Council staff also tracked down the owner of the remaining dog and returned it to him. ‘‘Our staff go to extraordinary lengths to rehome dogs and euthanasing dogs is a last resort. But the reality is that some dogs, like those eight euthanased, are simply never going to be rehomed because they are dangerous.’’ Mr Dyet says the dogs’ aggressive tendencies had been made worse because they had been caged for an extended period of time. Most could not walk on a lead and a number were outwardly aggressive. He says most of the dogs had to be muzzled before they could be handled. ‘‘We’ve all seen the results of horrific dog attacks, including those on children. ‘‘I’m not prepared to knowingly let aggressive dogs go back into our community and take a punt on public safety. Motocross for Kids success Sunday’s Motocross for Kids was a resounding success. The forwards demolished Cam- bridge up front, supplying a wealth of quality possession for the backs who created overlaps, with slick moves in midfield, to set the wings (Ryan Ballantyne, Manaaki Heta) up beautifully for two first half tries apiece. Joshua Reynolds put the issue beyond doubt when he stole lineout possession with a mighty two- handed take on the 5m line and charged over for his team’s fifth try. Continued page 11.

A YOUR LETTERS

Focus should be on infrastructureFurther to my letter of April

this year the article inThursday’s Courier confirmsmy concerns that the decisionhas already been made, we arehaving a new cultural centrewhether we like it or not.

Note the following:We already have a steering

committee of 27 people, wheredid they come from? And howwere they appointed.

A competition for the designwas portrayed as a local ideasevent, but ‘hey presto’ this wasin fact a competition for some ofthe nation’s heavyweight

architects. I bet they didn’t dothat for free. So this is obvi-ously what the funding retainedin the budget was for.

Apparently 12,000 people peryear visit the museum many ofthem seconded by a school visit— you will have to work hardon convincing me that over a1000 people a month visit themuseum.

Great for the ballet? We can’teven fill a bus for the ballet sohow are we going to fill atheatre.

Reference to the MichaelFowler Centre, the Christ-

church Town Hall, the Auck-land Museum these are citieswith a hundreds of thousands ofratepayers, Auckland has abouta million ratepayers. Te Awa-mutu has — eight thousand.

Te Awamutu is a relativelysmall town and building suchan elaborate monument formillions of dollars is ridiculous, most of us already pay about$2500 per year in rates on ouraverage middle class homes, plus Environment Waikatorates, plus rubbish collection, mortgagee sales are up becausepeople can’t pay their

mortgages, so let’s destroy a fewmore people by making theirrates unaffordable while theyfund something they don’t wantbecause they know we can’tafford it. If they can figure thisout how come the well educatedleaders of our town can’t.

With the local body electionscoming up we must vote forrepresentatives that have amore realistic view of what isgood for the community. Weneed to focus on infrastructureand services, not the ‘WOW’factor.

JOHN KNOWLES

Questions over repairs, maintenanceWOW, that is the only word I have for

the design ‘chosen’ as the new culturalcentre (now called museum and theatrecomplex?).

Having been involved at the WaipaDistrict Council from 1990 to early thisyear and the last 18 months at Council inthe property department as the Councilfacilities officer, I wonder if there has been

any consideration in regards to the main-tenance and cleaning of the proposed‘complex’ complex.

Would it be possible to have somebreakdown of future repairs and mainten-ance costs and how much will be paid bythe ratepayers?

I cannot imagine that the revenue (ifany) generated in the new complex will pay

for all of the costs. Are we looking atanother Events Centre?

I agree that the library needs expandingand wonder how much the costs will be tochange the present museum to allow thelibrary moving in there. Has this beenallowed for in the years to come? Lookingforward to the explanation.

BERNARD WESTERBAAN

Ensuring ratepayers not endangeredViews may differ on where

Environment Waikato shouldspend money, how much moneyand on which biodiversityissue.

While we all agree it’s in ourbest interest to enhance andprotect biodiversity, maintaineffective pest control schemesto control TB and introducedpests ie. possums, stoats, ratsetc and now two newer pestarrivals — koi carp and Canada

Geese — there is only so muchwe can afford.

