WHITEMARSH BRANCH

All daily and weekend Masses are celebrated in the Church.

PLEASE NOTE: This Tuesday, August 4, the 6:30 and 8:00 a.m. Masses

will be celebrated in the Church while adoration continues in the Chapel.

The Sacred Heart Prayer Shawl Group meets the first Wednesday of the month. This month it is August 5. The group knits and crochets shawls to be given to individuals experiencing a hardship. New members welcome. Come join the group

Wednesday, August 5 at 10:00 a.m. in Whitemarsh Hall. If you know someone going through a tough time and could benefit by having prayers wrapped around them, contact Pat Steelman at 410-721-0109.

Pray for Priests

We will have 24-hour Adoration for the priests of the Archdiocese of Washington (ADW), beginning Monday, August 3, at 8:00 p.m. and continuing through Tuesday, August 4, at 8:00 p.m. August 4 is the Feast of St. John

Vianney, Patron of Priests. Without our priests, there would be no reconciliation to restore our souls and no Holy Eucharist to nourish our Spirits. You can sign-up for a specific time slot or just drop in and spend some time praying for our priests. There will be booklets in the Chapel listing all the priests of the ADW. Each adoration hour will be dedicated to praying for specific ADW priests.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the desk of Father Ronald A. Potts:

In our first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, the prophet is addressing the Israelites who have been exiled by the Babylonians. The passage is rich in its imagery of food and drink flowing for all to have their fill. This passage gives them hope in their time of pain and exile by referring to the eschatological banquet, the banquet of the end-time, when God’s kingdom on earth will be established with an ideal king to rule over them in the name of God. Then God will make a new covenant with His people. The invitation is simple, “Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life.” The Lord will never abandon His people but always remain faithful to His promise and to them.

As we read today’s passage from Saint Paul to the Romans, we see his inability to contain himself as he realizes the fullness of God’s love and grace. He enumerates obstacles of all kinds that can confront us in our daily lives: “anguish, or distress, or persecutions . . .” but in all of these things we conquer overwhelmingly through Christ. Nothing and no one can separate us from the love of God. These words must take root in our heart because we are surrounded by so many “things” which cause us anxiety in our daily lives. The world can “play on” our fears and our anxieties and shake us to our very core. It is Paul who reminds us to remain steadfast in the gift of hope realizing that God never abandons us. We are the Lord’s and we belong to Him and our hope will not be disappointed.

In today’s Gospel from St. Matthew, we find the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. The crowds have followed Jesus to catch up with Him after He took a boat to a deserted place. When Jesus arrives, He sees all the people waiting for Him. “His heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured all their sick.” The disciples are concerned because it is late and the people are hungry and there is no where to buy food. However, Jesus tells them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” Fives loaves of bread and two fish are found—that is all. In helping the disciples to realize their utter helplessness, Jesus wants them to turn to Him in faith. He is trying to teach them a simple lesson, “Turn to me.” For, with Me, you will see the bread multiply in your hands. Jesus takes the bread and fish “looks up to heaven,” “to say the blessing,” and “to give”—all of these gestures have Eucharistic overtones. At Mass today, we are reminded that Jesus takes our simple gifts of bread and wine and by the power of the Holy Spirit are transformed into His Body and Blood so that we might all be fed. Just as there was an overabundance of loaves and fishes when Jesus fed the large crowd so we receive grace beyond our imagining in receiving the precious Body and Blood of Jesus.

Please remember in your prayers the souls of the FAITHFUL DEPARTED especially Agnes Rotondo.

The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is celebrated on August 6. It commemorates one of the pinnacles of Jesus' earthly life, when he revealed his divinity to three of his closest disciples by means of a miraculous and supernatural light. Christ climbed to a high point on Mount Tabor with his disciples Peter, James, and John. While Jesus prayed upon the mountain, his appearance was

changed by a brilliant white light which shone from him and from his clothing. During this event, the Old Testament figures of Moses and the prophet Elijah also appeared, and spoke of how Christ would suffer and die after entering Jerusalem, before his resurrection. The Gospels record that the voice of God was heard, confirming Jesus as his son. Pope Benedict XVI described how the events of the transfiguration display Christ as the “full manifestation of God's light.” This light, which shines forth from Christ both at the transfiguration and after his resurrection, is ultimately triumphant over “the power of the darkness of evil.” The Feast of the Transfiguration is an important opportunity for us to look to Christ as “the light of the world,” and to experience the kind of conversion which the Bible frequently describes as an emergence from darkness to light. “In our time too,” Pope Benedict said, “we urgently need to emerge from the darkness of evil, to experience the joy of the children of light!”

Vacations are a very important part of our life. But let us not forget to nourish and rejuvenate the spiritual part of us as we enjoy the physical and mental respite of our vacations. Wherever you are in the U.S., you’ll find the nearest Church and Mass schedule at www.masstimes.org.
