Waimea College has launched a new program aimed at getting boys back into reading. How often do you read and what do you enjoy about it?

Organisers of the Sprig & Fern Summer Fare are urging people to be wary of the alcohol-free zones ahead of Richmond’s largest street party. The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare will be held on Friday March 23 from 5:30pm to 10pm and Richmond Unlimited spokesperson Ste-ve Page says participants should be “respectful” of the events poli-cies, which includes no alcohol in the alcohol-free zones, otherwise they will be removed from the event. “This is our chance to get to-gether and celebrate the end of summer. The Sprig & Fern Summer Fare has been a huge success every year that it has been held, so we are just reminding people to stay safe and have fun,” he says. This year’s theme will be medieval and there will be plenty of great prizes from the event’s sponsors for best dressed.More than 3000 people attended last year’s Summer Fare and that number is expected to increase with a larger array of food stalls.

Leila Byrd, Richmond.

“It’s relaxing but I don’t read often. I’m too busy.”

Barbara Petrie-Henderson, Richmond.

“I like reading biographies and travel books. I don’t like books that aren’t true. In the winter I read one once a fort-night.”

Vicky Hamilton, Richmond.

“I love reading biographies and true stories. I’ve read all of the Janet Frame books. I buy lots of books because I buy them for my grandkids.”

John Coghlan, Richmond.

“I don’t do a lot of reading but what I really read is history. It’s sort of related to studying family history.”

Organisers urge Summer Fare goers to be ‘respectful’

Temaire Heta, 5, with the sunflower she grew at Tapaw-era Area School. Noticing some concrete tubs being free of plants, she took the initiative to put some sun-flower seeds in them late last year. Before they grew, Temaire aided by her mother, Lisa Carleton, decided to make some temporary flowers made of tins to fill in the gaps. Photo: Susan Fenemor.

Port Nelson has given the Tasman Dis-trict Council a nice shot in the arm fol-lowing last December’s costly floods – providing a “special dividend” of $4 million. It was announced this week by Port chairman Nick Patterson that both shareholders – Nelson City Council and TDC – would get $4 million each. “Port Nelson has the ability to make available to the shareholders this special dividend, which we see as very timely and which we hope will be well received, given the costs to the councils of remedial works

following the recent adverse weather events.”Nick Patterson says the decision to pay the fully imputed special dividend of $8 million came about after a review of the business environment the port operates in. TDC deputy mayor Tim King says council will discuss the money before deciding on what to do with it. He said the usual course of action would be to use it for debt repayment, but with the

costs from Decembers floods, council may decide to spend it on that.

increase they are facing.”But protest organiser Ethel Murdoch says a 127 per cent raise is “disgusting” and the residents will “fight to the end”.Michael estimated just ten protesters and said it was confined to the morning. When told the protesters were back out on the road and had tri-pled in size by the afternoon he said he was not aware of it.Ethel says the support was huge, with the honk-ing of horns almost non-stop.Representatives from Age Concern and Mary-an’s Street’s office joined the protest. After the protest four of the signs were left on the side of the road, one of which Michael admitted putting in the rubbish. He says he didn’t know what happened to the other three.

There does appear to be some light at the end of the tunnel though for the dispute. Local businessman John Davies, the father-in-law of Michael, has come on board to try to sort out the dispute and reach a settlement between the residents and owners. Michael says he holds little faith in the nego-tiation though. “There is someone negotiating from the committee at the moment. I’m happy with that procedure but I very much doubt it will have a conclusion because I believe the commit-tee will not accept the negotiator’s outcome.”Meanwhile the story continues to attract further attention with enquiries now coming from na-tional media outlets, including TVNZ.Ethel says the more attention the better. “We’ve tried every other way, we fought last year and we still got the increase. The more attention we can get for our cause the better.”

