From the Parochial Today’s Gospel passage reminds us that Christian discipleship demands self-denial, the willingness to suffer, the readiness to follow Jesus by obeying His commandment of love, and generosity in surrendering our lives to God; “to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God” (Romans 12:1). The prophet Jeremiah, in the first reading, is certainly a prototype of the suffering Christ. In the Responsorial Psalm (Ps 65), the Psalmist manifests his deep trust in God, just as Jeremiah himself does. In the second reading, St. Paul advises us: to “offer our bodies as a living sacrifice” to God by explicitly rejecting the ungodly behavior of the world around us and by discerning and doing the will of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus takes His disciples by surprise when, after Peter’s great confession of Faith, Jesus announces that He “must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. After correcting Peter’s objection, Jesus announces the three conditions of Christian discipleship: “Deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me.” Taking up our crosses and following Jesus is not an easy proposition, I bet you - but doing it is a most fulfilling and rewarding way to live in the next life! This week, we are all invited to join our sisters and brothers in the ecumenical family to take part of The Season of Creation - an annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home. It takes place from 1st September - the World Day of Prayer for Creation - to 4th October - the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through repenting, repairing, and rejoicing together. The theme for the 2020 Season of Creation is “Jubilee for the Earth”. ‘This year, the global reach of the novel coronavirus revealed our shared human nature and the inter-connectivity of our economies, political structures, health care systems, food production chains, and energy and transportation systems in devastating ways. Jubilee is a call for people of faith to inspire our imagination and courage to restore right relationships with the Earth and all species.’ This year, amid crises that have shaken our world, we’re awakened to the urgent need to heal our relationships with creation and each other. During the season this year, we enter a time of restoration and hope, a jubilee for our Earth, that requires radically new ways of living with creation. With so much injustice all around us, now is the time for Christians everywhere to come together and show the world how to love each other and creation through ‘self-denial’ as Jesus says in the Gospel. 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time: August 30

That each of us may have the strength and courage to put

Jesus first above worldly ways and material gains. “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world

and forfeit his life?” Matthew 16:26

St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this

stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our

priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

material.

22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Padre Luke Manuel OSH
