“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,

and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:29-30

Come, Take, and Rest There’s a very similar line in today’s Gospel: … and I will give you rest. Who among us does not, in some way or another, long for rest? It may be physical rest from hard work, family life, or even illness; rest from the worries and the fears we all have from time to time; or

rest simply from the burden of being who we are, with all our faults and failings and shortcomings – the burden of being ourselves. So, these words of Jesus really seem to be meant for us. We qualify both because we long for rest and because we feel overwhelmed. Well, let’s look closer into these words and understand them a little better. COME to me …. Oftentimes we don’t seem to be going anywhere. There is no task more difficult than the one which seems to have no point; no suffering more difficult to bear than the one which has no meaning; no life more difficult to live than one which has no direction. When Jesus asks us to come to him, he offers us the ultimate meaning for our lives and at once so much pain disappears and we find a certain peace. We notice that Jesus does not say: Look at me, think about me, talk about me, fantasize or read about me but – COME to me …. We must follow Abraham. We must leave behind all that prevents us from moving and submitting ourselves to Him – following Him into a land that He will give us. At the moment, we decide to come to Jesus we notice how far we are from Him. We experience the joy of making progress. That is always part of the human condition; He gives us strength to commit ourselves to the journey. Jesus says: Come to ME …. Coming to Jesus is coming to a Person. It is not coming to trust Church doctrine, nor is it a list of religious practices such as the Pharisees engaged. We must be sure that it is to the person of Jesus that we are coming because no one else can give us the rest we desire. Come to me all you who labor and are OVERBURDENED …. Jesus had told Saint Paul that His grace would be enough and yet here Jesus implies that there are some of us who are OVER-burdened. How did we get that way? Have we chosen to burden ourselves with cares and worries that are unimportant? When we load our own backs with burdens, we overload ourselves, and because they are not Christ’s burdens we are unable to rest. Each of us must honestly ask which of the burdens do I create for myself? Jesus is saying to us: … Yes, MY yoke is easy and MY burden light.

Then Jesus says: SHOULDER my joke ….

Not only must we carry the burden Jesus asks of us, we must learn from him how to carry it. SHOULDER my yoke… How often do we drag our burdens behind us?

We all have burdens but the yoke of Jesus is one worth carrying. Jesus suffered the loneliness, the rejection and the persecution of living his human life in faithfulness to the will of God. This is the yoke we are called to share with him – the burden he asks us is to be faithful to the Father.

Shoulder my yoke AND LEARN FROM ME ….

Today we have come to the school where Jesus teaches what it means to carry His yoke; to forgive those who accuse us, to love those who hate us, to be patient with those who annoy us, to go to the assistance of those who need us, to give our very lives for love of others. Jesus shows us how to do this by showing us how He did it. He takes bread and wine and says: This is my Body and Blood – this is me – given for you. Come… Take … and Rest.

Ven, Toma Y Descansa

Hay una línea muy similar en el Evangelio de hoy: ... y yo le daré alivio.

¿Quién de nosotros, de alguna manera u otra, no desea descansar? Puede ser un descanso físico del trabajo duro, vida familiar, o incluso enfermedad; Descansar de las preocupaciones y los temores que

todos tenemos de vez en cuando; O descansar simplemente de la carga de ser quien somos, con todas nuestras faltas, caídas y defectos - la carga de ser nosotros mismos.

Por lo tanto, estas palabras de Jesús realmente parecen estar destinadas para nosotros.

Calificamos para ellas porque deseamos descansar y porque nos sentimos abrumados. Bueno, miremos más de cerca estas palabras y entendámoslas un poco mejor.

VEN a mi …

A menudo no parece que vayamos a ninguna parte. No hay tarea más difícil que la que parece no tener sentido; Ningún sufrimiento más difícil de soportar que el que no tiene significado; No hay vida más

difícil de vivir que una que no tiene dirección. Cuando Jesús nos pide que vayamos a él, él nos ofrece el significado último de nuestras vidas y al

mismo tiempo desaparece tanto dolor y encontramos cierta paz.

Nos damos cuenta de que Jesús no dice: Mírame, piensa en mí, habla de mí, fantasea o lee sobre mí, sino - VEN a mí ...

Debemos seguir a Abraham. Debemos dejar atrás todo lo que nos impide movernos y someternos a Él - siguiéndolo a una tierra que Él nos dará. Al momento que decidimos venir a Jesús, notamos lo lejos

que estamos de Él. Experimentamos la alegría de progresar. Eso siempre es parte de la condición humana; Nos da fuerzas para comprometernos en el viaje.

Jesús dice: Ven a MI ....

Ir a Jesús es ir a una Persona. No es ir a confiar en la doctrina de la Iglesia, ni es una lista de prácticas religiosas como las de los fariseos comprometidos. Debemos estar seguros de que es a la persona de

Jesús que venimos porque nadie más puede darnos el descanso que deseamos.

Ven a mí todos los que están fatigados y agobiados…

Jesús le había dicho a San Pablo que Su gracia sería suficiente y, sin embargo, aquí Jesús implica que hay algunos de nosotros que estamos agobiados. ¿Cómo terminamos de esa manera? ¿Hemos

escogido estar agobiados por cuidados y preocupaciones que no son importantes? Cuando llenamos nuestras propias espaldas con cargas, nos sobrecargamos, y porque no son cargas de Cristo somos

incapaces de descansar. Cada uno de nosotros debe honestamente preguntarse ¿cuál de las cargas he creado para mí? Jesús nos está diciendo: .... Sí, MI yugo es fácil y MI carga ligera.

Entonces Jesús dice: TOMEN mi yugo ....

No sólo debemos llevar la carga que Jesús nos pide, sino aprender de él cómo llevarla. TOMEN mi yugo ... ¿Cuántas veces arrastramos nuestras cargas detrás de nosotros?

Todos tenemos cargas, pero el yugo de Jesús es digno de ser llevado. Jesús sufrió la soledad, el rechazo y la persecución de vivir su vida humana en fidelidad a la voluntad de Dios. Este es el yugo que estamos

llamados a compartir con él: la carga que nos él pide es ser fieles al Padre.

Carguen mi yugo Y APRENDE DE MÍ ....

Hoy hemos venido a la escuela donde Jesús nos enseña lo que significa llevar su yugo; A perdonar a los que nos acusan, amar a los que nos odian, a ser pacientes con los que nos molestan, a ir en ayuda de

los que nos necesitan, a dar nuestra vida por amor a los demás. Jesús nos muestra cómo hacerlo mostrándonos cómo Él lo hizo. Él toma pan y vino y dice: Este es mi Cuerpo y Sangre - este soy yo –

entregado por ustedes. Ven ... Toma ... y Descansa.

St. Catharine Academy’s Higher Achievement Program (HAP) for 7th and 8th grade
