Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 6, 2019

The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger First Reading: Habakkuk 1: 2-3; 2: 2-4

Responsorial: Psalm 95: 1-2, 6-7, 8-9

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1: 6-8, 13-14

Gospel: Luke 17: 5-10

“The word of the Lord

remains for ever. This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.”

Our Parish History continues, Part III: St Joseph Parish recognizes in the above historical and ecclesial considerations an oppor-tunity to further cross-fertilize and unite the multi-ethnic and -linguistic cultural riches of its faith community, in order to transcend a "parallel parishes" syndrome. In 2018-19 the Pastoral Council focused on ways to provide more social interaction and practical unity across ethnic groups. Besides restoring Sunday Coffee and Donuts, several events were added to the calendar under the leadership of parochial vicar Fr Paolo Dayto: 1st Annual International Taste of St Joseph (in February), Summer Bingo Bonanza (in June), Micro-nesian Cultural Festival (August), and Fall Harvest Festival (coming up in November). John Paul II considered it crucial for faith to "become" culture; we wish to see these in-carnated cultural riches shared from past and present in a rich and vibrant newly incar-nate parish spirituality. In particular, inspired by Pius XI and John Paul II on "Christian Education," we see as integral to our mission of being a "Center of Catholic Life in the [Willamette] Valley," the development of what, for want of a better term, might be called a "Catholic Culture Institute" (CCI), as a programmatic direction for bringing about such an intensified "communion" with our Catholicity past and present, as "Liturgical, Lived, and Literate" (sacred music, drama, art/customs, intellectual engagement). This intention-al "retrieval of tradition" by a local "mediating institution" (e.g., parish) is relevant to current American social challenges. Christopher Dawson notes that in colonial Protestant America, "it was the sect or Church, and in many cases the individual congregation, that was the real cultural unit" (The Dividing of Christendom [1965], Ignatius, 2008, page 197). Yuval Levin, in The Fractured Republic: Renewing America's Social Contract in the Age of Individualism (Basic Books, Perseus Books Group, 2016) develops a strong case for today's society to revive the role of such mediating institutions in the formation of virtuous citizenry, capable of liberty, avoiding the peril of out-of-control individualism (and eccentricity and lawlessness) that provokes as an opposing force the equivalent of a police state. St Joseph School, a parish ministry included within the larger parish Christian Education faith formation process, with a rich, balanced ethnic mix, has been for some years making efforts to align itself, implicitly, with this vision which we are attempting better to articu-late for the whole parish. That is, "Faith, Knowledge, Virtue," are seen as goals rooted in assimilating Catholic culture in a more intense way, and allowing it to permeate every activity of the School. We wish to honor and reinforce what has begun, including liturgi-cal and prayer and devotional experiences that have been inspired by Benedict XVI's li-turgical scholarship and pastoral vision. None of this in any way should be construed as a retreat from normal standards of academic excellence and development of the communi-tarian identity of the human person: far from it, we aim to foster graduates who are Saints and Scholars, leaders for the future, who have received here "cultivation of the vir-tues" (cultus virtutum). In particular we see the development of Catholic musical culture as an integral compo-nent of student formation. Chartres was famous, and distinct from monastic, court, and university models of education preceding, surrounding, and following its own program under Canon Fulbert. There, for the young, was the "Junior Trivium/Quadrivium" of Let-ters ("grammar," i.e., "elementary" knowledge, foundational in each knowledge domain, language arts in the broad sense), Logic (careful thinking), Math, and Music. Today standardized testing largely tries to measure the first three; the final item often gets lost in budget cuts. Two Catholic schools show what can be done with music: The Madeleine, Salt Lake City (K-8); and St Paul Choir School, Archdiocese of Boston (only 4-8). The outcome? A logical person navigating all the arts and sciences with a view toward harmony within himself (integrity), in acquiring knowledge (the search for unifying truth), in contributing to the social moral order (the Common Good, Peace, Solidarity), and intent upon serving the ultimate purpose of existence (embodied in music as the quintessential blend of the mathematical structure of nature and the dynamics of interper-sonal reality): that could be said to be our goal. It is also another way of stating the nature and task of Christian Education articulated by Pius XI and John Paul II -- thorough as-similation of Christian culture, in time, for eternity, the sublime end for which we were created. To be cont.
