Advent A Light in the Darkness

The word advent means "coming." The Advent Season, which begins on the Sunday nearest November 30 (four Sundays before Christmas Day) is a time of spiritual preparation and reflection in anticipation of Christmas, the celebration of Christ's birth. The beauty and wisdom of Advent is the opportunity we have to ponder the real meaning of Christmas, by using symbols and meditating on passages of Scripture dealing with His coming. Advent reminds us not only of Christ's coming to earth in human form to die for the sins of the world, but also that He will come again in glory at the last trumpet. As in the parable of the virgins with their oil lamps, we are called to prepare ourselves to be ready for Him when He comes. Purple or dark blue are the traditional colors for Advent. They are colors of royalty, for we await a King. The circular shape of the Advent wreath symbolizes God's never-ending love for us. The wreath is made with evergreens, representing everlasting life, the gift of God to us in Christ. Four candles are set in the wreath, one for each Sunday of the season. The lighting of an additional candle each week in Advent marks the growing anticipation for the Light who came into the world at Jesus' birth. At the center of the wreath is a white Christ candle, which is lit on Christmas Eve. We encourage you to observe this quiet season of preparation at home in your personal or family devotions.

Giving together

A note from the Leadership Board (Love Offering for Staff)

At Calvary we have a tradition of taking a love offering to show our love and appreciation to our pastors and support staff. We continue this tradition, encouraging you to take part in this practical way to honor our staff. Love gift envelopes are in your church mailbox. If you don't have a church mailbox, you may pick up an envelope at the Welcome Center or in wall racks by the some of the exit doors. You may drop this envelope into the offering plate or the mail slot in the office through the end of year. Alternatively, you can use the text-to-give option, specifying "cefccare" instead of "cefc." —The Leadership Board

Wendell Amstutz, Sammy Chesney, John Fitz, David Heins, Darrel Moe, Doris Mulholland, Jerry Nau, Karen Padgett, Jordan Padgett, Tim Robeck, Eemou See, and Ray Wiens.

*Congregational Carol COME, THOU LONG-EXPECTED JESUS R. H. Pritchard

Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, Dear Desire of ev'ry nation, joy of ev'ry longing heart.

Come to earth to taste our sadness, he whose glories knew no end; By his life he brings us gladness, our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend. Leaving riches without number, born within a cattle stall; This the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all.

Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, Born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; By thine all-sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne.

Christ by highest heav'n adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of the Virgin's womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; Hail th'incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Ris'n with healing in His wings. *Congregational Carol SING WE THE SONG OF EMMANUEL R. H. Pritchard

Sing we the song of Emmanuel; This the Christ who was long foretold. Lo in the shadows of Bethlehem, Promise of dawn now our eyes behold.

God Most High in a manger laid; Lift your voices and now proclaim: Great and glorious, Love has come to us; Join now with the hosts of heaven.

Come we to welcome Emmanuel; King who came with no crown or throne. Helpless He lay, the Invincible, Maker of Mary, now Mary’s son.

O what wisdom to save us all, Shepherds, sages, before Him fall. Grace and majesty, what humility; Come on bended knee, adore Him.

Go spread the news of Emmanuel; Joy and peace for the weary heart. Lift up your heads, for your King has come; Sing, for the Light overwhelms the dark.

Glory shining for all to see, Hope alive, let the gospel ring. God has made a way, He will have the praise; Tell the world His name is Jesus.

Scripture: Luke 2:1-14

To reveal the kingdom coming, And to reconcile the lost, To redeem the whole creation, You did not despise the cross.

For even in Your suffering, You saw to the other side. Knowing this was our salvation, Jesus, for our sake You died.

*Praise the Father, praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, three in one. God of Glory, Majesty. Praise forever to the King of Kings.

And the morning that You rose, All of heaven held its breath Till that stone was moved for good, For the Lamb had conquered death.

And the dead rose from their tombs, And the angels stood in awe, For the souls of all who'd come To the Father are restored.

And the Church of Christ was born, Then the Spirit lit the flame. Now this Gospel truth of old Shall not kneel, shall not faint.

By His blood and in His Name, In His freedom I am free, For the love of Jesus Christ Who has resurrected me.

Praise the Father, praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, three in one. God of Glory, Majesty. Praise forever to the King of Kings.

Praise the Father, praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, three in one. God of Glory, Majesty. Praise forever to the King of Kings.

Praise forever to the King of Kings.

