World Issues

• The Vietnam war had divided and exhausted the nation.

• The civil rights movement and the women's rights movement had achieved their early goals.

Politics

• The republican party appealing to conservations became a force in North Carolina for the first time since 19th century.

Economy

• The oil crisis in 1973 was caused when Arab members of the organization of (OPEC) during the Yom Kippur war announced that they would no longer ship petroleum to nations that had supported Israel and its conflict with Syria and Egypt.

• Because of it the price of oil increased dramatically.

Technology

• The 70’s were the start in many ways of the electronics and digital revolution.

• The 70’s also saw the beginning of home computers due to Intel creating the first cheap microprocessor.

• The first use of card access electronic locks appear.

Fads/ Fashion

• The waterbed made by Charles hall in 1968 was a big fad.

• Some of the clothes they wore were bellbottom jeans, short mini skirts, maxi dresses, midi skirts, and hot pants, leather vests and disco hair

TV Shows

• Some of the TV shows are The Waltons, Dukes of Hazzard, The Muppet show, The Brady Bunch and All in the Family.

• Star Wars was a big film in the 70’s as well as Jaws, Grease, Rocky, and Saturday night fever

• State and national politics began to reflect divisions that had grown in the 1960’s

• The republican party, appealing to conservatives, became a force in north Carolina for the first time since the nineteenth century.

North Carolina held its first presidential primary election on may 6th 1972

When the 1972 Democratic Presidential campaign began, there were no clear leaders. U.S. Senators Edmund Muskie, Hubert Humphrey, and George McGovern were viewed as the establishment candidates, with McGovern eventually winning the nomination.
