NEW YORK 17, N. r.

May 15, 1950.

Trustees of the New· York. State Convention 'of Universalists,

C/o Rev. Fred C. Leining,526 Cumberland ·Ave'., Syracuse.

Dear Sirs:-

Mr..Arthur H. Vail, Jr., the broker whohas been working on' the sale of the Church property of theNorth Salem Universalist Society, has just written to merequesting that I submit to you an offer made by Warren B.Lucas to buy the Church land and building for $3,000.Mr. Lucas forwards $300. check on account of the purchaseprice endorsed to the order of the convention,·which Ienclose herewith.

Mr. Lucas intends to convert the building intoa dwelling and as he is to be married shortly, he must havea prompt answer. The offer is therefore limited to June12, 1950. Mr. Lucas is willing to permit the removal of thechurch windows or other memorials by any interested parties.

Mr. Vail advises me that last year' s plan to ·use the .property for a community house cannot be revived;and this sale is due only to the special eff6rts which Mr.Vail has made at the request· of Mr. & Mrs. Frederick T:Nelson, two of the members of the former church.

The Nelsons feel it would be detrimentalto the neighborhood if the Church property were to continueidle and deteriorating,·and.most strongly recommend this sale.

Knowing the· property and all the circumstances,of this situation, I take the liberty of saying that theproposed sale would be clearly desirable to your organizationand to the neighborhood, and repsectfully suggest promptaction by your. body:

Mr. D6nald W. Beebe, TreasurerNew York State Convention of Universalists

373 Argonne DriveKenmore 17, N. Y.

Dear Mr. Beebe:

Dr. Leining wrote me some time ago telling meto write to you whenwe had received.all the articles fromNorth Salem. 'As we, so far, have only been up onee and broughtback 17 pews and. the cammunion set, and have seven more pewsto get as well as the memotial window, I had not written toyOU.

However, I know, that I should have written toreport progress. A few days ago I received a letter fromMr. Vail, agent for the purchaser, telling me that we couldremove the large memorial window as well as some smaller onesand he suggested that it would be well to wait until the titlehad closed.bbfore doing so, as we would not want to remove thewidnows and then find something had blocked the closing andleave the building in a delapitated condition. I wrote toDr. Leining asking when the closing was scheduled for, butas he is away, rhave not yet received the reply.

We plan to go up and bring back the remainingseven pews, the large memoffal window and the two small roundwindows in the, peaks, front and back, of the church. We shallgo as soon as we are advised that the windows have been madeready for shipment and the title has closed. Perhips thereshould -be.some stiDulation'ih the Blo-:Sing -6-overind ouY rightto remove these things after the closing.

I thank you for your letter and shall keep youadvised of any further developments. I shall be out of townOn vacation from August 19th to Sept 2nd.
