The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Unforgiving Servant We all want to be forgiven, right? This servant was on top of the world. The king just forgave his debt. Now that’s what I’m talking about! So what happened??? The servant just doesn’t get it. But why? It’s easy enough to figure out. Right? Well apparently not because the forgiven missed a very important step: that he must go out and do the same—forgive. Forgiveness is a heart issue. You can’t put a Band-Aid on it. Can you think of a situation in your life where you were called to forgive and how difficult that was? Maybe it was very personal and something you wouldn’t share with others. Or maybe it was very public and is now out of your hands. Regardless, forgiveness is the answer to your sadness and pain. I know you didn’t do anything. It’s ok. God knows and is at work. Why does Jesus ask us to do something that is so hard and unfair, like forgive someone who has hurt us deeply? How will we ever trust again? I guess we may never understand until we need to be forgiven at such a painful level. “Let us pray. Lord, teach me to forgive.” Or, maybe you’re the one that needs to be forgiven. You messed up royally; now how are you going to get turned around? Put your pride aside. Say you’re sorry, go to confession and ask Mary to help lead you back to Jesus. Be on a mission with a vengeance to make things right and good again in Christ.

Don Antonio's Dispatch…

This Thursday marks the Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist. St. Pius X was formed partially from St. Matthew parish in Flint, so we wish our mother parish a very blessed feast day!! Also, since we are finishing up with the lectionary year that uses St. Matthew as the primary Gospel, I thought I’d give you a few facts about his account of the Gospel. St. Matthew himself was a tax collector, and was also called Levi. He was called directly by Jesus to follow Him, and in return St. Matthew held a dinner at which Jesus and tax collectors attended. Caravaggio has a very famous painting of the calling and martyrdom of St. Matthew, which are both located in the church San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. He is said to have been martyred, perhaps in Persia. The Gospel according to Matthew is traditionally the first Gospel, because of the way that early Church Fathers recorded the four canonical Gospels (other false gospels were written that were not accepted as part of Divine Revelation). By Tradition St. Matthew wrote his account in Hebrew or Aramaic, which would have appealed to the first Christians, the Jewish converts. At some point, the Gospel was translated into Greek (though we have no extant older versions in Hebrew or Aramaic that I know of). St. Matthew depicts Jesus as the new Moses, the prophet that Moses told the people to wait for, and to whom they were to listen. Just as Moses gave the Chosen People the Law from Mt. Sinai, so Jesus gave the new law to the people in the Sermon on the Mount. Moses was also attributed with writing the first five books of the Old Testament (the Pentateuch). The Gospel according to Matthew is easily divisible into five parts. St. Matthew reminds us to preach the Gospel by our life and by our words in ways that our own people can understand. He is also a great inspiration that, even if we don’t seem like the person God would call to covert the world, it can happen. May St. Matthew inspire us this week and always!!

OUR WEEKLY COLLECTION

St. Paul writes about taking up a collection for the Church in Jerusalem: “…not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your surplus at the present time should supply their needs…” (2 Cor. 8:13-14a). Help Spread the FAITH weekend Sept 23-24—Thank you for making last year’s Help Spread the FAITH Appeal a success. By supporting St. Pius X parish and our diocese in this Help Spread the FAITH Appeal, it enables us to carry out evangelization efforts in St. Pius X, our diocese and the nation. Your support ensures that FAITH magazine will continue to be sent to every Catholic home in the Diocese of Lansing. You will ensure that the Outreach Mass will continue to be broadcast and the U.S. bishops will continue their national evangelization efforts. Your support will help us continue to answer Christ’s call to reach out with the Gospel message.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 17, 2017

ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC SCHOOL

FAITH MOVING FORWARD Website: www.spxparish.com

It has truly been a great start to our new year. We are above our budgeted enrollment even though we are down in numbers from previous years. Still, the desire and determination to do more for our church and school is there within the hearts of our staff and so I feel comfortable saying that great things are still ahead for us. This past week was truly exciting as the kids went to Mass, attended a Divine Chaplet of Mercy led by our religious education director, Cindee McColley, and we finished the week off with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. It is truly an awesome feeling to see how CATHOLIC our school is becoming. Now please do not get me wrong, I feel we have always been Catholic, but what we are trying to do is to be intentionally more Catholic. This means that we have to set aside all the other things and make sure we put God first in our school and our initiatives. Is it wrong to try and be intentionally more Catholic you ask? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact it is through our intentional habits that we become more virtuous and therefore in turn more holy. So, we are really trying to be intentional in our faith and prayerfully look to create our future church leaders. Please say a prayer for our middle school children as next week will begin something new and never done before at our school; we will have Masses once a month for only middle school children so Father Anthony can be more intentional in shepherding our young men and women in their spiritual lives. Great things are happening at this great school!

Wednesday evening Bible Study begins in October —Mark your calendar for these dates: October 11 & 25, November 8 & 29, December 13, January 10 & 24, and February 7 & 21. The plan for this year’s bible study is to study the letters

found in the New Testament such as Galatians, Ephesians, etc. These letters speak to the people and give direction on how to live our Christian lives. We also plan to include some study on apologetics to strengthen our own understanding of our Catholic faith and how to share it. Lastly, our hope is to bring in Father Mathias Thelen who has a background in apologetics (check him out on YouTube) to further our understanding and excitement for this year’s bible study experience. If anyone is interested in a Tuesday morning bible study, call the church office at 235-8574.
