Note!

33 Move ‘em out!

Place your steam locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O-31 or larger track.• With track power OFF, connect the locomotive tether between the locomotive

and tender. The four-pin tender plug connects with the four-pin receptacle on thelocomotive. Connect the drawbar between locomotive and tender.

• The engine tether receptacle is “keyed” to allow the harness to be plugged in onlyone way.

11Running your steam locomotive with a Lionel transformer

Note!

Power up your steam locomotive with your transformer.

• Your locomotive is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternatingcurrent. Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current trans-formers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMaster Command model railroadcontrol system.

• Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur.

• When you first power up your track, the locomotive will waitbetween 3 and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language from theTrainMaster Command Base (available separately). When it’s determined that it’son a conventional (non-Command) railroad, the locomotive’s headlight will illu-minate and RailSounds will start up. At this point, the locomotive is in neutral.(This occurs when placing the locomotive on your railroad for the first time.Thereafter, it starts in forward after every three-second power interrupt.)

• Get your locomotive moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1 remote orLionel transformer. This sequences the Lionel Command reverse unit (R2LC) tothe next operating state. The R2LC alternates between three states: forward, neu-tral, and reverse.

• Adjust track voltage until your locomotive moves at your desired speed. Toincrease speed, increase track voltage. To decrease speed, reduce voltage. To stopthe locomotive, cut track power.

To select a single operational state foryour Lionel locomotive (example: for-

ward only), you can deactivate the R2LC’ssequencing function with the Program/Runswitch, located on the right hand side, underthe locomotive’s cab.

Get your locomotive moving in the desired

direction, then slow it down without stop-ping. Set the Program/Run switch to PROG.The locomotive is now “locked” into yourchosen direction.

When you no longer want single-directionoperation, just slide the Program/Run switchback to RUN.

Your locomotive’s Odyssey™ System speed control

You can lock your locomotive into speedcontrol mode (ideal for low speed opera-

tion) so it will automatically compensate forgrades, or to simply maintain a specificspeed setting. To turn on the speed control, get your locomotive moving at the desiredspeed, in forward or reverse. Let it run atthe desired speed for at least 5 seconds. Pressand hold the horn/whistle button for 2-3 sec-onds as you increase the throttle by at least 3 volts. Your locomotive will acceleratebriefly, then will return to your set speed onceyou release the horn/whistle button. As longas the throttle position is maintained at ahigher setting than the initial level, yourlocomotive will maintain a constant speed. Ifthe throttle is turned below the original level, your locomotive will slow down due to theavailable voltage decrease below the “set”level. To check if the speed control settinghas been “accepted,” turn up the throttle. You will see the lights brighten, but the speedwill remain constant. For best results, adjustthe track voltage about 3-4 volts above the“set” point. This will provide enough spare

voltage to compensate for uphill grades, etc.,but will prevent excessive voltage to thelamps and smoke unit. (In conventionalmode, these operate at track voltage, andexcessive voltage may lead to premature bulbburn-out.)

• If you wish to change the speed controlsetting, you must deactivate the speedcontrol, then reactivate at the new setting.

To turn speed control off, get your loco-motive into neutral for at least 5 seconds.Press the horn/whistle button for 2-3 secondswhile lowering the throttle voltage to 1/4 offull power or at least three volts. Do not turnthe throttle off or speed control may notdeactivate. This can be difficult if you haveestablished a low speed control setting. Onceyou are in neutral, you can increase thetrack voltage before pressing the horn/whis-tle button and lowering the voltage. This willgive you more “room” to lower the voltage.(The speed control deactivates when it sees a3 volt change with horn/whistle pressed, regardless of initial voltage level.)

Note! Speed control settings are retained in memory even if power is turned off. They will remain present until deactivated.

Your locomotive’s RailSounds system—the basics

L ionel RailSounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in the

world. Your locomotive features digital sam-ples from real-life steam locomotives for theultimate in realism.

Begin by installing a 9-volt alkaline battery in the tender. This ensures interrup-tion-free operation of RailSounds. The bat-tery clip is located in the tender. To removethe tender body, refer to the diagram on page7 for the Northern Pacific-style of tender and on page 8 for the Southern Pacific-styleof tender.

When you first apply track power, the loco-motive’s RailSounds system produces soundsof the locomotive at rest. As the locomotivemoves, chuffing begins, increasing with thelocomotive’s speed.

To silence the steam chuffing sound (whis-tle/bell are unaffected), slide the RailSoundsswitch to the OFF position before poweringup the locomotive. The whistle is activatedby using the lever or button on your trans-former or CAB-1. Use the volume controlknob to raise or lower the level of sound.

Using your locomotive tender’s ElectroCoupler in the non-Command environment

To use your locomotive tender’s Electro-Coupler in the non-Command environ-

ment, you must first couple a piece of rollingstock equipped with Lionel magnetic cou-plers directly to your locomotive tender’s rear

ElectroCoupler. The magnetic coupler on therolling stock will then react to the magneticfield generated by a Lionel remote-controltrack section (available separately). Placeyour rolling stock’s coupler “trigger disc”over the central coil of a remote-controltrack section and press “uncouple” on thecontroller. The magnetic field pulls the discdownward, and the coupler opens.

Your locomotive tender’sElectroCoupler will NOT openmanually or by using aremote-control track section.

Experiencing the range of your locomotive’s RailSounds system

Notes on RailSounds• Use the volume control dial, to adjust

sound output.• Listen for incidental locomotive sounds

during RailSounds operation. They’reautomatic and, of course, authentic.

• The 9-volt alkaline battery you installedensures continuous sounds, even duringshort track-power interrupts.

• Longer track-power interruptions(including locomotive derailments)cause RailSounds to shut down afterabout 7 seconds.