Amber’s ready to roll at Trolley DerbyWith less than two weeks to go until the 2012 Roberton’s Trolley Derby, Redwood Valley’s Amber Holmes is raring to go.Amber, 13, will enter for the very first time, along with

her 15 year-old sister Brit, thanks to some encouragement from her father Simon Holmes. “I talked to her into,” he says. “I had been to other years and it’s always a good day out. I gauged Amber’s interest in it last year and I thought we should have a crack at this.”So since last March, Simon has spent a couple of

hundred hours turning Amber’s bike into a fully functional trolley. With just over a week until race day down Collingwood St, Amber is going

to spend the next few days testing it through her suburb, because of its quiet, hilly roads. “I’m very [excited]. But I don’t want to crash,” says Amber. The Waimea College student helped paint the trolley, which features her old bike wheels on the front. Simon says it only cost $50 to build and will be entering it in the Backyard Brilliance competition for trolleys made under $200. “It’s cost virtually nothing except labour to build it.”Amber will be entered in the 13-15 age group with Brit in the Monarch of the Hill.

Road trip for NBSA convoy of classics will wind its way around the up-per South Island in honour of Nelson Building Society. The Vintage Car Club has brought together 17 veteran vehicles and counting, everything from a near century old 1918 Buick, to a comparably modern 1977 Tri-umph.The five-day tour will visit all seven NBS branches from Nelson to Greymouth, covering over 800 kilome-tres. The Vintage Car Club will take the opportunity to personally thank the people of NBS for the support they show to their club and the community, and to congratulate them, as New Zealand’s oldest Building Society, on their coming 150 year anniversary. The tour sets off from the Nelson NBS branch on March 15, with cars joining and leaving the tour wher-ever it suits them.

Taking steps for cancer cureSeveral thousand steps were taken to get closer to a cancer cure, with thousands of volunteers trekking diligently around Saxton Field to raise funds for the Cancer Society over the weekend.Brightly dressed, they braved the low overnight temperatures. “It must have been five degrees at four am,” says Rachael Watson. But even the cold couldn’t bring down their spirits. “Everyone carried on; it was good. It was never a lonely walk.” Rachael, and her sisters Nicky and Tracey, took part in the event in honour of their sister who had been lost to cancer. Along with their team, they dressed as but-terflies to symbolise the spirits of those lost being released. The volunteers’ efforts were re-warded with a bright, sunny morning, when the closing cere-mony was followed by the final lap, which everyone who had been in-volved in the Relay walked. Purple balloons were released as the sur-vivors led the 1600 strong crowd around the oval in a victory lap. Many at the relay had been touched by cancer, whether it was the sur-vivors, walking a lap to open the event, or those with family and friends who had battled it.

Rotoiti’s classic boat showSt Arnaud was flooded with some of the country’s most pristine antique boats on the weekend as the annual NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show came to town. While predictions of bad weather failed to deter hardy boaties who turned out on Saturday, a much bigger crowd on Sunday enjoyed the on-lake racing that was rescheduled from Saturday, as well as on-land viewing of classic steam boats and replicas, an extensive collection of wooden boats from the Picton Clinker Club, sailing boats of all ages and sizes, veteran Hamilton jets, lovingly crafted cedar kayaks and funky old dinghies.Prizes were given at an awards dinner at Rotoiti Lodge on Saturday night, with the Jens Hansen Cup for best ves-sel overall going to the 16 foot mini-tug Little Toot. The fully functioning rep-lica was designed by the owner, Clin-ton Skelton of Nelson, built in 2008 in Valencia Spain and shipped home this year. The award for best new craft went to a 14 f00t double-ended day sailer, just completed and, owned by Gary Drum-mond of Motueka. The Port Nelson House Parts award for best rowing craft went to the 12 foot clinker row boat, Maggie, owned by John McConway of Picton. The CWF Hamilton Trophy for the best jet propelled boat went to Butt, built in 1963 built and owned by Anthony Con-nolly of Christchurch. The Johnson Family Trophy for the best

sail-powered craft went to the 19 foot mullet Naiad, owned by Matthew Kid-son of Nelson. The best restoration was awarded to the frostbite sailing dinghy Corsair owned by Paul Baragwanath of Auckland. The Mathieson Jeffcott Trophy for the best motor powered craft went to Ross Birchall of Rotorua for his English built aluminium albatross class boat, built in 1953 for Sir William Stevenson. A fortnightly column written by local midwives is coming to the Waimea Weekly thanks to the support of Paula’s Tiny Tots. The column will give tips from the stages of preg-nancy right up until preschool age and will include anything from sun protection, clothing to water births and nutrition.Paula’s Tiny Tots owner Ant Holder says midwives are an integral part of any parents’ pregnancy stage. “Everyone has a midwife and needs that support go-ing right through pregnancy coming up to the big day,” says Ant. “Midwives are there to give mums and dads support, guidance and information and there is a quite a special bond with the family and the midwife leading up to the birth of your child.”Midwife Wendy de Groot confirmed the statistic that 100 per cent of pregnant women have a mid-wife and the column would be “hugely positive” for the industry. “It’s going to get key information to the people who need it. Even for people thinking about having a baby or know someone who is having a baby, this column will educate anyone that reads it.”Ant wants the column to give midwives a voice in the Waimea-Tasman community. “I would say par-ents are often looking for answers and advice. Mid-wives have been through it all before and have plenty of information on parent’s needs. If parents need questions answered, this fortnightly editorial will do exactly that and cover a wide variety of pregnancy related subjects.”It is set to be launched in the next issue.

