About this guide

Travelling by busThis guide is designed to help you make the most of the public transport available in and around the South Downs National Park and the South Downs Way National Trail. It does not show every bus route as some are too infrequent, so you may wish to check the specific bus company’s timetable online.

Every route on the network map is shown in the frequency table to give you an idea of how regularly services run.

This information is correct as for May 2013 and the majority of services are likely to stay the same until 2014.

Detailed timetable information should be checked before you go. This can be found via the contact details shown at the back of this guide or by contacting Traveline at www.traveline.info 0871 200 22 33.

A range of bus tickets are available. On most buses you can purchase and use a Day Explorer ticket, including a family version, which will allow you to travel on buses all day long.

Discover a better way to enjoy the viewsThe South Downs National Park is a sensitive landscape and increasingly busy.

Leaving your car at home helps: to reduce congestion and pollution; maintain the rural tranquillity of the National Park; you to visit one of our beautiful country pubs; remove the stress of finding somewhere to park.

Travelling by RailThe South Downs National Park is easily reached by rail from London and the south coast. There are direct trains from London to Eastbourne, Lewes, Hassocks, Pulborough, Amberley, Arundel, Liphook, Liss, Petersfield, Rowlands Castle and Winchester.

Rail is also the easiest way to return from one end of the National Trail to the other via Clapham Junction. If you are planning to travel by rail you could save money by buying a Southern Downlander ticket online before you travel at www.southernrailwaytickets.com/downlander

Bikes on TrainsMost train operators do not allow bikes on trains on any service leaving or arriving at London or Brighton between the times of 6.00am and 10.30am on weekdays. Please check with the train operator or go to www.nationalrail.co.uk
