The Board was not kidding when they told me during theinterview process that this is a very busy Club, and obviously I amnot telling you anything that you do not already know. There areso many ways for you to enjoy your time here at the Club at BocaPointe. If you are not participating in the full range of ouractivities, I would like to know why.

Our new website has a calendar with all of the activities laid outin an easy to navigate format. This is where you need to go on aregular basis to check in with all that is going on at the Club.Clicking on an event will open a window that details the event, allowing you to make a reservation right then and there. Havingthis very important reservation function directly in your handswill reduce the likelihood of errors in the reservation process. Weare also requiring reservations when dinner is served in the MainDining Room– again we believe this will improve yourexperience.

By the time you read this we will be well into our 2009/2010Season. I trust that your lifestyle is being enhanced bymembership in the Club. Please do your part by exposing theClub to friends who you would like to see join. It is all about

exposure, and your friends are more likely to joinif they have a positive experience with you astheir impetus for joining. We have numerousnon-equity memberships available to get theirfoot in the door. It is our goal that they willbecome more involved with the Club once insideand eventually graduate to Equity Membership.Linda Sakkal (561-864-8537) and AnnaMarie Lauto (561-864-8538) are standing byready and willing to assist in the membershipprocess, so do not be shy.

Feedback as to my level of communication has beenpositive. In addition to the various means ofcommunicating directly with me, you as a Membercan also voice your opinion on Club specific issues forall Members to see on our online blog. This blog can befound on the home page of our new website in thebottom right hand corner. You are encouraged to voiceyour opinion here and hopefully get a constructivedialogue going on all sorts of Club issues.

Though the national news continues to be gloomy, we atthe Club at Boca Pointe are enjoying a surge in activity.More than 100 new members have joined the Club sinceSeptember 1, and our activities continue to be fullysubscribed and supported.

An area that I am focusing on is a Strategic Plan for the Club. This will include a 10-year Capital Improvement Plan as wellas recommendations regarding the programs offered to ourMembers and membership prospects. I am a firm believer in“measuring twice & cutting once.” Therefore, having a longterm, Board-approved plan is vital. It is important to show youand our potential Members that we have charted our future ina professional fashion. Not only does it bring a sense ofsecurity to the table, it will also give everybody a good idea ofthe Club’s financial needs over that same period of time.

I trust that you had a wonderful Holiday Season. On behalf ofthe entire management and staff, I would like to wish you aHappy & Healthy New Year. We all look forward to seeing youat the Club.

from the chairman - Sandy SchneiderBoard Message

By the time this message ispublished, our new GeneralManager, Ian Fetigan, will havebeen at The Club at BocaPointe for three months. Hehas clearly made a positiveimpact and has impressed all ofus with his commitment andleadership. Although 100% ofour membership do not own or

use a computer, the vast majority of us have been receiving Ian’sweekly message with links to all of the senior staff and ourwebsite. Changes throughout, especially to food service, areevident and Ian has made every effort to seek the opinions of ourmembers regarding proposed changes. Those of you who havetaken the time to respond have been extremely helpful in decidingwhether new programs, menus, etc. will be implemented. Yourcontinued input is very helpful and is appreciated.

By the time you read this our remodeling in the main lobbybathrooms and the center court café and restrooms will becompleted. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and willmake every effort to plan future projects so they are completedwell in advance of the winter season. We were a bit hesitant toembark on any changes until we completed work on our budgetfor the fiscal year 2009-2010 and unfortunately ran into thetypical annoying problems associated with permitting andconstruction. I know, having been associated with constructionfor many years, that delays are not unusual.

But, in spite of all the delays, our members have taken theinconvenience in stride. It seems to me that most of our membersare smiling these days. I feel such a sense of joy and optimism forthe future of this Club. As I speak to our members, we receivesuch positive comments and statements. “The food is great”; “weloved the show”; “the Athletic Center is beautiful”; “the party wasawesome”; “the lectures are phenomenal”; “Friday nights aregreat fun”; etc. We’ve managed to attract many new memberswho are enjoying varied offerings of our Club based on theirpersonal lifestyle needs. I feel a great sense of satisfaction that ournew image and marketing efforts are paying off. I thank myfellow board members, our present and past GM, and ourmembership office for their hard work and vision.