Autumn has arrived in full glory, and hopefully some of those leaves, that are turning into beautiful shades of orange and deep reds, have not all been blown away with our weekends winds.

My focus for the week: - Cotton on Kids. This is a wonderful place to discover the latest in Kids clothing at Cotton On. Shop for boys - fleece, jackets, tees, pants, denim, polos, shirts, shorts, tanks, and for girls - dresses, skirts, jewellery and hair accessories and so much more. The sparkles, frills and tulle are every little girl’s dress up dreams come true. While you feast in the fairy tale surroundings of the store, your little ones can play, happily colouring in and be entertained while still having you in their view.

I like to think the most important thing to remember is that you can wear fabulous clothes and gorgeous shoes, but you have got to have a good spirit on the inside. That is what is going to make you ready to face each and every day.

Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island

Heroes of the past and potential future commanders welcomed the HMNZS Wellington to Tasman Bay as the New Zealand Navy Vessel opened its decks to the public last weekend.A group of Sea Cadets sped into the Bay on two Zodiacs to meet the ship en route to port while a group of WWII Navy veterans were shown round the 85 metre Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) once it was docked. By all accounts the youngsters and veterans were im-pressed by the Vessel and crew alike. The public were welcomed aboard Wellington on Saturday, which is re-turning home fresh from a mission in the Southern Ocean. The crew of around 40 young men and women steamed to the sub Antarctic, Auckland and Campbell Islands to re-supply and change-out DOC workers studying local flora and fauna. The av-erage age of the crew is 27 and that was reflected on the bridge with young, confident Kiwis setting the course and negotiating the cut to arrive safely in port.Although it wasn’t all smooth sailing on the way to Tasman Bay with the in-

famous West Coat weather causing the OPV to broach and send a few unwary

sailors out of their bunks. Combat system specialist Petty Officer Duncan An-derson, a local lad, says it is a trick for young players. “Testing weather is part of the job, and it was a good test to see who in the crew hadn’t tied down their gear,” says Duncan. HMNZS Wellington uses its 6000 nautical mile range for patrol and surveillance across the Southern Ocean and far into the Pacific. Duncan says they also partic-ipate in war games and com-

bat training. “We have a giant inflatable we call ‘the killer tomato’. We blow it up, drop it off in the ocean and swing back around to use it for target practice,” he says. The HMNZS also does maritime con-trol in Wellington along with search and rescue, humanatarium assistance, disaster relief and support to peace keeping operations. It can conduct helicopter operations with space for its Sea Sprite helicopter. The 25mm Bushmaster Naval gun, re-ferred to as “the pea shooter” is con-trolled from the bridge much like a computer game, complete with video screen. Add two .50 calibre machine guns to the pea shooter and its clear the killer tomato never had a chance.

NEW OWNERS

Local takeaway meets local tavern - a marriage made in heaven! John from Queen Street Fish Supply delivers fresh, hot food to patrons at The Sprig and Fern. Pictured from left are Dan Haynes, Hanan Satherley, John Trewavas and Tyrone Callaghan.

