Nokia Flexi WCDMA Base Station, Master System Module, Extension System Module, BTS SW version, WN3.3, WN4.0, WN5.0, optical cable, RUIM, ping, FTM (Flexi Transmission Module).

    4. SUMMARY

There have been reported problems during upgrading SW to WN4.0 on the Extension System Module.

If the SW versions on the Master System Module (e.g. WN4.0) and Extension System Module (e.g. WN3.3) are different, there may be situations when connection to Extension System Module will fail and even pinging of the System Module is impossible. This causes unnecessary returns of System Modules to Hardware Services.

    5. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

It is possible to get the SW combination when Master System Module includes WN4.0 SW and Extension System Module includes WN3.3 SW e.g. during capacity extension or changing a broken unit. Connection to the Extension System Module via Master System Module fails and even pinging of the Extension System Module (192.168.255.3) is impossible. Often this leads to change of the Extension System Module HW and unnecessary returns to HWS (Hardware Services) for repair.

  • 6. SOLUTIONS / INSTRUCTIONS

The problem is when Flexi Extension System Module is delivered with WN3.3 SW which is not detected by the Flexi Master System Module with WN4.0 SW.

This issue will be solved in WN4.0 CD3 SW release which will be delivered in April 2009.

If Extension System Module is taking Restarts during SW upgrade and SW WN4.0 CD3 will not be used, for some reason, Flexi Transmission Module should be installed in the Extension System Module during SW upgrade which in most cases will be from WN3.3 to WN4.0. The Transmission Module can later be removed from the Extension System Module.

The following procedure can be used as to upgrade Extension System Module SW to match Master System Module SW (check the SW version!):

Make sure that following IP addresses configured with Laptop:

    o PC IP address: 192.168.255.126 o Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 o Gateway: 192.168.255.129

Disconnect optical cables from the Extension System Module Turn Extension System Module power OFF/ON Connect PC locally to the Extension System Module LMP port Ping to 192.168.255.1 to make sure that connection is ok (remember to

check firewall settings) Start BTS Site Manager and check the Extension System Module SW

level Upgrade the SW (if needed) BTS Site Manager shows Failed to connect to TRS unit in pop up

window. Continue downloading by pressing OK-button.

After the SW upgrade BTS Site Manager connection will be lost because RUIM (Remote User Information Management) will block the connection (see WN4.0 Release documentation/document: Release Note BTS SW WN4.0 DN074961 Issue 1-6 Chapter 9.) BTS Site Manager stays in reset state; however SW upgrade has been done. BTS Site Manager can be stopped running by Windows Task Manager. Connect PC back to Master System Module LMP port and reconnect optical cables. Wait for about 10 15 minutes to get the Extension System Module up and running.

  • 7. NOTE

Do NOT try to upgrade Master System Module directly from WN3.3 to WN5.0 SW level. Connection to the System Module may be lost permanently and Module must be sent to HWS for repair!

Correct upgrade path for Master System Module is: WN3.3 WN4.0 WN5.0. This is because FTM can not be updated directly from WN3.3 to WN5.0. In a case when Master System Module is WN5.0 level and Extension System Module is WN3.3 level Extension System Module can be upgraded directly to WN5.0 level. This has been corrected in WN5.0 SW.

WN5.0 SW needs FTM module to be connected as to get BTS Site Manager connection to the Master System Module.

    PC IP address:192.168.255.126

    Subnet mask:

    255.255.255.0

    Gateway:

    192.168.255.129

Disconnect optical cables from the Extension System Module

Turn Extension System Module power OFF/ON

Connect PC locally to the Extension System Module LMP port

Ping to 192.168.255.1 to make sure that connection is ok (remember to check firewall settings)

Start BTS Site Manager and check the Extension System Module SW level

    Upgrade the SW (if needed)

BTS Site Manager shows Failed to connect to TRS unit in pop up window. Continue downloading by pressing OK-button.

After the SW upgrade BTS Site Manager connection will be lost because RUIM (Remote User Information Management) will block the connection (see WN4.0 Release documentation/document: Release Note BTS SW WN4.0 DN074961 Issue 1-6 Chapter 9.)

BTS Site Manager stays in reset state; however SW upgrade has been done.

BTS Site Manager can be stopped running by Windows Task Manager.

Connect PC back to Master System Module LMP port and reconnect optical cables.

Wait for about 10 15 minutes to get the Extension System Module up and running.

    7. NOTE

Do NOT try to upgrade Master System Module directly from WN3.3 to WN5.0 SW level. Connection to the System Module may be lost permanently and Module must be sent to HWS for repair!

Correct upgrade path for Master System Module is: WN3.3 ( WN4.0 ( WN5.0.