Views amongst farmers,ACRE members, Fish and Birdand conservationists arediverse.

All have different and, intheir mind, the most pressingitems on their agendas.

While concerns aboutbiodiversity loss is valid, alsovalid is that many in the com-munity are struggling through

a recession. That message was made evi-

dent in 2007 when the RatesControl Team won six seats, inthe process ousting several sit-ting councillors who hadpresided over cumulative rateincreases of 79% in the previ-ous four years.

Our team supports anapproach where Council deter-mines cost-effective measuresthat can achieve the goals for

our region, and ensures that themeasures taken are really whatthe ratepayer wants and iswilling to pay for.

In my role as EnvironmentWaikato Councillor (Hamiltonconstituency) andspokesperson for the region’sRates Control Team, I believethat once that is determined,EW should prioritise and takeaction accordingly.

TV personaility shines atWaipa Youth Awards

ROBIN SWEENEY/TE AWAMUTU COLLEGE PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENTPOPULAR fWhat Now co-host Charlie Panapa addressing theaudience at the Waipa District Youth Awards ceremony.

TE AWAMUTU’S Catherine Peake receives a Multi-achiever Achievement Award from waipa Deputy mayorPeter Lee. She also topped the Leadership category.

Waipa District’s Youth Awardswere given the ‘thumbs up’ bycelebrity guest speaker CharliePanapa — who was returning to hisold school for the annual event.

And he was given a warmwelcome by his hometown and thepeople of Waipa.

Speaking from the stage of TeAwamutu College, hosts for thisyear’s event, Mr Panapa said theawards were a fantastic idea and itwould have been great to havethem when he was a student.

He was in attendance when 39young people from the Waipa dis-trict were acknowledged in anawards ceremony for outstandingachievements in academics, artsand culture, community service, leadership and sport.

Waipa District Deputy MayorPeter Lee and award sponsorspresented recipients with excel-lence, merit or achievementawards in nominated categories.

Benefits of winning a youthaward include improving futureacademic and scholarship oppor-tunities and receiving cash prizesfor Excellence (up to $300) andMerit (up to $200).

Run annually by the WaipaYouth Council, the award which isin its eighth year, is open to youngpeople aged 14 — 18 who reside, orattended school for at least sixmonths in the award year, in theWaipa district.

Nominations for Youth Awardshave nearly doubled since theinaugural Awards in 2003 whichattracted 53 nominations. Thisyear 94 nominations were received.

Mr Panapa, co-host of New Zea-land television’s longest runningand favourite kids show What Now,spoke of the passion he has formusic and entertainment which

lead him on the career path he now enjoys. He says he grew up as an average Maori

boy from Kihikihi, but was given ‘gifts’ alongthe way which helped him on his way.

His first gift was from his mother Marie, who said he should take risks and go out on alimb to make things happen.

The second was from Te Awamutu Collegemusic teacher George Brooks, who inspiredhim to be a musician and singer.

The third gift was from his good friendNick Tuitasi, who told him to always be trueto himself.

Mr Panapa says those gifts have given theopportunity to make great friends, travel, experience new cultures, enjoy performing onthe stage and given him a great career heloves.

He said he is still just an average person, with his faults and bills to pay, but he is also asuccess because he is doing something heloves.

Mr Panapa advised the young people in theaudience to take risks, ask for help and be trueto themselves.

Mr Panapa also treated the audience to asong — and his performance was recorded byWhat Now and may feature on a futureepisode.

Have you seen Hadda?MAF hunting destructive orange beetleBY CATHY ASPLIN

PHOTOS SUPPLIEDHADDA beetle size compared to a ballpoint pen(above) and damage it can cause to foliage (below).

The Hadda Beetle hasmade been making anunwelcome appearancein Auckland this year, but authorities believethe beetle may havearrived in the country asearly as 2006.

The adult beetles are7-10mm in size, areusually an orange colourand have around 26 blackspots on their back.

