Objective 6: Lawyering Skills Programdraft GUIDING PRINCIPLES - Objective 6

35

• Feature the Lawyering Skills Program as a distinguishing asset of the Law School• Create physical spaces that facilitate the pedagogical focus on advocacy and courtroom training, as well as

provide naming opportunities• Establish the program as a source of pride that hosts competitions and events with other law schools• Leverage the physical space in support of the law school’s goal to become nationally renowned for its

litigation and advocacy training

• Design spaces to support interactive programs where law students receive hands-on learning• Support the concept of experiential versus lecture-based learning, and align with the law school’s

pedagogical stance as a ‘practice-ready’ graduate program• House state-of-the-art technology that is being used in real courtrooms• Plan for varying uses and flexible work spaces, in particular for teams of 4-8, and groups of 16 and 25-30• Create a realistic, simulated courtroom experience

• Be able to hold mock trials and competitions in a space that accurately reflects an actual courtroom• Provide a space for informal learning, gathering, and research

• Create spaces for informal research and study for smaller groups (4-8)

Scenario 1: 2011 Ratcliff Plan for Litigation Skills Center - Moot Court

6

Strategy

• Accommodate Lawyering Skills Program needs using specific, dedicated facilities; develop a parallel online presence for the center

• Grand, iconic place• Ample space for programmatic needs

Pros

• Dedicated space necessitates expanding GGU facilities

• Costly• Challenging to meet desired levels of utilization

ConsLitigationSkillsCenter

Page 7: 7/23/12 Obj. 6 Strategy & Survey 1 Deep Dive

MKTHINK

Golden Gate University SF Remodel Project - Phase 7: Master Planning & Programming

Scenario 2: Shared Facilities throughout GGU

7

Strategy

• Accommodate Lawyering Skills Program needs (e.g. Moot Court, practice rooms) throughout Golden Gate University using shared facilities; develop an online presence for the center

• Easy to achieve high utilization of facilities• Easy to remain true to boundary of staying

within the existing envelope of space • More affordable• Could influence other GGU schools to

incorporate this way of teaching• Ample space for program needs

Pros

• Weak sense of place / identity• Less access• Not embedded in the Law School

Cons

GGU

Page 8: 7/23/12 Obj. 6 Strategy & Survey 1 Deep Dive

MKTHINK

proprietary and confidential

Golden Gate University SF Remodel Project - Phase 7: Master Planning & Programming

Scenario 3: Shared Facilities within the Law School

8

Strategy

• Accommodate Lawyering Skills Program needs in co-located, shared, primarily Law School facilities; develop a parallel online presence for the center

• Use of prime Law School space retains strong identity

• Method of teaching can influence other Law School pedagogy

• Ample space for program needs

Pros

• Would need more rooms (than in Ratcliff) outfitted to support lawyering skills because they would be shared with other Law School classes rather than dedicated spaces

Cons

Law School

Page 9: 7/23/12 Obj. 6 Strategy & Survey 1 Deep Dive

Scenarios - Space Allocation Comparison

9

Strategy

• Increase dedicated Lawyering Skills Program Space (amount to be determined) from current amount

• Increase co-located space and rooms for Lawyering Skills Program• courtrooms as classrooms, not

just classrooms as courtrooms
