The Importance of Pretesting

Many in the teaching profession teach a lesson with the end in mind. In other words, not teaching the test, but teaching what they want to test before creating their actual lesson content. If used correctly it can be a very effective tool for teachers.

Pretests are administered before a lesson :

• to determine if what is being covered has already been mastered by some or all of the class.

• to determine if learning, when compared to post-tests, has occurred.

• to give students a preview of what will be required of them, this helps students stay focused on learning what they need to know.