Queen Street Fish Supply has a brand new own-er. A local lad, John Trewavas has been involved in the joinery and building business for the past 35 years and, like a lot of us, he felt like it was time for change in lifestyle. When he heard the local takeaway business was for sale it provid-ed the perfect opportunity to put his plans for change into action.Having been a keen fisherman since childhood John says he recognises a good piece of fish, en-joys eating good fish and he knows how to cook it. To help ensure his success John has kept on all of the previous staff together with a couple of extra talented people to help him out. “It’s not rocket science,” says John. “You just have to stick to the basic principles of consistently offering great products and combine that with fantastic customer service. And the businesses who sup-ply Queen Street Fish Supply have been great, always available and offering excellent advice.”Queen Street Fish Supply offers a range of quality food from fresh, hot, kiwi fish and chips through to gourmet burgers and platters. One area that John is keen to expand on is providing meals to patrons visiting the neighbouring Sprig and

Fern tavern. “We’ve always offered meals from our takeaway menu to the customers at The Sprig, but we’ve expanded on that and now serve plated meals as well. These include steaks, ham steaks, fish, sausages and burgers or even blue cod, all served with chips and salad.

It’s a great way to wind down after a hard day at work – relaxing with one of the Sprig’s own craft beers or non-alcoholic drinks while we cook your dinner.” Queen Street Fish Supply is open 7 days from 4.30pm until 8pm on Monday to Wednesday and until 8.30pm from Thursday until Sunday.

Wakefield Community Council ReportDo come to the Next Meeting of the Council. Why?? Because it is the meeting when the ten year plan for our district will be un-veiled and explained, with TDC councillors and staff attending to answer your questions about the plan. Our last meeting was chaired by Ivan Burrowes. We were addressed by Mayor Richard Kempthorne regarding the pro-posed amalgamation, who is not convinced there will be significant savings in such an amalgamation. The question of representation of the rural advisory committee was raised, but it may not address the needs of Mapua, Brightwater or Wakefield. Other points are sum-marised in another article in this edition.Assistance has been requested by the Wakefield Library to maintain the interior of the building, and they are setting up a drop box for returned books at Hair Raisers sa-lon. The Library is a great resource, and we will liaise with the Wake-field School B.O.T. to see how we could work together on this need. We soon hope to get the mural on the chemist shop wall touched up by an artist. We must thank

Stu Watts and Pete Cobledick for their work on painting the street bollards. The problem of over-grown hedges hindering footpath movement, especially for mobile scooters and prams, was noted and Councillors will survey the village for this. Council have ar-ranged for ongoing work resur-facing the tennis courts. Forward Planning - we would love to hear from people who have ideas for projects the community could and should join together to action. We also discussed the entranceway to Faulkner Bush, McPherson Way signage to be replaced, the ongo-ing public toilet’s mysteries, and the need to tidy up many of the street signs. We appreciated the TDC repainting the white line on the Hill corner on Edward Street. Apparently the Spooners Look-out is being worked on so that the view will soon be restored! Hope to see a good turnout on March 13th for the 10 year plan meeting, 7.30pm at the Anglican Worship Centre.

Wakefield School and Commu-nity PoolThe Wakefield Pool (next to Wakefield School) continues to be a fun and easy local place to go

for a swim this summer. The pool is open to Brightwater and Tapawera residents as well and many cur-rently use the pool on a regu-lar basis. The pool is a great place to cool down and meet up with

friends. It is covered and the average temperature is 27 degrees Celsius. Many families use the pool and many individuals come in to swim lengths. Wake-field School students enjoy regular swimming time during class time and the community can use the pool at lunchtime as well as before and after school. It opens as early as 5.30am closing around 8.30pm stays open from early November until after Easter. The Pool Committee have made significant im-provements to the facility in the last two years. A new pool cover maintains the pool temperature at night and the floors in the changing rooms were re-sealed at the start of the season. We also ensure that we keep a high standard of the basics such as main-tenance and cleanliness. The pool committee is always looking for new members to join our friendly group. You can con-tribute as little or as much as you choose. If you do not wish to be on the committee but still want to be involved with the pool, we need volunteers to help with an occasional pool test. Also if you have never

been inside the pool and would like to have a look around feel free to contact us and we can arrange this for you. Senior citizens pay a reduced rate, and keys for the remainder of the season are still avail-able at a heavily reduced price. For more informa-tion phone Lydia 541 8173

