play a big role in causing pollution. 7th Grade Science 2017-2018 Course Syllabus 2nd MP

MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES: All materials and supplies must be available with you every class meeting. You need:

1. Folder where you can keep your loose-leaf so you to write down the Aim and Do Now so you can use them as a study guide for the exam. Yes, You must take notes!

2. Loose-leaf paper 3. Pencil, pen, markers, highlighters (anything else you need to write with) 4. Notebook Composition notebook 5. Post it 6. Construction Paper 7. Scotch Tape 8. Scissor 9. Ruler

EXPECTATIONS: You are expected:

• To have your all supplies mentioned above at all times. • Be ready on the desk every class meeting before I come to class. • Start your aim and do now right the way. • Be ready share your ideas about science when randomly selected.

CLASSWORK: Include:

• Taking notes; • Participate in class, • Doing the do now and any other activity that is done as group. • Every student in class is required to participate, take notes so you can

use that for any quizzes or exam given during the marking period. PROJECTS & HOMEWORK: Students are expected to work on one project during the marking period, which I will provide with instruction ahead of the time. Homework must be done on time. Late assignments will not be accepted without a valid reason such as the doctor’s note of being absent, parents’ note that an emergency occurred in the family and so on. Failing to submit a valid reason, points will be deducted from the student’s grade. Assignments must be submitted to the teacher during class period on the day of the deadline or before the deadline. RESUBMISSIONS: A student can resubmit assigned work if allowed by the teacher and during the given time frame. (A student can resubmit the work if asked for revisions, correct errors, incorporate feedback, etc.)

TEST & QUIZZES: There will be 2 test and 2 quizzes each marking period. I will provide you with a study guide. This is an independent test, which means you are not allowed to use notes, talk or cheat during test period. If you are caught doing any of those things,

a zero will be given and there will be no make-up exams unless you have a valid reason why you were unable to take the test. A valid absent note from parents must be provided. ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY: You are expected:

• To attend class period as assigned in the school’s schedule. • To be in class at the time of second bell and ready with all the required

textbooks, notebook, agenda book and other supplies. • If you are late from Physical Education, Arabic, Lunch or any other excuse

must have a pass otherwise their class readiness points will be deducted.

COMMUNICATION: • Students can communicate with the teacher during class period and lunch. • The student can also meet with during teacher’s preparation period with prior

appointment or request to meet the teacher(s) during the academic-behavior meeting period.

• The student can also contact the teacher via the school’s website. Also via email provided above.

CELL PHONES, COMPUTERS, AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Be respectful, be responsible and be honest about any communication devices that are not allowed in class without taking permission from the teacher. If any communication device is found with a student, the device will be confiscated until further notice.

FOOD AND DRINK: Food and drink are not allowed under any circumstances. You may speak to me if you have any condition. PLAGIARISM/ACADEMIC OFFENSES: Copying information, cutting and pasting information from the Internet (plagiarism) is strictly prohibited. Any student who is caught doing so will face consequences and assignment will earn a zero. Any student who copies any work, project or any other assigned work will also earn a zero, while the student who allows his peer to copy work, project and or any other assigned work will also obtain point deduction.

Classroom guidelines and consequences for not following the guidelines: 1. Must follow classroom guidelines at all times. 2. Do not talk while instruction is given. 3. Sit facing forward when lesson is given. 4. You must raise your hand when a question asked or you have a question must raise your hands. 5. Wait to be called on. Do not call out. 6. Keep your desk, your surrounding neat, clean and organized at all times.

REWARDS:

• You are expected to aim high, do your best and be the best version of you, which is self-rewarding.

• Plus, throughout the school year there are many rewards in school. • In addition to that there will be unannounced rewards from me. • Show me what you can do and I will show you unexpected rewards.

Let’s aim for reward not consequences!

CONSEQUENCES:

1. Verbal Warning 2. Take away 5 participation points. 3. Speak with student one-on-one. 4. Write an apology letter stating how you can improve your behavior. 5. Meet with all subject teachers/phone call home. GRADING POLICY AND EVALUATIONS:

To determine your final grade in the course, the total grade will be determined by adding the total percentage earned by you by the total possible points.

The total percentage earned can be converted to letter grades as follows: 93-100% = A 84-92% = B 75-83% = C 65-74% = D <65% = F Quiz/Exams………………………..65%
