EATINGOUT Café Koha
Nestled between the stage doors of the
Wyndham and Noel Coward theatres lies
Café Koha. Here you can sample hospitality with that
little bit extra! In addition to the spirited and elegant
dining room, which itself allows for al fresco and
authentic dining, Koha’s downstairs bar hosts, among
other events, jazz and poetry nights, corporate
events and private birthday parties.
Koha is a family-run business, its glory accredited to
two decades of providing great hospitality and a
wholesome menu. Koha’s dishes are all homemade
using only the finest local and seasonal ingredients
and their in-house baker produces fresh homemade
breads and desserts every day. Koha has become
the favourite haunt of some of London’s most
interesting artists, journalists, sportsmen, politicians
and professionals, who enjoy lunch for business or
pleasure in its welcoming, intimate and stylish setting.
The menu showcases modern classic cuisine and a
superb selection of wines. Specialities like Grilled
Saudi Prawns are favourites at Koha and Pan-fried
Monk Fish is the star of the show. Koha is a hidden
jewel buried in London’s Theatreland. One visit and

Masala Zone (Marshall Street Soho and Floral StreetCovent Garden WC2)
Masala Zone Marshall Street, located behind bustlingCarnaby Street offers a welcome retreat along withan Indian emphasis on healthy living, fresh food andgreat taste sensations.
We were shown to our table by host Abhinav, andwere quickly refreshed by Nimboo Pani – MasalaZone’s homemade lemonade made from lemon, limes, salt and sugar.
We ordered the tasty grazing platter starter, a selection of Bhel – a crunchy salad with chutney and peanuts, Dahi Puri - puffed hollow biscuits filled with chick pea mash with yoghurt and chutney,Aloo Tikki Chaat - spiced mash cake with yoghurtand chutney and Gol Guppa - lentil & tamarindstuffed whole wheat biscuits, a taste sensation not to be missed.
Next, refreshment. Lassi Yoghurt drink, the perfectmouth cooler, and apple and mint juice, also most refreshing.
For our main course we chose Grand Thali - equal to a two course meal comprising a canapé, Papadum& chutney, a choice of curry – both lamb and sweetchicken very tender, also available vegetable andprawn, two vegetables (one green and one root),Dahl (lentil), Raita (yoghurt), salad, freshly-madewhole wheat Chapati (Indian bread) & rice.
Dessert. Wow. Homemade Kulfis, a mixture ofblended Indian ice cream – caramel, mango and pistachio alongside traditional Gulab Jamun (frieddough balls with syrup). Absolutely outstanding.

Central Life welcomes fashion consultant, stylist
and retailer Max Karie to comment on the world of
ladies fashion. Among Max’s long list credits he has
notably run some of Soho’s most iconic stores
including Shop at Maison Bertaux Café.
This winter Max’s Fashion tip is for all things British.
One such item is the Billingham Bag - the Rolls
Royce of camera bags – now in collaboration with
the very British lifestyle and home wares company
Pedlars. This versatile bag is ideal for both men and
women and is available for the first time as a
purpose fit bag, lined and labelled as part of the
ongoing alliance with Pedlars.
Normally the preserve of camera buffs, this cool
bag comes in two sizes. The traditional small Hadley,
ideal as a unisex run-around shoulder bag, and the
larger Pro, suitable for a MacBook. Both are fully
lined in the exclusive Pedlars Red Colourway,
striking against either the black canvas and leather
construction or a khaki/tan version.