• For even more authentic RailSoundseffects, operate your locomotive in theTrainMaster Command environment. Seepage 12-13 for details.

Transformer operations

W ith RailSounds, you experience thesounds of real railroading like never

before. Simply put, it’s the most sophisticat-ed, authentic model railroad sound system inthe world. And remember—coming frominside your Lionel locomotive’s tender arethe authentic sounds of the RailSounds digi-tal sound system. No other electric train canoffer you authentic sounds. That’s thepower of Lionel.• Variable chuff rate. Your locomotive

speed determines the steam chuff rate. • MultiWhistleTM. Different whistles

every time—a RailSounds exclusive.• Authentic bell. Press BELL on your

CAB-1 or transformer to begin the effect, again to discontinue. Even the final “hit”is muted like the real thing.

• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3-5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the locomotive telling you its R2LCCommand reverse unit has just reset toforward operation.

• Shutdown sequence. No other modelrailroad sound system shuts down likeRailSounds. Turn off track power, andafter the air-release reset sound, you havetwo seconds to restart your locomotive. Ifyou’re done with operations, RailSoundswill commence with an authentic shut-down sequence about two seconds afterthe air-release reset occurs.

Battery must be installed for shutdown sequence.Note!

Your locomotive in the TrainMaster Command environment

Lionel TrainMaster Command is the fun and sophisticated model railroad con-

trol system from Lionel. Your locomotive fea-tures the R2LC reverse unit, which acts asboth a conventional reverse unit as well asthe key to unlocking many extra featureswhen you operate in Command mode.

TrainMaster Command gives you thepower to operate multiple Command-

equipped locomotives on the same track, atthe same time. It’s the most fun you canhave with electric trains, and it’s incrediblyeasy too! Just follow the directions below andyou’ll be on your way.

To operate in Command mode, youneed a Command Base and a CAB-1remote. Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.

Place your locomotive on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O-31 or larger track.• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communica-

tions wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lionel transformer orthe U terminal on any of your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

Address your locomotive with CAB-1.• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This

command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which then translatesyour commands into digital code. That code is sent around your railroad’soutside rails in the form of a digital “halo.” All Command-equipped Lionelslisten to this digital communication, but they do not respond until theyhear their own ID number.

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not track power—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels. Track power is simplylike gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives you the power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or how fast to get there.

• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmedwith an ID# of “1.” To change your locomotive ID#, see page 15.

Move ‘em out!• Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your locomo-

tive will respond to your every command. Read on. The fun is just beginning!

Due to the inevitable derailments, static, and the nature of electricity, it is possi-

ble that your R2LC could someday lose itssetup program.

The symptoms of this condition would beunresponsiveness in Command mode. Thiscan be easily remedied by “reprogramming”your R2LC using the following steps.

Maintaining your locomotive’s handrail antenna

Y our locomotive handrails are morethan just model grab irons—they’re

the R2LC’s antenna for receiving CommandBase digital communications. Please handlethe locomotive carefully to avoid handraildamage. To ensure optimum reception, bothhandrails are insulated from the die-cast

shell. If your locomotive experiences difficul-ty receiving Base communications, check thehandrail ends in the cab and pilot for thepresence of insulating material. Ensure thateach insulator is present and enjoys a properfit. Finally, prevent the handrails from touch-ing any part of the die-cast locomotive cab.

H elp your Lionel locomotive lead a longand productive life on your railroad by

maintaining it properly. We recommend you purchase a Lionel

Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (part no. 6-62927), available from your Lioneldealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind:never over-lubricate (a smallamount will do), and avoid gettinggrease or oil on the locomotivewheels, contact rollers, or yourtrack.

You’ll know your locomotive requireslubrication when visual inspection revealsdryness on the parts indicated in theillustration. Remove accumulated dirt anddust before lubricating, and always lubricateany locomotive emerging from prolonged

storage. Also, lightly lubricate thelocomotive side rods, drive rods, linkage, front and rear truck pivotpoints, and tender wheel bearings

after each 25 hours ofoperation.

Adding fluid to your locomotive smoke generator

Your locomotive is equipped with a smokegenerator that produces safe, clean,

white smoke during operation. The smoke generator requires the periodic

addition of Lionel smoke fluid in order tofunction. Pierce the fluid tube’s end with apin, then add 8 to 10 drops of fluid directlyinto the smoke stack. Smoke production willcommence momentarily, faster if you runyour locomotive at speed. When smoke pro-duction wanes, add more fluid (8 to 10drops).

In Command Control, when the locomotive

is first placed on the track and powered up,the smoke generator will be in a default“OFF” position. Using any function key onyour CAB-1 remote will turn the smoke gener-ator on. Turning off the sound (AUX1-5) orresetting the engine (AUX1-0) will return thesmoke unit to the initial “OFF” position.Always keep a small amount of smoke fluidin the locomotive smoke generator; the gener-ator’s element can become damaged if operat-ed without fluid. Smoke production is greaterat higher voltages and when the locomotive ispulling a heavy load or long consist.

Note! Always keep smoke fluid in your locomotive smoke generator. If not, turn it off whensmoke is not desired using the switch shown on page 4 or the AUX1-8 command ifyou are running in Command mode. Using Smoke Boost with depleted fluid candamage the generator’s element.

Maintaining and servicing your locomotive

Your locomotive is equipped with Tire-Traction. This means that two of the

drive wheels are fitted with rubber tractiontires to enhance tractive effort so your loco-motive can pull many cars at once.

Lionel has provided extra traction tires toreplace the installed traction tires if they

wear out. Simply unscrew the drive rod nutfrom the wheel using a 4mm nut driver, slipoff the old traction tire and remove it fromunder the drive rod. Place the traction tire onthe wheel and re-tighten the drive rod nut. You’re now ready to pull that long freightback to the yard.