While the HaddaBeetle has similarities insize and colour, it shouldnot be confused with thecommon lady bird foundthroughout the countrywhich is welcomed ingardens and reserves.

The Hadda Beetlecauses feeding damage tofoliage, especially onpotatoes, tomatoes, aubergines and weedssuch as black night-shade.

The leaf surface isscraped away from the

main leaf vein leavingirregular holes or strips.Heavy feeding damagegive leaves a distinctivelace-like appearance.

Both adults and lar-vae feed on the hostplants unlike most othermembers of the samegroup who are generallypredators.

While mostly found inthe Auckland area, thebeetle can fly up to 800metres. It can also bespread by the movementof plant material or hitchhiking on otherstructures.

MAF thereforebelieves it may also beestablished in otherparts of the country.

If you think you haveseen Hadda Beetles orhave damage on yourplants you think mayhave been caused bythem call MAFBiosecurity New Zealand(free phone on 0800 80 9966).

To Cambridge’s credit, they fought back, scoringa deserved try.

Te Awamutu’stoughest game wasagainst the previouslyunbeaten South WaikatoTritons in the semi-final,winning 12-10 aftertrailing 10-5 with sevenminutes to play.

Toast of that game wascentre Jamon Maru, whonailed a match-winningconversion, from wideout, after Reynolds hadscored.

All the ‘hard yards’ theteam and managementhad put in over the pasttwo months, includingfour warm up gamesagainst other GwynneShield teams, had paid offhandsomely.

A large band of TeAwamutu supportersmade the trek to Hamiltonto cheer them on and theywere not disappointed.

Assistant manager,Vernon Rameka says theteam management wouldlike to publicly thank allthe parents and sup-porters.

‘‘The tournament is sointense, the players needa lot of support to getthem through the weekand we easily had thebiggest crowd at theStadium for the final.’’

BY CATHY ASPLIN

Signage on Liam Carter’s newute ‘lights up’ at night to advertisehis company.

The electrician recentlystarted his own business PhaseElectrical and decided, as heoffers a 24/7 service, to make surehis ute was noticed day and night.

‘‘The reflective signwritingwas essential — AlexandraImages have done a great job,’’ hesays.

Mr Carter has always wantedto run his own business and ispleased to have started PhaseElectrical in his hometown wherehe completed his electrical

apprenticeship to become a quali-fied, registered electrician.

He is experienced in all electri-cal fields, such as new housing, farm maintenance, schools, homeautomation, alterations and audioinstallation, but says he can doany electrical work required. Atthis time of the year much of hiswork is the rural sector, helpingfarmers get dairy sheds ready forthe new season and carrying outmaintenance.

Mr Carter is able to offeradvice and solutions when itcomes to anything electrical, suchas eco friendly lighting ideas.

‘‘During the winter time goodheating is also high on people’spriority lists — I can help provide

Mr Carter is flexible when itcomes to where he goes to carryout work, and what time it is, andprides himself on offering afriendly, reliable and efficientservice.

‘‘Most of my work is in thegreater Waipa area, but I’m happyto travel further if necessary.’’

ASports slaughter2009 champions

TC130710CT07BLOCKBUSTING second five-eighth Mark Murray leaves a path ofdestruction on his way to scoring the first of his two tires for Te AwamutuSports against Morrinsville Sports at Albert Park on Saturday.

Sparkling seven try upset victory

Te Awamutu Sports not onlyhanded Morrinsville Sports their firstloss of the Waikato premier rugbychampionship round, but hammeredthem in the process 41-12.

The seven tries to two rout had notonly the highly vaunted visitorsscratching their heads.

A beaming coach, Martyn Steffertsaid he would have gladly taken a 14-12win at Albert Park on Saturday — ‘‘towin by 29 points is almost unbeliev-able.’’

The top of the table is still congestedwith only Morrinsville and prelimin-ary round winners CBD Hamilton OldBoys having already qualified for thesemi-finals, with one round of matchesto play this weekend.

The other two semi-finals berths arewide open, with four teams still in thehunt.