MEN’SFASHIONThe McQueen look is back!
by Nick Tentis
Autumn / Winter 2009
Our menswear style advisor Nick Tentis will guide us
chaps through this seasons what’s-hot-and-what’s-
not’ must haves – we can’t allow those girls to have
all the fun!
With many years experience in high end fashion
design Nick Tentis’ have had the good fortune to
dress celebrities and sports stars alike, many of
whom are prepared to travel distances in order
to meet with them and show off the Tentis style
worldwide.
Autumn/Winter is all about separates and mixing it
up; short blazers with tapered trousers and Mod
loafers, cardigans with polo shirts, and tons of colour
and texture.
Men are wearing either formal wear, e.g. suits and
ties, or casual wear - jeans and knitwear. Instead, go
for tailored cotton trousers with a sports jacket or a
brightly coloured cardigan over a shirt with knitted
tie and loafers or desert boots.
Suit looks
Suiting and formal wear trends are not fleeting and
can spread over several seasons. This Winter I would
recommend grey flannel, sharp small stripes and dark
mohair ; all classics that are right for now and will still
work throughout next year.
The Three Piece
Now, if you want to look the part, go for the look
Steve McQueen perfected in the film The Thomas
Crown Affair (not Mr Brosnan). If you want to wear
a three-piece suit with style - rent the movie and
copy McQueen’s style – it works! The trend for
single and double button suits is still strong. A single
button can still be a contemporary fashionable look
as well as classic Savile Row. Go for Flannel, Prince
of Wales checks and classic dark grey shark skin.
Three Button. Oh yes, it’s back, total Mod. The
three-button is making a come back and, in our
opinion, one that is long overdue - try Mohair,
Dogtooth or small pinstripes.
Nick Tentis are opening their flagship store at
37 Savile Row in February 2010, offering a complete
menswear lifestyle range, tailoring, outerwear,
knitwear, watches and more.
The shop will include a cocktail and espresso bar on
its ground floor and a cigar lounge on the lower
ground floor.

LEGALADVICE Will Changes – how it’ll effect you
With more than 60% of the population not having
made a will, it is left to the state to decide who inherits
their assets when they die. This is called intestacy.
If a married man dies, survived by his wife and
children (who may be from a previous relationship),
his wife receives the first £250,000 of his assets and
the right to the income from half of what is
remaining, this half ultimately passing to his children.
The other half, namely 25% of his assets, passes to
his children immediately. In times of poor property
prices, this may result in a widow having to sue her
dead husband’s children for a considerable share of
their inheritance.
This month The Law Commission is launching a
Consultation Paper reviewing the law. A number of
wide-ranging proposals are to be addressed including
the suggestion that a widow should inherit 100% of
her husband’s assets, to the total exclusion of his
children. The proposals will be wide-ranging and the
public are asked to comment directly to the Law
Commission, but there is no substitute for consulting
a solicitor and making a will.

FOCUS ON SOHOSam Arkus and the
Little Shop that Rocked
The little shop that rocked, that rolled with thepunches for close to seventy years, has finally takenits leave.
Sam Arkus’ long tradition began in 1947 when patriarch Jack Arkus, an itinerant tailor from the EastEnd, passed the reins to son Sam, who upon signing a lease at 60 Berwick Street, charged son Peter withmanaging until his retirement early this year.
Traditions may occasionally be lost along the way,and it seems that the days of the tailor-lined streetsof Soho are to fade into history.
Sam moved to the ground floor shop in BerwickStreet boasting the then, ultra modern, deep displaywindows and dashing red scripted signage. WithWorld War II finally ceasing, soldiers were returninghome jettisoning their uniforms and in need of newclothes to begin the new life the war had forcedthem to make.
Sam Arkus offered ready-made clothing with anarray of suits, trousers and jackets. The family tradition of tailoring served Sam well as he oversawhis alteration team. So well in fact that customersbegan requesting bespoke suits, as memories of warfaded and the new battles of the business worldbegan occupying their minds.
Yet it was not only businessmen who sought outSam Arkus. The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, PeterWynear, and The Who all became devoted customers as lapels narrowed and flared. Trousershugged the ankles before trends billowed them intobell-bottoms. Sam Arkus served them all. Young Peter still only in his teens willingly left schoolto follow his father into this glamorous world. Worldchampion fighters George Cottle and Dave Charnleyregaled the young Peter with their stories. Bill Nighy,The King Singers and countless others had their suitstailored at Sam’s. Peter was lucky enough to be in-vited to their performances, whether in a ring, onstage or in the local clubs. In 1967 Sam, the biggestfan of this good life, passed away leaving Peter theshop. With a young family and a growing trade Peterbecame the tailor of choice for MP’s, diplomats andminor royals, continuing the showbiz tradition set by Sam.
This popularity took Peter to Africa, the US and Europe in order to serve his clients who preferredhome visits rather than traveling to London. His relationship with many of these clients grew closeand to this day he maintains warm friendships withseveral of them.
Fashions and style are constantly evolving. TheNoughties found men’s fashion designers workingmore and more with former bespoke-suit customerswho had become more label conscious and were attracted to the cachet of internationally recognisednames.
Unfortunately, a downturn in the economy in recent years has reduced the number of men willingto splash out on bespoke tailoring. But the greatestdownfall in the industry has been the ageing population of trouser makers, coat makers, lapel specialists, buttonhole women, and pressers. Peterfound it increasingly difficult to maintain the quality of work that his clients had come to expect. Whenhis master alternations man,
Agnello Buonocore, announced his retirement after35 years with the Arkus family and returned to hisbeloved Italy in 2007, Peter knew it was time for himto move on, too. And so he did. Although still servinga select group of clients when he visits London, Peternow divides his time between North and SouthAmerica returning to London to see his family andgrowing brood of grandchildren. The deep displaywindows are still there, but the flamboyant sign hasgone and the Arkus tradition of men’s tailoring hassadly gone with it.

