Ellis Leading Buyer After Opener... Te Akau=s David Ellis was the leading buyer Mondayat Karaka, with 14 yearlingspurchased for NZ$2,402,500--anaverage of NZ$171,607. While he didland the NZ$740,000 session topper, most of Ellis=s buys fell in theNZ$100,000 to NZ$200,000 range, and were split evenly between coltsand fillies. His second-highest-pricedyearling was a NZ$200,000 DanehillDancer (Ire) colt produced by MSW &GSP Anatomy (Aus) (Thunder Gulch).Pencarrow Stud consigned the Sept.15-foaled bay as lot 46. The coltreceived a nice update Saturday whenhis dam=s half-brother Six O=ClockNews (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) won the G2 Wellington Cup.

Ellis founded Te Akau Stud in 1979. The operation, much in the vein of a Dogwood Stable or Team Valor, syndicates young horses. According to the Te Akauwebsite, Ellis has purchased the winners of over 100stakes races, and Te Akau's tangerine and blue colorshave been carried to victory by the likes of DarciBrahma (NZ) (Danehill), champion juvenile and

sophomore colt in New Zealand in2005-06, respectively. Darci Brahma, a NZ$1.1-millionacquisition by Ellis at the 2004Premier Sale, won five Group 1s,including the New Zealand 2000Guineas, and now stands at TheOaks Stud in New Zealand for a feeof NZ$20,000. Te Akau has beenassociated with a remarkable fivewinners of the G1 New Zealand1000 Guineas, most recently withKing's Rose (NZ) (Redoute's Choice{Aus}), and sent out last season=s G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas(video) winner Rock 'n' Pop (Aus)(Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

Two of the biggest fee increases for this yearconcern Bernardini, up to $150,000 from half thatprice, and War Front, whose remarkable early resultsled to his fee being quadrupled from $15,000 to$60,000. This year will also see Candy Ride covering at$50,000--twice the amount charged for his services in2010 and four times his 2009 fee. Last week provided further justification for all ofthese higher-level fees. War Front=s son Warning Flag--agroup-placed listed winner in Ireland as a juvenile--wonthe G1 Hong Kong Classic last Wednesday under hisnew name of Sweet Orange. In case anyone out thereis still tempted to underestimate the quality of HongKong racing, it is worth pointing out that three HongKong horses were rated 120 or higher on the recentWorld Thoroughbred Rankings.

Thanks to Home Sweet Aspen=s victory in the SantaMonica S., Candy Ride now has seven Grade I winnersto his credit from the 306 named foals in his first threecrops. His fourth crop, threeyears old in 2012, has yet toscore at the top level, butnumbers only 56 foals. Fortunately Candy Ride=s newcrop of 2-year-olds should easilycompensate for this smallercrop, as they number 137 livefoals. Candy Ride=s talent forupgrading his mares shinesthrough Home Sweet Aspen=spedigree. Her dam failed to winand none of her next threedams earned black type. HomeSweet Aspen is also the firstgraded winner descending fromany of the four. The doubling of Bernardini=sfee was fueled largely by theexploits of his impressive firstcrop, which achieved the eye-catching feat ofproducing four Grade I winners in Stay Thirsty, ToHonor and Serve, A Z Warrior and Biondetti.

Now we have the thrilling prospect that his secondcrop may prove similarly successful. This crop made abright start last year, with Gamilati winning the G2 Cherry Hinton S. and Alpha chasing home Union

Rags in the GI Champagne S.Both of these have alreadymade their mark this year. Alphatook the Count Fleet S. in thestyle of a colt who is going toflourish over longer routes, whereas Gamilati put herself inline for a tilt at the UAE 1,000Guineas with an easy conditionswin at Meydan. We have alsoseen Casual Trick go within halfa length of winning the Gulfstream Park Derby. Thissecond crop also includes J “TDN Rising Star” JConsortium, who was concedingtwo pounds when he went downby a length to Algorithms, another of Bernardini=s sons, inan optional claimer over 6 1/2furlongs in December. The two

met again in the GIII Holy Bull S. two days ago, andwhen it was Algorithms who left top-weighted Hansenbehind in the final eighth to score by five lengths.