Scouts Founders Day Zone Camp The Wakefield Scout Group took part in the Found-ers Day Zone Camp at Gilbert Lodge, Wairoa Gorge on the weekend of 24 February. Proposed Council AmalgamationAt the recent Wakefield Community Council meeting, a number of key queries regarding the proposed amalgamation of Tasman and Nelson were raised and an-swers provided. Below is a summary of the key points discussed at that meeting. It’s going to happen anyway/Government will force it. This is incorrect. If the more than 50% of votes cast are against amalga-mation, then it will not proceed – by law. John Key has also clearly stated that he will not be forcing any local government amalgamations.Rates reductions. The Local Government Commission (LGC) has been very care-ful to downplay potential cost savings and has said that “while net savings will occur these are unlikely to translate into rates reductions...” and that “an undue fo-cus on financial savings may therefore be misleading for the public.” It is interest-ing to note that the Auckland Super City is setting rates for the first time since amal-gamation and is facing large rate impact swings with some getting large reduc-tions and some large increases (up to 30 %) despite the region wide increase being around 4 %. Debt. The LGC have stated that under amalgamation TDC’s current debt will

be ring-fenced and be a targeted rate onto Tasman ratepayers. Further, one of the “benefits” identified by the LGC of amalgamation was the ability for the new council to take on more debt. The fact that only debt has been ring-fenced and depre-ciation funding has not been could result in significant inequities between ratepay-ers across a combined region.Increased governance costs but less repre-sentation. The reorganisation proposal in-cludes the creation of two advisory boards, a Rural Advisory Committee and a Maori Board who along with both the Motueka and Golden Bay Community Boards will each appoint a member to sit on (and vote on) council standing committees. This creates an extra layer of governance which will add considerably to the cost. The LGC has estimated an increase of nearly $500,000 per annum in governance costs. Further, the cost of Community Boards is at present met by a targeted rate which is paid by the Communities they represent, whereas under this proposal the costs of the two Community Boards (and Advi-sory Boards) will be met by ratepayers throughout the district.Rural Representation. The Rural Advisory Committee, made up of industry repre-sentatives, does not replace elected repre-sentation. The committee members will primarily be accountable to the mem-bers of the organisations that appoint them, and they will not have a vote on Full Council who signs off all final decisions on rating

and Council plans. At the moment 9 of 13 councillors are from the rural areas of Tasman, whereas under this proposal only 6 out of 16 councillors will be.Further information is available on line at www.lgc.govt.nz. Ann Nicholson, Gabrielle Ponsford, Sarah Churchman, Kathy Jamieson of the Off-beat are going to be performing at the Harmony and Hotcakes show in the Richmond Town Hall on Friday March 16.

College gets boys back into booksTwo Waimea College teachers have found a novel way to get boys back into reading. The program, which sees a Year 13 student help Year 9s with reading for 20 minutes four times a week, was created by teachers Ian Trice and Tim Wright to help get the boys back to up the same level as girls.Reading seems to be the solution to a wide range of academic subjects. “Boys don’t think it’s cool to ready anymore and if one of these guys goes to the li-brary and gets a book out during the year then I think it’s been a success,” says Ian. Ian says all of the students that take part are switched on kids, however, their reading skills may be below average. “We just want to make reading cool. For quite a long time now, males have lagged behind females academically, not just at Waimea, but nation-wide. Sixteen Year 13 students will have a turn at reading “cool stories”, like Bear Grylls, to the students throughout the year. The Year 9s just have to follow along, as it is read out loud to them.

Waimea College student James Vanner, 17, second from left, has been helping Year 9 students Laegh Nicoll, Jake Todd and Tyler Power, all 13, get into reading. The reading group meets for 20 minutes four times a week and was created to help boys catch the girls in academic achievement. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

At holiday times journalists ask people, usually cute little kids, what the holiday is for. Christmas is easy. “Santa” most kids reply. A few might an-swer “baby Jesus”. Easter is also easy. “Easter eggs. Easter bunny. Chocolate.” Very seldom is there anything deeper than that. What do you reckon would happen if we asked about Lent? Puzzled or blank faces is what I would expect from almost everyone. Most people have never heard of Lent. Many Christians don’t know about it either, let alone celebrate it. It’s kind of dropped off the radar. So what is Lent?Lent begins with Ash Wednesday. This year Ash Wednesday coincided with the anniversary of the big earthquake in Christchurch. Kind of appro-priate really. We mourned with Christchurch, we missed the old buildings and saw the rubble that remains, and we remembered the people who died and prayed for their families and friends. At the same time some Christians were acutely aware that it was Ash Wednesday. For centuries, on Ash Wednesday, Christians have received the mark of the cross. In an ancient rit-ual the cross is marked, with ash, on the forehead. “What on earth for?” you might be asking. In the aftermath of the earthquakes, we realise that many people who were engineers, architects,

