Welcome to the 74th Mid Summer Conference on historic Mackinac Island. This week architects, designers & contractors gather to celebrate the positive impact that the design and construction industries are making in Michigan. This year’s Conference theme is “130 Years of Milestone Events”.

This is the 14th year AIAMI and the AGC of Michigan have partnered on this event. Collaborating with our partners in the built environment is now more important than ever and the conference enables us to network and learn from each other in a relaxed environment. This year’s educational opportunities includes 4 HSW & 2.5 LUs: DMC Children’s Hospital, Troy; Architectural Photojournalism; The Reality of Virtual Reality; Power Plant Case Study and Cottage Tour.

There are many activities for children and youth sponsored by DTE Energy and horseback riding spondered by Professional Concepts Insurance Agency, Inc. Friday Bocci, sponsored by Brick Tech Architectural and IMEG, will be followed by Family Fun Night, including dinner, sponsored by Plante Moran. As usual there is always time to ride a bike, walk, horseback, lay by the pool, read a book on the porch, enjoy live music, eat a Pecan ball, explore Fort Mackinac, play bocci and tennis.

After each day’s activities we will gather for an evening reception. Thursday evening, mingle on the front porch at cocktails. Following cocktails, familys are invited to join us at this years BBQ dinner Pool Party at the Esther Williams Swimming Pool, sponsored by Plante Moran. Friday evening’s cocktail party, sponsored by Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association, will be held in Grand Hotel Tea Garden, where the Bocci Tournament will continue. Adults will gather for games and drinks at the Jockey Club on Friday Night.

Saturday we return to the porch for a reception sponsored by SMACNA Metropolitan Detroit Chapter, enjoy dinner in the hotels dining room, followed by the Afterglow sponsored by Saroki Architecture & Michigan LECET, where you can claim your MAF auction items. The Great Turtle Chapter will bestow the coveted Gold Turtle Award to honor “Hall of Fame” attendees of the Mid Summer Conference.

We look forward to seeing you on the porch of the Grand Hotel.

Art Smith, FAIA, HED, Ron Henry, AIA, DMC,Ron Staley, The Christman CompanyTo differentiate this facility from a typical institutional response, we conceived this Children’s Hospital as an organization of functional, colorful “toy” building blocks, including the integration of colorful rooftop mechanical equipment, to create a multi-dimensional facility with seven colors of glazed brick and six coordinating colors of glass. The materials and colors provide a playful human scale and are highly appealing to the children the building was designed to serve, while creating a memorable image and powerful brand.Sponsor: HED, TRANE Building Advantage1 HSW
