You are to research and analyse healthcare performance data in at least two countries one of which must be Australia. In no more than 3,000 words, compare both countries broken down into the five (5) areas listed below.

(Be careful to pick the other country that is comparable and has the quality of data required to complete the comparison).

• This is a challenging assessment – many people struggle with this one so start early!

• Go for OECD countries

• Word limit: 3,000 words.

• Use the Health Writing and Referencing Guidelines.

• Show the data - compare & contrast data – reproduce and analyse the data

• Data – consistency, methodology, coverage & time periods

• Choice of countries – any ideas?

• Interpretation – accurate, explanation, underlying differentials, indicate clearly if no data is available.

• Make logical conclusions

• Make an appointment to see the Prof to discuss key insights

Hot tips

• It is an ESSAY – NOT a report!

• Each section is a mini essay – Intro, body & conclusions = 400 words (2 pages double spaced)

• Need to find data, reproduce data and ANALYSISE + DRAW CONCLUSIONS• Express the rates as per capita (1,000? 10,000?)

• AU has social health, insurance & safety net – other countries..??

• GB/USA have a larger population, different approaches to HC

• USA – user pays, Advanced payments, affordability/access?

• This is significant because…

• GDP spent of health 19% USA – AUS 10.3%

• Could look at rates of COVID-19

• AU 6,000 cases in AU, 62 deaths = .6 per 10,000 (comparable data)

ConclusionsThere are four basic types of conclusions you can use - PQRS - BUT JUST CHOOSE ONE TYPE

• Predict – as a result of your analysis what needs to happen in the future for both countries that you

analysed

• Quote - A relevant and pithy quote from someone influential and well-informed can be persuasive.

Make sure that you expand a discussion on your quote to make it relevant to findings in the analysis

• Repeat - You don’t want your reader to feel like you’re the same message. But at the same time, you

do want them to leave them with an impression that you have fully covered the topic.

• Summarise - When summarising, resist the urge to go over all your points again, and keep it brief. Your

summary should just bring together your main points and reinforce any recommended plan of action.