Ecolab Te Awamutu Sports jumpedfrom sixth to fourth, enhancing theirpoints differential considerably in theprocess.

A win at home over Otorohanga thisweekend would cement a thoroughlydeserving spot in the play offs forSteffert’s rapidly improving team.

Peter Bain reports that it wasevident early in the game that bothsides were keen to move the ballaround in the balmy conditions.

Te Awamutu Sports opened thescoring after five minutes when centreJordan Davies scored out wide afterthe backs had moved the ball at pace tocatch the defence napping.

They didn’t stay in front long asMorrinsville hit back quickly with atry to Jone Lagibola, converted byAndre Wilson to lead 7-5.

The astute captaincy of halfbackLuke Parsons soon had Te Awamutuplaying to one of their strengths thisseason, keeping the ball in the packand driving, mounting plenty of pres-sure on the defence.

The ploy paid off, resulting in twotries. Loosie Cohen Masson was drivenover, followed by hooker Simon Kaydiving over from the base of a maul fora 15-7 scoreline.

Morrinsville stormed back placingthe home team under considerablepressure.

A series of penalties given away byTe Awamutu resulted in the refereerunning out of patience and JonoArmstrong was sent to the ‘sin-bin’.

The visitors cashed in with a try toBrett Harrison to close the gap to 15-12at halftime.

Te Awamutu turned up the heat in

the second spell, using the slightbreeze to kick into the corners.

Almost total dominance in all facetsof play led to four unanswered tries —all peaches of five pointers.

Davies dotted down for his secondfor the day, converted from the side-line by fullback Ryan Meacheam togive his team a 22-12 lead.

Armstrong made up for his earlierindiscretion with a mighty solo effort, breaking from the base of a scrum andracing 30 metres down an unmarkedblindside to score.

Second five-eighth Mark Murrayscored Te Awamutu’s last two tries, smashing his way through severalwould-be-tacklers in an admirableshow of strength for the first handy tothe posts — capping off an outstandingperformance in midfield, both onattack and defence. For his second try,Armstrong again breached the firstline of defence from a scrum fivemetres from Te Awamutu’s goal-lineand linked with the midfield, who sentit along the backline for Murray totake the final pass and scoreunopposed out wide to compete theemphatic victory.

Bain says it was another all roundteam effort with many players stand-ing out.

The ‘man of the match’ went to CarlFinlay, with a strong 80 minute dis-play, winning plenty of turnovers attackles and mauls and carrying theball forward with aggression.

Lock Wade Dickin also stood out, coming in for the injured ChrisMiddleton.

Three players were presented withtheir blazers for playing 30 games forTe Awamutu Sports Senior A team, prop Craig Mora, loosie Cohen Massonand midfield back Josh Harris.

Te Awamutu’s opponent this week-end, OTC Otorohanga, broke their‘duck’ recording their first win in thepenultimate round of the champion-ship, beating Hamilton Marist 24-23.

Hamilton Old Boys thrashed Mel-ville 52-19 and Fraser Tech edged outHautapu 19-12.

Previously unbeaten HaswellCatley Trophy leaders MorrinsvilleSports head the points table with 23,one clear of Hamilton Old Boys, withFraser Tech third on 19 points and TeAwamutu fourth on 17.

After losses last week, HamiltonMarist (15) and Hautapu (13) must nowwin their last games and rely on otherresults to go their way in order to makethe play offs.

TC130710SP15ALIZ PEEHIKURU, pictured with her three nationalgold individual medals in 2008, skipped bothMarist gold medal winning teams at the 2010 NewZealand Power Pulling Championships.

Te Awamutu MaristPower Pulling Club col-lected a brace of gold andsilver medals at the NewZealand Power PullingChampionships.

An ecstatic LizPeehikuru says the clubmembers made the longtrek to Blenheim deter-mined to acquit them-selves well but hadexceeded allexpectations.

‘‘Not only did the clubwin titles, Te AwamutuMarist won recognitionas the most feared oppo-sition on the nationalpower pulling stage.’’