LOCALNEWSTottenham Court Road
meets Crossrail – 2010You may be aware already that long awaited worksrejuvenating Tottenham Court Road Tube Station and the new interchange with Crossrail are well underway. Additional improvements will include aticket hall nearly six times the size of the existingone, step-free access from street to platform, newescalators to the Northern Line and finally a newlandmark Plaza in front of Centre Point. All work is due to be completed by 2017.
The Crossrail Terminal, in particular, is an excitingprospect for the area, principally for the retailers at the eastern end of Oxford Street. Already, the addition of a Crossrail Terminal is attracting millions of pounds in investment as its imminent arrival approaches.
Local homeowners in the surrounding area will alsobenefit. The new link will open further the fantastic
reach the West End provides, withnew, high-capacity trains – twenty-fourper hour - running through centralLondon, directly linking Heathrow and Maidenhead to the West, and Brentwood and Canary Wharf to the East.

Hairdresser Nic Davis has worked for over 20 years
in Mayfair, Covent Garden and Fitzrovia. “Haircutting
and understanding is what I do. I wish to go back to
original principles, maintaining high standards and
simplifying what has become complicated over the
years."
With encouragement from clients, friends and local
community, 19 Rathbone Street will be a welcoming
and exclusive home, its basement shielding prying
eyes. We will be as sustainable as possible, re-using
furniture and sourcing local handmade products.
My philosophy is that a haircut must look and feel
totally natural, texture and clients must be assessed,
and the cut executed with total knowledge and
expertise. Wash and wear hair, finished simply with
minimal products and labour.
With simplicity re-mastered, learning and training
programs run continually for the team and

HEALTH
Winter is once again at our door, Swine Flu is knocking
and the economic crisis still looms overhead. With all
this doom and gloom around us, it is all the more im-
portant that we keep our immune systems strong and
our spirits high this season.
It is easy to remain in good health with the help of
a few simple remedies. Adding chopped garlic, onions
and ginger to your meals can help increase circulation
and keep colds at bay due to their antimicrobial action.
Fresh honey, lemon and grated ginger in hot water are
antibacterial, good for soothing dry, sore throats and
are suitable for the whole family. The same can be said
for chamomile and cinnamon.
A good quality Echinacea tincture, available from
your local health food store is great for supporting
your body’s natural defense mechanisms and can
compliment sugar-free Vitamin C and Zinc
supplements, which are also fantastic for bolstering the
immune system.
Finally, inhalation of Eucalyptus or Olbas Essential Oil
can help clear congested sinuses and are usually
found in every home’s medicine cabinet.
When it comes to good health, there is no substitute
for eating fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables, getting
plenty of rest and maintaining a good exercise
routine. Make your home a haven this winter by
acquainting yourself with the herbs and spices in
your kitchen and use these simple health tips to
enjoy feeling good this festive season.14 Central Life Issue Four

The Way It Is Feel Good Factor Returning

London market seems to be the more robust than
people ever imagined. In 2008 prices were affected
but blue chip properties still commanded healthily
prices. Most affected then were flats in secondary
locations. However, 2009 has been very different,
with buyer confidence returning and a shortage of
available housing there are more buyers than
properties. There are still a few buyers being
cautious, but many are not. Some buyers have
emerged from our European neighbouring countries
as the Euro exchange rate is strong and cash-rich
investors earning little interest on their money in
banks are returning to the tried and tested formula
of bricks and mortar.
So what does 2010 hold? With only a couple of
years remaining until the Olympics rush we expect
further investment from overseas buyers looking to
invest in our great city. I have high hopes. The West
End is a great place to live, work and play. With great
diversity and a heritage of fantastic parks and open
spaces to walk through, amazing architecture to
admire and museums and galleries to visit, it’s all
there for us all to enjoy.
With 2008 a fading memory, we have smiled again
this year. I am confident, indeed certain of a full
London recovery – the doctor has prescribed the
medicine and our city is responding well - it may take
a while yet to reach all areas but I am confident we
will be the picture of health again soon.

