Switzerland is not only home to one of Europe’s oldest national parks; nearly
every region also has at least one nature park. Here nature is largely left
to follow its natural course; local people manage the landscape with the
greatest of care, using its resources in a sustainable manner. The new
“Nature travel” programme allows visitors to experience nature in an active
way, tailored to their requirements – while enjoying the region’s gastronomic
highlights. Individual park labels are awarded by the Federal Office for the
Environment (FOEN).

UNESCO, part of the United Nations, places the world’s cultural and natural
sites of outstanding importance under its protection. The entities inscribed
on its World Heritage list all have an exceptional universal value. Several sites
in Switzerland are entitled to use the coveted World Heritage emblem of a
square enclosed within a circle – which, like the term “World Heritage”, is
protected.

Welcome to the “Year of Hiking 2010”! With over
60,000 kilometres of marked trails, Switzerland is
a hiking paradise for everyone. Pleasure walkers who
go for the food, be it a cheese platter at a Swiss
alpine eatery to dessert in a mountain restaurant, or
inspirational hikers who let their thoughts wander as
they enjoy the quiet of nature will not be disappointed.
In the mountains, in the undulating Jura foothills or
in the Schweizer Mittelland, you can enjoy the peace of
nature.
Perfect hiking holidays.
Variety guaranteed.Moors, caves and a sea of alpine plants: the Thunersee-Hohgant Nature
Park. Geology, glaciers and erosion have all left their mark on the mosaic
of habitats here, in which people belong as much as eagles and ibex. A
section of the Way of St. James leads past the St. Beatus caves, while
cheese has long been made in the Justis valley.
The 350-square-kilometre nature park will ensure
that traditions and habitats alike are protected.

Mountain idyll. The traditionally minded Bernese Oberland has enjoyed worldwide fame for
more than a hundred years. Mountain peaks soar high above the valley
floors; wild rivers cascade over the rocks and plunge over dizzy waterfalls,
only coming to rest when they reach Lake Thun or Lake Brienz. In the heart
of this magical mountain world lie charming villages such as Gstaad,
Meiringen and Lenk. For the romantic at heart, they can also be reached by
train. Even if you are visiting for the first time, you are sure to feel instantly
at home in the Bernese Oberland.

Enchanted by the sun. Locals speak of “three suns” that nurture the terraced vineyards of Lavaux:
the bright, life-giving sun in the sky; the rays reflected off Lake Geneva;
and the warmth stored in the stone terrace walls. All three help mature the
grapes of Switzerland’s most fascinating wine-growing area. The region
is a treat for the eyes, too: Lavaux is postcard-
pretty – as well as a UNESCO World Heritage
site, and a paradise for cyclists.

all close to one another. There is the Jura, with its vast meadows, traditional

buzzing cities on the lake. The countryside is known for its leisurely hikes,

Lucerne.Lake Lucerne.
In the heart of Switzerland.Lucerne, you could say, is the essence of Switzerland: The city. The lake. The
mountains. From the shores of Lake Lucerne, legendary railways and cable
cars lead up to some of the most beautiful viewpoints and mountain peaks:
the Rigi, for example, “Queen of the Mountains”; the permanent snow on
the Titlis; and the Pilatus, via the world’s steepest cog railway. The lake-
shores are fascinating too: here, the Swiss hero William Tell is said to have
fought for freedom, while on Rütli meadow in 1291, the Swiss Confederation
was founded.

sea a hundred metres deep. When the sea receded, it left behind
archaic landscapes and beautifully preserved fossils, including
80 species of fish and 30 species of marine and land reptiles. Walkers
on the hiking trail around the Monte San
Giorgio, now a UNESCO World Heritage, can

Soaking up the sun.Ticino occupies the southernmost corner of Switzerland. Here, people speak
Italian, eat well and enthusiastically embrace the sunny side of life. “In
summer it’s so magical here,” say the old Ticinesi, “that at night the stars
move closer together, so that they all find room above paradise.” And this
paradise is exceptionally varied: with its lakes and romantic shores, its
charming towns full of boutiques and music, and its unspoilt valleys, blanket-
ed in forests of sweet chestnut and laced with beautiful long footpaths.

Ancient forces in the Pfyn forest.Between Leuk and Sierre, the Rhone flows past the largest pine forest in
Switzerland. A landslide after the last Ice Age and a vast mudflow cone

and the Turtmann valley. Cows graze on the lush
alpine pastures in summer, and walkers can

A study in stone. The GeoPark between Elm and Lake Walen covers an area of 300 square
kilometres and is so exciting that part of it has made it onto the list of
UNESCO World Heritage sites. In the “Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona”,
rock that is 250 million years old has pushed its way over much “younger”
strata with no more than 35 million years to their
name. The resulting natural rock formation with
its knife-like serrations and the famous Martins-
loch rock hole can be seen for miles around.

woodpeckers and bats, the squirrels and dormice, the frogs, mushrooms
and algae. The Sihlwald is returning to a natural
wilderness – and Zürich is gaining a secret

picturesque villages, thrilling bike and hiking trails and a host of excursion

Summer of action. In Switzerland it’s easy getting the young ones up and about. They’ll follow
the trail of dwarfs and witches on secret paths; learn to bake bread and
milk cows at fairytale hotels; splash about in crystal clear lakes and rivers;
and find high thrills in the adventure-filled activity parks – without risk.
Switzerland is a big playground for people of all
ages; as the world becomes more artificial,
holidays here remain authentic and natural.42
