Measuring Energy EfficiencyUnderstanding the following three terms

will help you make smart choices whensearching for ways to make your windowsmore energy efficient.

• U-factor: The window industrymeasures the energy efficiency in terms ofthermal transmission, also known as U-factor.The U-factor shows you how well the window

keeps the air conditioned temperature insideyour home from escaping outside. A low U-factor means the window will insulate yourhouse better.

• Solar heat gain: This measures howwell the window blocks heat from the sunfrom getting indoors.

• R-value: Insulating products arerated in terms of thermal resistance – howwell the product resists heat loss. The higherthe R-value, the more effective the insulation.

Insulation OptionsHomeowners have several options for

improving window insulation. Blinds, drapesand shades offer minimal energy savings.Interior plantation shutters are a good waymany homeowners choose to increase energyefficiency while adding distinctive style.

Ordinary shutters can allow significantairflow and heat transfer through unsealedgaps. The Polywood Shutter InsulatingSystem was created by Sunburst Shutters toreduce temperature flow through windows.Polywood has been tested and proven toreduce heat transfer and significantly improvethe U-factor, solar heat gain and R-value ofany window. Adding Polywood to a standarddouble paned window provides a U-factor of0.10 and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.17 -

which are better ratings than mostreplacement windows by themselves.

The Polywood shutter’s inner core is madefrom materials that act as an insulator, and thepanels have built-in weather stripping and aunique paint finish which reflectstemperature.