As the end of 2009 emerges, we leave it behind
feeling more optimistic than last Christmas. People
have abandoned their consumer overspending of
2008 in favour of more valuable pursuits. Family life,
cooking a wonderful meal at home, using that gym
membership more often and being content to
forego some of those expensive luxuries. The credit
crunch taught us a hard lesson - that increasing your
debt on the ‘never never’ is a dangerous game and
the harsh fact is that we should avoid overextending
ourselves as circumstances can change all too quickly,
as we recently have seen.
Amazingly, it is now over two years since Northern
Rock had a run on savings! There have been scares
since with some big names being bailed out by the
government but recent news is certainly more
positive. The recession is ending and barring any major
setbacks, economists are confident the worst is over.
With the global recession largely originating in the
States it is indicative of how closely linked we are
with our friends across the pond. And since the US is
our biggest single trading partner, accounting for 15%
of our import and export trade, it is encouraging to
hear that the US is now experiencing growth at a
fairly brisk pace. A large proportion of the rest of
our trade is with the founding EU countries (the
European Union), such as France and Germany, who
have already emerged from recession - another
encouraging sign.
So what does this mean for London’s future
property market? It is certainly true that the central

Newly lit up in a brilliant array of colour to mark the count down of 1,000 days until the Olympics, the revolving restaurant at the top of the BT Tower is rumoured to be about to undergo refurbishmentso it can re-open in 2011 for the first time in nearly30 years.
Located on the 34th floor of the iconic tower, celebrity chefs Heston Blumenthal, Jamie Oliver andGary Rhodes are said to have been approached toopen the restaurant, which has not been open to thepublic since 1980 when the Top of the Tower venuewas forced to close after 14 years, partly because ofincreased security fears. An IRA bomb had explodedin the lavatories in 1971 when Butlins, better knownfor running holiday camps, managed the restaurant.
The revived restaurant will undergo a full refurbishment before it reopens, although one feature that will stay the same is the 10ft-wide revolving part of the floor that provides diners with a 360-degree view over the capital. It takesabout 20 minutes to complete a circuit — roughly10 minutes less than the London Eye.
When it reopens in about Christmas 2011, it is likelyto have seating for 60-70 diners.
The 581ft BT Tower took four years to build and was opened in 1965 by Harold Wilson, then primeminister. The site remains an important part of thetelecoms infrastructure, and for many years its details were covered by the Official Secrets Act. Itwas omitted from Ordnance Survey maps until themid-1990s.

Pop Up’sby Aston James
Time was when the words ‘pop up’ referred to a
toaster or a kids illustrated book. Enter 2009 and it
has a new usage. In case you didn’t know ‘pop up’
venues are all the rage. Anything from a Rembrandt
to a pigs trotter can become pop up these days,
it seems.
Selfridges installed a pop up restaurant on the roof
of their flagship store, with celebrated chef Pierre
Koffmann at the helm. Originally planned for a
two-week run it has been extended until 28th
November by public demand. I was lucky enough to
lunch there with my wife, then unlucky enough to
pay the bill, which was far in excess of the sum of
its parts.
Whilst an experience and a good one, in my opin-
ion the ‘experience’ of the meal was sitting on
Selfridges roof, not the service nor unfortunately,
the haute cuisine. Never mind, if the idea was to
make a successful commercial venture at a time
when the sector is finding it tough, it undoubtedly
worked.
So what next? What about a pop up members bar,
how would that work? Just ask Quintessentially
who have taken over the Grade 1 listed, House of
St Barnabus on the corner of Greek St and Soho
Square. With the help of some great designers, the
building has been turned into a members club – for
three months only.
They say that necessity is the mother of invention,
so pop up shops were probably invented by
Landlords to deal with retail property being empty
at crucial trading times of the year. For the last few
years we have had Banksy's Xmas Grotto in
Oxford Street but since then 'pop up' has become
the latest fashion. Whatever may be said of the
trend, it is fast growing into a phenomenon. Maybe
your space could house the next gallery or
Michelin starred chef?