experts in their fields did their best to erect safe buildings. But their best was not always good enough and people died as a result. (OK there may have been some negligence, but mostly it seems to me, people tried hard to do what was right.) In all of life, mostly people try to do what is right, to live good lives and care for others but our ef-forts don’t always cut it. We can’t always be the selfless and thoughtful people we want to be, even when we try really, really hard. This is where the story of Lent, and of Jesus, comes in. The ash re-minds us that we fail sometimes and that Jesus came to offer forgiveness for our failures. Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter where we remember that Jesus’ forgiveness cost him his life. But the story doesn’t end there. Whew! Lent cli-maxes in Easter Sunday; the joyful celebration of Jesus’ new life. Easter Sunday celebrates the new life available through his new life! You’ve got plenty of time to work up the courage to go to a church near you on Easter Sunday and find out all about it! If that’s too hard, get hold of a Bible and read Matthew, Mark, Luke or John’s stories. You can read those stories on line. But talking with someone is good. If you look up the phone number of any church in Richmond and Waimea they will cheerfully talk with you about Lent, Easter or more importantly, about Jesus.

Still Nelson’s Best EntertainmentSTOCK SHOCK

Karen Carey This weekend the Nelson Speedway Association will once again be hosting the Brian Stanaway Roading Stock Shock. For the last few years the Stock Shock has been one of the “must attend” meetings, not just on the Nelson calendar but also on the calendar of many of the country’s top stockcar drivers. Last year a late clash of dates meant that the number of drivers attend-ing was down on past seasons but that in no way impacted on the quality of racing. This year the entry list is sitting at around 30, ensuring some close action packed racing over the two days. The Stock Shock has a reputation for producing some of the hardest and most competitive racing in this class outside of a teams event and already the excitement is building within the Nelson Stockcar class. With a posse of 7 visitors coming from Blen-

heim, one can only assume that this will be the meeting where a few scores will be settled and a few early season paybacks meted out. Add to the entry list the return of ex superstock driver, Invercargill based Campbell McManaway, Stock Shock regular Tony Stanton from Greymouth and 3 Christchurch drivers Daniel McNally, Matt Cockburn, and Paul Anderson making their Stock Shock debut and the potential for a week-end of mayhem increases. The sole North Island representative is Kyle Heibner from Whanganui. Kyle has raced here before in his Youth Minis-tock and has been impressive since moving up to Stockcars. Last year’s winner, Tim Alexan-der is not racing this season so we are definitely looking for a new Stock Shock champion. Ralph Gillespie, a past top 3 place getter, will be a fa-vourite to move further up the podium and take out the number one spot.

On Friday night in addition to the qualifying for the Stock Shock itself the meeting also features the 2 day Minis-tock Mania championship for Youth Ministocks. This is a highly contested event for the youth drivers and one that is run over a qualifying and finals points system. While the class is es-sentially designed as a training class rather than a competitive class this format teaches them the importance of finishing races, gaining places,

keeping track of points etc, a skill they will need when they move on to other classes. The support classes on Friday night include Midgets, Streetstocks, Production Saloons and Sidecars. On Saturday night both the Brian Stanaway Roading Stock Shock, and the Ministock Mania will be decided as well as the Midget Club Champi-onships which run the final of their 3 round event. The current points leader is Nick Marquet. The final pro-

motion of the weekend is the Brett Lusty Memo-rial for sidecars and with the top pairings straight back from contesting the New Zealand Champi-onships at Rosebank Domain in Auckland expect the pace to be just that little bit hotter than usual. The Three Quarter Midgets round out Saturday’s programme.Racing both nights starts at 7pm with gates open-ing at 6pm. However, for those wanting a close up look at the cars, the opportunity to meet some of your favourite drivers and a chance to experi-ence what goes on behind the scenes prior to rac-ing, the public gate at the pit entry is open from 3pm. Entry both nights remains at $15 per adult, $7 members, pensioners and children 5-15 years. Children under 5 are free and a family pass for 2 adults and up to 3 children is only $30.