Poem: “First Coming” Madeleine L’Engle

King of Kings arr. D. Galbraith

Jen Grandouiller, soprano

In the darkness we were waiting, Without hope, without light, Till from heaven You came running; There was mercy in Your eyes.

To fulfil the law and prophets To a virgin came the Word. From a throne of endless glory, To a cradle in the dirt.

Praise the Father, praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, three in one. God of Glory, Majesty. Praise forever to the King of Kings.

He did not wait till the world was ready, till men and nations were at peace He came when the Heavens were unsteady and prisoners cried out for release.

He did not wait for the perfect time. He came when the need was deep and great. He dined with sinners in all their grime, turned water into wine. He did not wait

till hearts were pure. In joy he came to a tarnished world of sin and doubt. To a world like ours, of anguished shame He came, and his Light would not go out.

He came to a world which did not mesh, to heal its tangles, shield its scorn. In the mystery of the Word made Flesh the Maker of the stars was born.

We cannot wait till the world is sane to raise our songs with joyful voice, for to share our grief, to touch our pain, He came with Love: Rejoice! Rejoice!

Congregational Carol MIDNIGHT CLEAR (Love Song) arr. D. Galbraith and J. Haschek

Chris Stephenson, baritone

Solo: It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men from heaven’s all-gracious King.” The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

ALL: Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats o’er all the weary world. And man at war with man hears not the love song which they bring. O hush the noise and cease the strife and hear the angels sing.

Glory to God in the highest, glory to God evermore. Good news, great joy for all. Melody breaks through the silence, Christ the Savior is born. Jesus, the love song of God.

Solo: You’re the love song. You so loved the world, You’re the love song.

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold.

Angels From the Realms of Glory arr. D. Forrest

Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth. Ye who sang creation's story, now proclaim Messiah's birth.

Come and worship, come and worship, Worship Christ the newborn King!

Shepherds in the field abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing, yonder shines the infant light.

Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar. Seek the great Desire of nations, ye have seen His natal star.

All creation join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son. Evermore your voices raising to the eternal Three in One!

In the Bleak Midwinter arr. J. Rea

Karmen Saski, alto

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heav'n cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heav'n and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed__ For the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Gloria, Gloria! Now my eyes have seen; Soli Deo Gloria! He salvation brings. As the Lord has promised, I may go in peace.

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. Orig. Words by Christina Rossetti. Scripture: Luke 4:16-21

O Children, Come! arr. P. Campbell

Grace DeWitz, solo

Hear the cry from Bethlehem: ‘O children, come!’ Son of God now born to men: ‘O children, come!’ Bring your troubles, bring your fears; bring the needs that draw you near. Find the hope of all the years: ‘O children, come! O children, come!’

* Peace on earth, goodwill to men: ‘O children, come!’

Righteous rule that will not end: ‘O children, come!’ Lay down all your bitterness; turn from sin’s toil and distress.

Find His grace and perfect rest: ‘O children, come! O children, come!’

Where the Father’s grace has walked: ‘O children, come!’ Where you see the hurt and lost: ‘O children, come!’ Show the mercy shown to you; gifts of kindness to renew. Love from hearts sincere and true. ‘O children, come!’

Scripture: Matthew 9:9-13

The Table arr. G. Wall Jill and Grace Pearson, vocal duet

No palace worthy of our King, Too many walls to keep Him in. But a mansion worthy of this Son Was a stable that said, “Welcome.”

A journey on a starry night, The wisest ones followed the light; They gathered 'round the Holy One, Who was born to love and lead us home.

Hark! The herald angels sing; Hear the sound and enter in. There's a place reserved, just come, 'Cause Jesus eats with ev'ryone.

A child who is the King of Kings, Who made a way of grace for sin. Our humble Savior gave it all, So we'd be seated with the Lord.

Hark! The herald angels sing; Hear the sound and enter in. There's a place reserved, just come, 'Cause Jesus eats with ev'ryone. Hear the whisper of His heart, The goodness of our saving God. It doesn't matter what we've done, 'Cause Jesus eats with ev'ryone.

We gather at the table, the table of the Lord. Come one, come all, come as you are. We gather at the table, the table of the Lord. Just seek and you will find Him; come as you are. Words and music by Darlene Zschech. © 2018 Integrity Worship Music. CCLI#133392.

Meditation

When the Song of the Angels Is Stilled E. Alexander

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the heavens is gone, When the kings and the princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart.
