Instructional Activity-Curetarrah Witcher

• Title: • Famous Georgians Magnified!• Audience: • Elementary aged students, 2nd graders, adapted lesson for students who are visually impaired.• Purpose: • The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students who are visually impaired to the lives of famous Georgians by

way of music, art work and text (Large Print & Braille). • GPS: Georgia History• Historical Understandings SS2H1:• The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia historya. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove

(founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights).

• Learning Objectives/ Outcomes: • 1. Students should be able to use and identify famous Georgians. (Knowledge).• 2. Students should be able to summarize the text they hear and read (via Braille/ Large Text). (Comprehension).• 3. Students should be able to apply knowledge of famous Georgians by way of connecting sounds with images

and concepts from text. (Applications).• Adaptations: • -Teacher will model closer to students that are visual impaired.• -Place blind student's fingers on text and materials to allow them to feel instruments/objects used in lesson.• -Teacher will use lager print for directions and reading • -Hand out Braille worksheets • -Use textbook on cassettes • Synopsis of overall lesson: • The teacher utilizes magnified pictures, braille, music, artifacts, spoken word (speeches) and other modifications to

introduce students who are visually impaired to Famous Georgians in History.

Lessons Learned: • Dependence and confidence in others' work is crucial• Communication is important in keeping the project flowing• Team synergy helps make the project more cohesive and fun• Encouragement from team members is vital to a successful product

20/20 Vision: • Book adaptations for disabilities are more difficult than one would expect• Principles from the Multi-media class were helpful in developing this project• Much research in finding out about the disability's adaptive needs is required in

order to implement an appropriate adaptation resource for the specific disability• Far better to start earlier as changes take time• On-going dialogue between group members to express their concerns, answer

questions and assist one another is critical• Thanks to everyone for making this project flow smoothly.