Pedigree Insights cont.

When Lucas Marquardt looked into Algorithms=background in an AIn Sharper Focus@ feature a few daysafter the colt=s December victory, he pointed out thatStarlight Racing and partners were represented in the2006 GI Kentucky Derby by Algorithm=s half-brotherKeyed Entry. This son of Honour and Glory and AvaKnowsthecode had earned his place at Churchill Downswith a record-breaking win in the GII Hutcheson S. andwith placings in the GIII Gotham S. and GI WoodMemorial S. The Derby distance proved too much for thefree-running Keyed Entry and Marquardt pointed outthat: AThe majority of Ava Knowsthecode=s offspringhave been sprinters, or maybe milers at best. Her goodson Justin Phillip (First Samurai) won the seven-furlongGII Woody Stephens S. at Belmont this year and wasthird in the seven-furlong GI King's Bishop, whileSuccessful Mission (Successful Appeal) notched hislone graded win in the GIII Miami Mile H. All that makesyou wonder how far Algorithms will want to go.@ Hopes that Algorithms would break the mold arerightly based largely on the fact that Bernardini was amuch more Classic type than some of AvaKnowsthecode=s previous mates. Honour and Glory=svictories included the King=s Bishop S. over sevenfurlongs and the Met Mile.

His second visit to the Breeders= Cup was to contestthe Sprint, whereas Bernardini took on the older horsesin the Classic. Bernardini had previously won the GI Travers S. and GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, displayingthe type of stamina one might expect in a colt whosesire and grandsire both won the GI Belmont S. The Belmont S. also features on the lengthy resumeof Algorithms= broodmare sire Cryptoclearance.Although he finished second, Cryptoclearance wasbeaten so far by Bet Twice that there was no knowingwhether he had really stayed the trip. There can be nodoubt, though, that this very tough horse--a veteran of44 races--stayed a mile and a quarter very well. Inaddition to a win in the GI Widener H. and 10-lengthvictory in a Grade II, he was also second in the TraversS. and Gulfstream Park H. (beaten a nose). Together with his speedy half-brother Justin Phillip,Algorithms is inbred 4x3 to Fappiano. This might sounda few warning bells regarding stamina, especially asFappiano was a track-record-setting stakes winner oversix furlongs as a juvenile and later shone over a mile, winning the GI Metropolitan H. and GI Forego H.

However, this son of Mr. Prospector was also aGrade II winner over a mile and an eighth and has madean indelible mark on the Triple Crown events. Directlyresponsible for one Derby winner in Unbridled, Fappianoalso hit the Derby jackpot thanks to several of hisstallion sons and grandsons. They have sired RealQuiet, Grindstone and Mine That Bird and there havealso been Triple Crown victories from Victory Gallop,Birdstone, Summer Bird, Red Bullet and Empire Maker. Reassuringly, the inbreeding to Fappiano inAlgorithms= pedigree comes via Quiet American (sire ofReal Quiet) and Cryptoclearance (sire of Victory Gallop). There is also some reassurance to be found in the factthat Algorithms= second dam, Ava Romance, was astakes winner over a mile and a quarter, showing someof the stamina that had brought her sire Avatarvictories in the Belmont S. and San Luis Rey S. Hisdaughters have been represented by more than 1,100runners, yet only one of them--that good filly Elloluv--has so far managed to win a Grade I race in theNorthern Hemisphere. That said, Algorithms has the advantage of being outof Cryptoclearance=s most successful broodmaredaughter. Ava Knowsthecode now ranks among thestrictly limited number of mares with four graded stakeswinners to their credit. Her achievement is all the finerbecause each of the four has a different sire. Perhapsshe already has a fifth graded winner in the pipeline, asher 2010 Bernardini colt sold to John Ferguson for$625,000 last year.

