Decarbonization: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Opportunity

Many states in the U.S. and even some countries around the world are setting their sights on reducing carbon emissions. Governing officials have set emissions targets and have introduced carbon-based market mechanisms, such as cap-and-trade to achieve these goals. This session will help attendees sort through the decarbonization movement, including programs such as zero net energy, zero and near zero emission regulations, and the low carbon fuel standard. Attendees will learn what role propane can play in helping governing entities to meet clean air quality goals and how propane companies can assist their customers with sustainability initiatives.

Michael Sloan has more than 30 years of experience in the energy field. He provides a wide variety of market trend analysis and demand forecasting services to the propane industry, including U.S. propane supply outlook; propane demand assessments at the national, state, and county levels; and market trend analyses on issues related to use per customer, new construction market share, and propane competition with alternative fuels in different end-uses and regions. Mr. Sloan has testified on a variety of issues related to propane market economics and pricing

practices, natural gas storage market power, pipeline facility expansion economics, natural gas storage economics and landowner issues, and natural gas market liquidity.

Matthew Solak is the Vice President of Kindsvatter, Dalling & Associates (KDA). He joined the firm in 2013 after years of service as a staff member in the Michigan Legislature and working for a leading trade association in Washington, D.C. At KDA, Mr. Solak manages a diverse portfolio of association management and lobbying clients. Mr. Solak serves in the Executive Director capacity for five state associations—including the Pacific Propane Gas Association and Indiana Propane Gas Association. Additionally, Mr. Solak maintains an extensive lobbying clientele

working on the issues important to them with decision makers in Lansing. Mr. Solak earned his B.A. in political science and history from Valparaiso University.

Peter Ward is the Principal at Alternative Fuels Advocates, LLC. The company works with companies, businesses, agencies and individuals to increase the use of clean, low-carbon alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies. Prior to his current role, Peter Ward served as Program Manager for the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program, overseeing the state’s annual $100 million incentive program and the development of its annual Investment Plan. The Plan allocates the financial resources to be invested in the most

promising alternative fuel and advanced vehicle technology project areas, with a focus on accelerating commercialization and deployment of the fuels and vehicles in California.