BOP hooker takes up dual role at WanderersYou’d be forgiven for think-ing blue and gold were Dan-iel Perrin’s favourite colours. The Bay of Plenty hooker has joined Taylor’s Con-tracting Wanderers for the upcoming club rugby sea-son as a player/coach and will look at using his recent Super 15 experience to help nurture the young talent in Brightwater.Wanderers will field a team in division one for the first time since 2006 thanks to a push from their two major sponsors Taylor’s Contract-ing and Golden Wings. The move into the coaching ranks is a natural transition for the 29 year-old Stoke resident, who has played off the bench for the Crusad-ers 12 times and was a part of the Chiefs 2011 Super 15 squad. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to get into af-ter playing footy and when Wanderers first touched base with me and suggested they were after a coach as well, it was something I had to weigh up,” says Daniel. “I wasn’t making Super [Rug-by] footy so I had to look at the next path, which is the coaching one.”Johnny Bloxham will take the backs while Daniel will be in charge of the forwards. But once it comes game day “it’s what Johnny says goes.”Daniel still has plenty of drive and ambition to play at the highest level possible, after his early taste with the Crusaders. Daniel recently signed another one-year contract with the Bay of Plenty Steamers and hopes another successful ITM Cup campaign can put him back on the radar for Su-per 15 franchises. But Nelson remains a key part of his future and now that he has bought into the Post Haste cou-rier company, owns a house and is due to marry fiancee Nikki Adams in January, he hopes 2013 will be the year he can add to his 30-odd Tas-man Makos caps. “Wanderers have a three-year plan which I’m involved in as well so I hope to return to help them out next year and get a gig with Tasman.”He has also been helping some of the younger players in the city and last year spent time men-toring the Nayland College first XV. The week-

end after his visit they went on to record their first ever Press Cup victory, defeating Waimea College. “They had been getting a towelling by 80-90 points and to watch them get up and see how happy they were in that game was pretty awe-some.”That time with Nayland is what spurred him onto coaching. Wanderers have been together training for the past two months and already Daniel has been impressed with the players’ work ethic. “There’s a lot of good young guys out there at the moment that are going to get a crack at senior footy and my job will be to help them out, critique them, provide them with a chance to up skill and take that next step.”Daniel is also looking at obtaining IRB coaching certificates. If all goes well, there could be plenty of success to come from the blue and golds in 2012.

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

with

The word must have got out last weekend that the snapper are still off Rabbit Island. When we arrived there were 3 boats fishing in about 20 feet of water at the eastern end of the island and when we left there were 18 boats fishing inside a square kilometre radius. We were fortunate enough to catch 10 fish around the 30cm mark over a period of a few hours. The kayaking fraternity who have been out several times this past week have also had no trouble catching these fish. A tip for catching these smaller fish is to make sure that you use flash-er rigs with recurved hooks about 3/0 in size and use either small cubed pilchards or squid as bait. By using the recurved hooks the fish will generally hook themselves, leaving the easy job of winding them to the surface.Kenepuru has not fished as well this season but from now on should startto get better. The key to successful fishing in this area is patience. Earlymorning or evening on an incoming tide with a solid berley trail will in-crease your chances. Usually it takes about 2 hours from low tide for thecurrent to really start to push and disperse the berley before the snap-per will come on the bite. Straylin-ing is the best way with at least one rod cast far back into the berley trail for that big shy snapper.

The spat farms and boulder bank are still producing excellent kingfish.A point that we would like to touch on, is that there are now more free divers in both of these areas. Most of these divers are very responsible and have the appropriate safety measures in place, the most important being a brightly coloured orange buoy with a dive flag attached to themselves

and a diving buddy on the surface. These sim-ple measures ensure that boaties especially can see that there is a diver in the water and also should a diver experience difficul-ties his buddy can offer as-sistance.Unfortunately not all di-vers are taking these pre-cautions so boaties in these areas should remain vigilant at all times. Some things to lookoutfor are a buoy with div-

ing flag attached, snorkel above the water, flippers kicking on the sur-face and any splashing of water. Also don’t necessarily assume that two buoys on the surface are that of a set net or setline and drive through them. Give them a wide berth or ap-proach them slowly and cautiously, because if there are divers surfacing they won’t necessarily appear where the floats are. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club has experienced free divers in its ranks and would more than welcome any new members to benefit from their experience and knowledge.

