There is no readily apparent area; of waste matching this description or a samplirig locationmarker; .A base rnap was obtairied from Westori but the scale did ript appear to match the field observations, arid it was impossible; to determine the location of sample S13, collected and reported by Weston. Therefore, Warzyn is unable tb take actiop with respect tp this area.

The last prpgress report iridicated some concerns regarding access tp the site, which is via Zeke's Auto yard. There is spme concern regarding limits on our wbrking hours and a possibility that the access road may be closed after August ;1991. At present, we dor have iaccess to the site during Zeke's business hours. odor. Undersoil: Grey, soft, moist, silty, clay-like material with oily odor.

Bedrock appears to be generally less that three ft below the surface.

Cover material: Sparse to none. Waste is exposed at the surface.

EPA will reportedly send a representative from Weston who was part of the original EPA Site evaluation team, to identify the location of sample S13.

Waste Thickness: 0.5 ft to greater than 2.5 ft (in two spots), generally 1 to 1.5 ft thick.

Waste Description: Black tar-like layer, firm at surface, softer at depth. Undersoil: Grey stiff, clay-like material with oily odor. Cover material: Waste is generally present at the surface although it appears to

have been covered by the berm in some areas.

Total Area: Approximately 15 ft by 15 ft surrounding the hand auger at coordinates South 112, West 928 (see map).

Waste Thickness: Approximately 0.2 ft

Waste Description: Black tar-like material, firm at the surface, softer below the surface.

Potentially Impacted Soils: Grey, moist, clay-like material with oily odor. Potentially

impacted soil is 2 ft thick or greater over the area. The area is approximately 150 ft by 25-60 ft, in the drainage way of openings in berms in Area G.

Cover material: Topsoil with grass, shrubs, and trees covers 95% of the area.

The small waste area is sparsely covered with grass.


Delineation: Three auger probes to further refine estimate of areal extent of waste.

35 ft by 35 ft. Waste was encountered in only one location (250 south, 952 west, see map), and waste was not observed at the surrounding hand auger locations approximately 35 ft away. 0.5 to 1 ft. Black, soft, oily material with oily odor.

Grey, moist, clay-like material with oily odor. Approximate area is 40 ft by 70 ft. Brown organic clay with plants and trees covers the entire area.

Auger probes to refine estimate of areal extent of waste. Total area is some smaller area within the 35 ft by 35 ft area (above).

One soil sample from three locations on the perimeter of the area to verify the field-determined extent of contamination.

Why is there is a large overall reduction in the number of perimeter samples as compared to the number proposed in the Work Plan (WP).

What does sampling for treatability encompass?

It would be very helpful to have maps such as those depicted in Figures A7 and A9 in the WP to understand the proposed sampling changes.

Please explain what is depicted by the "Proposed Soil Boring Map". The number of samples doesn't agree with the number of samples in Table 2.

Concerning Area B, on the Warzyn map it seems to be far south of __where it is on the Weston map, despite the Weston map's not being

f to scale.

There should be at least one sample of soil to a depth which is greater than that sampled through hand augering in Area B, since this was a pit area "clean" material could have filled in the upper layers of the pit.

Concerning Area E, in the narrative it is stated that one soil sample will be analyzed for characterization. Along with this sample, should waste be present, a sample for treatability should also be taken.

Concerning Area H, why is there such a large difference in areas cited in the Total Area and the area of Potentially Impacted Soils? On the Warzyn maps Area H seems to be much smaller than

—that depicted in the Weston maps. Allowing for the Weston maps not being to scale, the two maps still seem to be out of agreement.