I know that change is sometimes hard for us totake. There are a few members who still longfor the good old days of 2,000+ members and awaiting list. But those days are over. And,whether we achieve unanimous support fromour members or not, we will still do our best tolead this Club into the 21st century. We willcontinue to make those changes that arenecessary to keep a competitive edge and toprovide top-notch service and activities to all.

Efforts are underway to introduce our Club toresidents of Boca Pointe who might be persuaded tojoin and take advantage of our membershipoptions. We must do all that we can to make ourfellow residents feel welcome at our Club. Membershave always been our best source of new members. Please invite your friends and relatives to join. Bringthem here as your guests and show them around.Show pride in our Club and share it with others !!

I want to remind you again that we will be having anelection on March 8th to fill three seats on the Board. You will have the opportunity to meet the candidates onFebruary 1st.

Our new board will meet soon thereafter to elect officers.Subsequently, the Board will appoint committeechairmen, co-chairmen and members. Again, I ask thatthose of you who can contribute to our future to carefullyconsider running for the Board and/or seek membership ona committee. I look forward to many of you applying to becandidates so we can have an exciting and competitiveelection.

A highlight of the afternoon was the debut performance of thequasi Latin Sensations, Desi (Angel), Senior Jeff and Senior George in ahot Salsa karaoke set. Athletics Center12 Suggestions for Taking Care of Yourself

12. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE.Slow down. Practice sitting quietly. Listen to your inner voice. Spendtime thinking about the things that bring peace, beauty and serenity toyour life. Find the courage to follow your own spiritual path if atraditional religion has not been helpful for you.

THE MANTRA THAT HELPS YOU LIVE LONGER

The last thing we all need right now is another doom-and-gloomheadline. So try this mantra as an antidote: Good times are coming.

Think it. Believe it. Say it to yourself often as often as it takes to putyourself in a more positive frame of mind. Not only could it put morebounce in your step, but research shows it may add miles to your life, too.

GREAT EXPECTATIONSIt’s all about attitude. And the right one did a lot for the women in astudy. Those with the most optimism--a belief that good things willhappen—enjoyed a 14 percent lower risk of dying from any causeduring the study, compared with their most pessimistic peers. And thewomen who saw the glass as half full were also 30 percent less likely todevelop heart disease.

RAISING RESILIENCEThe study findings don’t necessarily prove that a bad attitude shortenslife. But cultivating a positive mood certainly can’t hurt you. A positiveattitude does a bunch of good stuff for your health—like setting you upto cope with stress in healthier ways (such as meditation instead ofdrinking). Positive people may also deal with stress better and livelonger because they tend to enjoy deeper social connections then cynicaltypes do.

1. LEARN TO AIR YOUR FEELINGS.Don’t keep them bottled up inside you. Share your sorrows anddisappointments with someone you trust. Remember, expressedfeelings are changed feelings.

2. AVOID COMPARING YOURSELF WITH OTHERSBY ADMIRING THEIR GIFTS AND IGNORINGYOUR GIFTS.

This kind of envy causes self-disgust. Put no one’s headhigher than your own

3. FORM A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE YOUCAN CALL ON FOR EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.Agree to “be there” for each other. Offer advice only when it isasked for. Listen without interrupting. Take turns talking andlistening.

4. TAKE TIME TO PLAY.Remember that play is any activity that you do just because itfeels good. Remind yourself that you deserve to take time to play.

5. DON’T FORGET TO LAUGH, ESPECIALLYAT YOURSELF.Look for the humor in things around you. Let your hair downmore often. Do something silly and totally unexpected fromtime to time.