Multiple graded stakes winner Hold Me Back (Giant=sCauseway--Restraint, by Unbridled=s Song) sired hisfirst reported foal Jan. 23 when a chestnut filly wasborn at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. WinStar, which stands Hold Me Back, bred the filly from the A.P.Indy mare All Sevens, a daughter of a stakes-winningsister to Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando.

Sham: Great Was Second Best by Phil DandreaReview by Ian Clayton Phil Dandrea's Sham: Great Was Second Best is animpeccably researched insight into the underratedSham, a horse who courageously battled the legendarySecretariat through the 1973 Triple Crown. Whilemovies and books have been written about Secretariat

and his amazing feats on theracetrack, little has been saidabout the horse some wouldargue pushed him to greatness.Dandrea uses a combination ofintensive research and personalaccounts to make thatargument. The book hits its stride in thedays leading up to theKentucky Derby, with rivaltrainers Pancho Martin andLucien Laurin trading verbalbarbs and the media fanning

the flames of Martin's temper. Dandrea does a great jobof making you feel like you're right there, hearing fromboth sides as they mutter under their respective breathsand aloud to the media. The races unfold vividly as well. In the Derby, Shamstrikes the front in the stretch while missing the twoteeth he knocked out hitting the gate at the start, onlyto be caught by Secretariat in record-breaking time. Thefrustration builds heading into the Preakness, whenSecretariat's owner Penny Tweedy visits Sham and histrainer at their barn before the two square off atPimlico. It's there you can get a sense of Sham'sdemeanor, as he willingly greets his rival=s owner with abrush of his nose. In the Preakness, Sham gets rollingon the lead early, only to have Secretariat make a hugemove on the first turn to join him on the front down thebackstretch. Sham could only chase from there, unableto close the gap as the two run away from the others. There was no avoiding the media frenzy overSecretariat in the days leading up to the final leg of theTriple Crown at Belmont Park. It was as if the race hadalready been run, Secretariat the winner, anunstoppable force. For it was Secretariat staring backat Sham=s trainer, Pancho Martin, from the cover ofTime magazine. Steve Cady is quoted in the book fromthe pages of the New York Times, AIf ever a horsedeserved to have a nervous breakdown, it=s Sham.@Asked to recall Sham=s situation years later, jockeyHeliodoro Gustines felt Sham might have been a bitdown-hearted for the Belmont S. Even the onceboastful Pancho Martin is quoted in the book tellingNewsday, AIf he beats me in the Belmont Stakes onSaturday, then I=ll call him a super horse.@

As Dandrea describes, the gates springing open forthe Belmont, in what would be the duo=s final meeting,I felt myself rooting for Sham as he dueled with his rivalthrough those suicidal opening six furlongs. AsSecretariat began to pull away from Sham down thebackstretch of the Belmont, I could feel thedisappointment both the horse and his team must havefelt. In knowing not only Sham but the players andevents that lead to that final duel, you really get thesense that he was truly a great horse, in the wrongplace at the wrong time. It=s later revealed that, following Secretariat=s death in1989 and Sham=s in 1993, Dr. Thomas Swerczek fromthe University of Kentucky performed a necropsy onboth horses. Dr. Swerczek noted, Secretariat=s heartwas the largest he had ever seen, more than twice thenormal size for a horse. Ironically, according toSwerczek, Sham=s heart was the second-largest he=dever seen. Dandrea does an amazing job throughout the book ofportraying the emotions of the moment. His extensiveresearch and first-hand accounts of this incrediblerivalry allow the story to play out as if it happenedyesterday. I recommend even a casual fan of the sportread this book--the story is not only one of two rivalswho were the best of their generation, but one ofdevotion, determination and ambition. Included in the415 pages is 16 pages of photos as well as anexpansive bibliography and endnotes section--definitelyworth a read for $17.95.
