XVI/2008/2/Studie 176 SUMMARY Seven Mithraic Grades: Narratives of the Scholars’ Knowledge: An Initiatory or Priestly Hierarchy? The Potential of Narrative and Critical Theory in the Study of Religions This text is a contribution to critical reflections on the ways how knowledge is produced Ale‰ Chalupa* in the academic study of religions and on the epistemological and social consequences of this knowledge production. My argument rests on the assumption that the narrative approach can positively contribute to critical theorizing about analytical narratives constructed by scholars of religions. I deal with the particular connection between critical theory and nar-Mithraism was one of many religious cults which proliferated in the so-rative analysis as applied to these analytical narratives. The contemporary scholarly consensus is, however, norms as an inevitable consequence of articulating analytical narratives. ThePotentialofNarrativeandCriticalTheoryintheStudyofReligionsThistextisacontributiontocriticalreflectionsonthewayshowknowledgeisproducedAle‰Chalupa*

intheacademicstudyofreligionsandontheepistemologicalandsocialconsequencesofthisknowledgeproduction.Myargumentrestsontheassumptionthatthenarrativeapproachcanpositivelycontributetocriticaltheorizingaboutanalyticalnarrativesconstructedbyscholarsofreligions.Idealwiththeparticularconnectionbetweencriticaltheoryandnar-Mithraismwasoneofmanyreligiouscultswhichproliferatedintheso-rativeanalysisasappliedtotheseanalyticalnarratives.Thecriticalpotentialofthenarrati-cietyoftheRomanEmpire.Theevidenceofitsexistencebeginstoappearveapproachshouldnotbesearchedforinitsfrequentlypresumedabilitytodiscoveramo-retruthfulversionofrealitybehindthenarrativeconstructions,butintheinquiryabout(1)inourhistoricalsources,ratherabruptly,inthelastquarterofthe1stcen-thespecificworldviewsinwhichscholarlynarrativesareembeddedand(2)theconsequen-turyCE.1TheoriginsofMithraismarestilldebated:theancientscalleditcesnarrativeshaveforsociallife.OnthisbasisandviadiscussingJonathanZ.Smith’stextMysteriesofMithras,or,becauseofitssupposedPersianorigins,Myste-onPeoplesTempleIre-interprettheHorkheimerianideaoftheinseparabilityoffactsandriesofthePersians.Thecontemporaryscholarlyconsensusis,however,normsasaninevitableconsequenceofarticulatinganalyticalnarratives.Iarguethatthesenarrativesserveasamodelforsociallifeandthushaveconsequencesforsociallifebecau-veryclosetotheopinionthatMithraisminitsWesternform,regardlessofseoftheirmediatingrolewhichcanbegraspedinthree,closelyinterwovendimensions:inpossiblepresenceofsomeauthenticPersianmotifs,isaproductofthemediatingaconceptualbaseforinterpretingtheworld,inmediatingaguidelineforarticu-Graeco-Romanworldandprobablyhadevolved(orhadbeencreated)latingmoraljudgmentsabouttheworld,inmediatingamodelforsocialaction.

Clauss’sargumentthattherareattestationsofMithraicgradesintheepi-AlsothemeaningoftheattestedtermgradusisinperfectaccordwithgraphicalevidencemustindicatethattheyarepriestlyofficesisseriouslythesuccessivenatureofMithraicgrades.Themostpersuasiveargumentflawedinoneimportantaspect:hedoesnottakeintoaccountsufficientlyforthefinalacceptanceoftheverticallyintegratedconceptofMithraicproblemsconnectedwithkeepingrecordsofaflexiblesystemofgradesongradesis,however,theircloseconnectionwiththeplanetsandplanetaryinscriptionsmeanttobepermanent.Claussstudiedalmostexclusivelyde-gods.InthePtolemaicmodelofthecosmostheuniversecanbeseenasadicationsmadeinstoneor(lessoften)inmetal.Butinthissystemofper-hollowspherewiththeEarthinitscenter.Theuniverseisseparatedintomanentcommemorationandrecording,namesandsocialstatusofadedi-twomainregions,sublunarandsuperlunar.Thesuperlunarregionstret-canthadadifferentrelevancethanhiscurrentpositioninaninitiatorychesfromtheMoonupwardandcanbefurtherdividedintoeightspheres:hierarchythatwasboundtochangeinthefuture.Onceaninscriptionwassevenofthemconsistofplanets,fromtheMoonclosesttotheEarthuptofinalized,theexecutionofanysubsequentchangesbecame,duetothepro-thefarthestSaturn.Theeighthandhighestsphereisthesphereofthefixedpertiesofmediausuallyused,extremelyproblematic.Therelevanceofstars.ItseemsthatMithraismwas,atleastinitssoteriologicalcomponent,Clauss’sobservationthatwedonothaveanyconclusiveepigraphicevi-especiallypreoccupiedwiththedestinyofthehumansoulfromthemodenceofasinglemoment,whentheholderofonegradeappearsisalsoat-mentitdescendedfromthesphereofthefixedstarsintophysicalexisten-testedastheholderofadifferentone,72canthusbesuccessfullyquestio-ceandeventuallyreturnedbackafterthedeathanddissolutionofitsmor-ned.Thatthesituationcouldlookverydifferentlywhensomeotherkindtalbody.Thisdescentofhumansoulstotheearthandtheirascentbackofmediumwasusedcanbeseenfromtheprovisionalarchaeologicalre-couldbeonlyundertaken(accordingtocontemporaneousviews)throughportoftheexcavationsinDuraEuroposmithraeum,whereastaggeringtheplanetaryspheresthatseparatedtheeighthandhighestspherefromtheamountofgraffiti,probablycommemoratinginitiationsintovariousgra-Earth.ItisthereforeplausibleenoughtoclaimthatwhenMithraistsindi-des,wasdiscovered.73Unfortunately,wecanonlysaythatthismoremun-viduallywentthroughthehierarchicalsequenceofgradestiedupwithpla-daneaspectofthecommemorationoftheseimportanteventsinthelivesnetsandtheirtutelarydivinities,theyrealizedandreenactedthedestinyofofinitiateshadonlylittlechancetobepreservedinthematerialscharac-humansoulsgenerally.ThisopinionseemstobeconfirmedbyPorphyry’steristicoftheDanubianorRhineanprovinces.
