For nearly a century, remanufacturing has been a reliable method of extending the life of hardworking equipment. That’s especially true now because as product quality continues to improve, remanufacturing becomes an even better option. Unfortunately, there are plenty of myths surrounding the reman industry, process and product. Choosing reman over new can save you time and money and be environmentally friendly. Here are seven truths behind the myths of truck remanufacturing.

Page 3: 7 myths - Randall-Reilly · Unfortunately, there are plenty of myths surrounding the reman industry, process and product. Choosing reman over new can save you time and money and be

MYTH: Remanufacturing is limited in scope.TRUTH: Vehicle Reman can provide upfit, accessories, and a wide range of additional services for clients at the time of the reman service. There are virtually no limits. Vehicle Reman removes not only the body from the chassis, but every major system and subsystem from the vehicle. THE REMAN REWARD: When choosing reman over new, clients avoid retiring fleet vehicles that still retain value. By using the remanufacturing process to bring the vehicle to like-new condition, Vehicle Reman can upfit and accessorize the vehicle to the client’s specifications.

MYTH: Since the remanufacturing process only replaces the worn parts, it’s still a used vehicle; new is better.

TRUTH: The remanufacturing process entails rebuilding the part to the specifications of the original manufactured product.

THE REMAN REWARD: The performance and ride quality improvement is amazing. Today’s vehicles are high quality and make good candidates for remanufacturing. All engineering changes made after new production are incorporated in remanufactured motors and components.

MYTH: The remanufacturing process is too expensive.

TRUTH: Vehicle Reman’s process saves customers up to 50 percent compared to new replacement cost. In fact, each vehicle is engineered-to-order so the customer can pick and choose their options depending on their budget. THE REMAN REWARD: You own the budget. You have line item veto power on every vehicle quote

MYTH: Remans don’t offer tax benefits. TRUTH: There are three tax treatments: (1) add the reman service to the existing cost basis and continue the existing depreciation, (2) sell your core to Vehicle Reman and buy back the reman vehicle to create a new depreciation schedule or (3) expense the reman service as you would any vehicle repair cost. THE REMAN REWARD: Instead of depreciating a vehicle once, when you choose to remanufacture a vehicle, you have several options. If you choose to sell the core to Vehicle Reman, for example, subsequent vehicles create an even more creative option. Count the core as a trade-in to avoid sales tax in favor of vehicle tax, which is often less.

MYTH: The reman process is lengthy and arduous. TRUTH: When dealing with a company with a responsive supply chain, you’re using a company with ready-access to fleet parts. Using an engineered-to-order process to execute the customer’s custom scope of work minimizes the labor component. THE REMAN REWARD: Vehicle Reman has consolidated all vehicle repairs so that they are completed in one place at one time. A proven assembly line approach reduces order turnaround to just weeks – or even days. From its 60,000-square-foot facility, Vehicle Reman has plenty of resources in place to finish a truck in a short amount of time.

MYTH: The process is complicated and inconvenient compared with purchasing a new vehicle.

TRUTH: In fact, Vehicle Reman streamlines the process by eliminating middlemen such as dealers and distributors, making the process as simple as possible. Customers enjoy the convenience of door-to-door product pick-up and delivery. THE REMAN REWARD: Dealing directly with the company ensures a seamless process in which the client not only receives a spec’d to order vehicle quickly, the delivery procedure is convenient and painless for the fleet owner-operator.

MYTH: Remanufacturing isn’t considered green. TRUTH: By eliminating the need to mine or process raw material, engaging in the remanufacturing process is significantly more environmentally friendly than purchasing new. Even the eventual recycling of the core is delayed substantially, and vehicle fluids are recycled. THE REMAN REWARD: Using the remanufacturing process allows clients to demonstrate their commitment to the environment. In some instances, clients may be able to claim tax or emissions credits

CONCLUSIONOnce the myths associated with remanufacturing vehicles are dispelled, the rewards are hard to ignore. The fleet owner who saves half the cost of a new vehicle, runs it for twice as long and enjoys the peace of mind of a three-year, 75,000-mile powertrain warranty is ahead of the game before he even begins to measure tax breaks, emissions credits and depreciation costs. It’s why you should take a second look at any vehicle you think you might be ready to scrap.