Marist retained theirtitle as the top club in thecountry for the fourthconsecutive year, albeitbeing joint winners of the1903 Labour Day Cup thisyear with their neigh-bouring Kio Kio Sportsclub.

Peehikuru attributedTe Awamutu MaristClub’s success to theirhard work and teambonding in the lead up tothe championships.

The men’s openweightteam caused the biggestupset of the champion-ships, demolishing thefavourites Kio Kio Sportsfor the title.

Marist had expected tobe making up the num-bers, having been ‘brides-maid’ throughout theseason to Kio Kio Sports.

Members of the goldmedal winning teamwere Liz Peehikuru(skip), Lathan Bartley,Bill Greenbank, Chris

‘‘The team are stokedwith the win and hopingto build on the successnext season,’ ’ saysPeehikuru.

Further success wentMarist’s way with clubmember RichardPeehikuru being selectedto anchor the New Zea-land Secondary Schools’representative team.

It is the third yearrunning that he has madethe national schools’

Golf recognition

TC130710SP17BLIFE MEMBERS Margaret Livingstone and BrianMarcroft with their plaques.

Ngahinapouri Golf Club has honoured two of itsmembers, collectively with over 100 years playingmembership, with life membership.

They are Margaret Livingstone and Brian‘Chooky’ Marcroft.

Livingstone has held many administrative posi-tions over the years, including ladies’ vice-captain,captain, secretary, assistant handicapper, and is thecurrent patron.

She was the bronze champion in 1969 and an activemember of the Jubilee committees.

‘‘If Margie sees a job that needs doing she just doesit, no if, buts or maybes,’’ says club scribe, ColinCowan.

Marcroft took up golf when his mother wasconcerned that his rugby injuries would interferewith his milking of the cows. If he gave up rugby, shewould buy him a set of clubs.

In his first season of golf, he was the club juniorchampion and went on to win the Waikato Championof Champions at Te Aroha.

During his time with the club, he too has heldvarious positions, including secretary of theMaungakawa Association, greenkeeper, handicapperand president. He is now the club’s course manager.

In 2004, Marcroft was invited to join the EaglesGolfing Society.

Jane Austen comes to townBY BEN ARNOLD

TC130710SP23PLAYING EMMA: Emma Vlaanderen as Emma Woodhouse with Frank Churchill as Tim Kapoor (left)and Carl Watkins as Mr Knightley.

The days may be get-ting colder but the TeAwamutu Little Theatrehas been warming upsince May for its latestproduction, which getsunderway on Wednesday,July 21 and runs throughto August.

Last year’s winterreboot of the legend ofRobin Hood was well-received by the locals, and this year anotherclassic, Jane Austen’spopular 19th centurynovel Emma, is set toenjoy the same support.

The story of Emma, anincorrigible matchmakerwho finally meets hermatch, enjoyed a coupleof successful filminterpretations in the mid1990s, including star per-formances in the title roleby Kate Beckingsale (iTV)and Gwyneth Paltrow(Miramax).

This latest edition hasbeen adapted for the stageby Louise Dobbs andEmma Vlaanderen, whoused the novel and afore-mentioned film sourcesfor inspiration, alongwith a recent BBC mini-series.

The two local actressesalso feature in the play,

the latter in the lead role, and have been instrumen-tal in bringing the pro-duction to fruition.

Directing Emma isGwendolyn Hart, whoserecent show, Noel Cow-ard’s Blithe Spirit, wasstaged at Te Awamutu’sLight Operatic Society inApril.

Hart moved here fromAustralia and, Dobbssays, her vast amount oftheatre experience hasbeen an invaluable part ofbringing the playtogether.

With sumptuousperiod costumes, musicand manners from abygone era, and Austen’s

inimitable wit, Emmapromises to be a feast forthe eye and a delight tothe ear.

Emma is on at TeAwamutu’s Little Theatrefrom July 21 — 24 and 28— 31 at 7.30pm, and onJuly 25 and August 1 at2pm.

Door sales are avail-

able; for bookings call 8728022. Entry includesrefreshments and there isa group concession.