6. LEARN TO RELAX.You can find books, tapes, programs, classes, instructors andother materials to teach you how to relax. Relaxationimproves the mind, helps the body heal, and feels so muchbetter than stress and tension.

7. PROTECT YOUR RIGHT TO BE HUMAN.Don’t let others put you on a pedestal. When people putyou on a pedestal, they expect you to be perfect and feelangry when you let them down.

8. LEARN TO SAY NO.As you become comfortable saying no to theunreasonable expectations, requests or demands ofothers you will discover that you have more compassion. When you do say yes to others, you will feel better aboutyourself and the people you’re responding too.

9. CHANGE JOBS IF YOU AREMISERABLE AT WORK.First, try to figure out if the job is wrong for you or ifcertain people are causing you to feel miserable at work.Try paying more attention to the things you enjoy aboutyour job and less attention to the things that annoy you.Remember that all jobs have some unpleasant aspects.

10. STRETCH YOUR MUSCLES.Break a sweat. Go for a walk. Ride a bike. Park fartheraway from the door. Take the stairs. You don’t needfancy clothes, or expensive equipment to add exercise toyour daily life.

11. PRACTICE BEING A POSITIVE,ENCOURAGING PERSON.Each time you give others a word of encouragement younot only feel better, but you build up your best self.

Paloma is the daughter of an upper-classfamily living in the upscale Parisian apartmentbuilding where Renée works.Featuring a number of erudite characters, TheElegance of the Hedgehog is full of allusions toliterary works, music, films and paintings. Itincorporates themes relating to philosophy, classconsciousness and personal conflict. The eventsand ideas of the novel are presented through thethoughts and reactions, interleaved throughoutthe novel, of two narrators, Renée and Paloma. Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - The Tender Barby J.R. Moehringer Reservations open 1/28/10

J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. Itwas the voice of his father, a New York City discjockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his firstword. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to theradio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummybaritone the secrets of masculinity and identity.Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, hecraved something more, something faintly and

hauntingly audible only in The Voice. At eight years old, suddenly unable to find The Voice on theradio, J.R. turned in desperation to the bar on the corner, wherehe found a rousing chorus of new voices. Cops and poets, bookies and soldiers, movie stars and stumblebums, all sorts ofmen gathered in the bar to tell their stories and forget theircares. The alphas along the bar—including J.R.'s Uncle Charlie,a Humphrey Bogart look-alike; Colt, a Yogi Bear sound-alike;and Joey D, a softhearted brawler—took J.R. to the beach, toballgames and ultimately into their circle. They taught J.R.,tended him and provided a kind of fatherhood-by-committee. Torn between the stirring example of his mother and the luridromance of the bar, J.R. tried to forge a self somewhere in thecenter. But when it was time for J.R. to leave home, the barbecame an increasingly seductive sanctuary, a place to returnand regroup during his picaresque journeys—from hisgrandfather's tumbledown house to the hallowed towers andspires of Yale; from his absurd stint selling housewares at Lord& Taylor to his dream job at the New York Times, which becamea nightmare when he found himself a faulty cog in a vastmachine. Time and again the bar offered shelter from failure, rejection, heartbreak--and eventually from reality. In the grand tradition of landmark memoirs, The Tender Bar issuspenseful, wrenching and achingly funny. A classic Americanstory of self-invention and escape, of the fierce love between asingle mother and an only son, it's also a moving portrait ofone boy's struggle to become a man, and an unforgettabledepiction of how men remain, at heart, lost boys.

Orphaned by their mother’sdeath in childbirth and their father’s disappearance, boundtogether by a preternatural connection and a shared fascinationwith medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on thebrink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics—their passionfor the same woman—that will tear them apart and forceMarion, fresh out of medical school, to flee his homeland. Hemakes his way to America, finding refuge in his work as anintern at an underfunded, overcrowded New York City hospital. When the past catches up to him—nearly destroying him—Marion must entrust his life to the two men he thought hetrusted least in the world: the surgeon father who abandonedhim and the brother who betrayed him.