For most of the Richmond Rabbits, preseason training has included getting their heads around a new sport, but it will be the nine-a-side form of the game that Richmond’s newest rugby league franchise makes their debut in.The Richmond Rabbits are now a per-manent fixture in the Tasman Rugby League calendar and despite naming Ngawhatu as their home ground, the foundations are purely Richmond.Unable to secure Ben Cooper Park, the Rabbits will share the “Snake Pit” with the Stoke Cobras. They had previously weighed up whether to play all their home games at away venues. But with the TRL season just weeks away, the side is firmly focussed on the Nelson Nines Rugby League tourna-ment held at Trafalgar Park this Satur-day. “We’re realistic about where we are going to be. But at the same time we’re setting high goals and we aim to be competitive,” says Deon Charles. The Richmond Rabbits has been made up of league players from other clubs, former rugby union players and some guys who are trying out for the first time. “Everyone has gelled together quite well. We all get on and we’re all enjoying it.”The Nines kicks off at 10am.

The Nelson Veterans Tournament took place over the weekend at the Hope Tennis Club with 110 entries, an increase on entries over the past few years.A social grade was introduced which proved very popular with many players entering their first Veterans Tournament. There were nine husband and wife combinations competing over the weekend and play-ers came from West Coast, Marlborough and Canterbury to

take part in the 44th Annual Tour-nament. The youngest player was Julian Main of Canterbury, the minimum age required being 35 years and the oldest competitor was Nelson’s 85 year-old Joyce Jones competing in the social doubles. The standard of tennis was out-standing with some tough experi-enced competitors.

On April 6, 20 Waimea College students will depart on a three week trip of a lifetime. As part of their Classical Studies and Histo-ry classes they will visit England, France and Italy with a stop in Dubai on the way home. Students will be able to visit in real life the places they study in textbooks, see with their own eyes the very pieces of art they consider, and walk in the foot-steps of the characters they read about in Classical Studies and History. As well as directly help-ing the students with their stud-ies, the trip will also expand their world-view and help encourage them to become citizens with a wider perspective on life, other peoples and places, giving them greater insight in their own day-to-day lives. From tasting frog legs in Paris, to seeing beggars in the streets of Rome, to hear-ing the call to prayer in Dubai, students will become intimately aware of the world outside their own. Beginning in London, the tour includes Hampton Court, Shake-speare’s Globe, the Tower of Lon-

don, the London Eye, Bucking-ham Palace, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Winsor Castle. After London, the tour takes a relaxing ferry from Dover to Normandy and onto Versailles where the students will stay in a châteaux once occupied by Nazi forces. From there it is on to Paris and the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral and then the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa. After some time out at Disney Land the tour departs for Southern France via Avignon and onto Nimes, Cannes and Monaco then Florence. Sights to visit in Florence and Northern Italy include Michel-angelo’s David and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, then onto Rome and the Arch of Constantine, Colosseum, Ara Pacis, Trajan’s Column, Pantheon, catacombs and the Capitoline Museum to see the famous she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. Just when it seemed about as hectic as it could be, the tour visits the Vatican in-cluding the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. From there it is onto Naples and Sorrento via Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli.

After some pizza in Naples and a tour of the time capsule that is Pompeii, the students will have some rest and relaxation time in sleepy Sorrento. After a high speed train back to Rome and a flight to Dubai there is more time to recuperate before head-ing home. A gentle visit up the world’s tallest building (around

two and a half times taller than the Sky Tower in Auckland), a desert safari and a spot of belly dancing await the tour before it’s departure back to New Zealand. After a sleep in, no doubt the students will be straight onto Facebook to upload all their photos and be planning their next overseas adventure. Then

when they sit down for their NCEA exams at the end of the year and questions about some-thing they have seen with their own eyes pops up, their answers will take on a whole different perspective. The students grate-fully acknowledge the assistance of their sponsors to help make this trip possible.

Waimea College Classical Studies and History students are from front left, Kelsi Hylkema, Sophie Strawbridge, Renee Downing, Lauren Lines, Bianca Fraser, Alice McCullough, Natasha Dunn, Karin McKenzie, Bailey Adamson and Emma Blake. Back row: James Auld, Monique Fisher, Jessie Johnston, Kirsten Ragan, Lauren Hill, Jayden Stringer, Dillon Boote and Kristeen Jensen. Absent: Morgan Collis-Fisher & Azure Paenga.
