'1~a.I/I,JJce.f4d-e",ca.' ?:'~"Me 117~~ EFFECT. Anyone from youraudience is asked to call home by telephone (or anyone, anywherein the world!) and ask anyone to give a number between 50 and 100.

A second person in the audience is asked to secretly write downa number between 50 and 100. These two numbers are then secretlyadded and the total is used to turn to a page in a book and thefirst sentence is noted.

The psychic, without approaching anyone, tells it all! He tellsthe number chosen via the telephone, the number chosen by theperson in the audience and the page of the book and the contentsof the first sentence. Everything can be left with the audience!

The effect is uncanny and leaves a profound impression on youraudience. It is a one-man-effect. To produce it you must have anddo the following.

1. A novel. Any novel which may be furnished by the host. Youmust handle the novel before the show and memorize the first sentence on page 14 (for this method).

2. You must have a clean way of forcing a number. The book,"The Damned Thing," forces the number 86. (If you do not havethis book, an alternative method will be given later.)

So let's assume that you do have this book (or any other bookthat forces a number between 50 and 100) and that you are goingto force the number 86 (100 minus 86 equals 14, the page number!)

J. You will need paper pads and pencils.4. Prepare beforehand a prediction sealed in an envelope, pre

dicting the choice of a phrase from the first sentence on page14 of the novel held by the host.

SHOwrIMEa "Ladies and Gentlemen. I am going to attempt abizarre test! WE must call someone by telephone. Is there anyonehere who can reach anyone at home by telephone? Or anyone anywherein the world for that matter!"

Someone, a lady, volunteers to call her daughter, for example."Please tell your daughter to give you a two-digit number. Saybetween 50 and 100."

While the lady leaves the room to make the phone call, you passout the prediction envelope and also force the number 86 on anotherperson, telling that person to keep his choice secret. Give thisperson a paper pad to write down his number. He writes 86. Butkeep in mind that he and the rest of the audience assume that you

DO NOT KNOW THE NUMBER.When the lady returns you tell her to whisper the secret number

to the person that chose the first number, 86. This person is instructed to write down the second number. say. it was 54. under thefirst number and to add them together.

You also instruct the lady that made the phone call to alsowhisper that number to the host that is holding the novel. Askthe host to also write down the 'telephone' chosen number on• paper pad that you furnished him. He writes down 54. You donot know this number, of course.

Next ask the person that added up the two numbers to calloutthe last two digits of the new number. He will callout 401

You tell the host to subtract 40 from his number. At the same time you can point to the lady that made the phone

call and say, "The number you received over the telephone was 54!Correct? (of course. All you did was to add 14 to 40 to get hernumber!). (You also tell the second number of 861)

In the meantime the host subtracts 40 from 54 and gets 141tell the host to open the book to page 14 and to read off the firstsentence. Then have your prediction read. End of Miracle.

Try the above in your next show. It is a brain buster but mostimportant, it convinces your audience that you are psychicl

NOTES. The effect can also be presented as thought readingby telling the host to please concentrate on the line of print!

If you do not own the book 'The Damned Thing,' then you canresort to 'The Bold Approach' by flipping the pages of any bookand telling the person to stop you anywhere. Wherever you arestopped, you callout the force number! and close the book.If you use short pages so that the page, say #86 can be forcedthen tell the person to look at the left hand page and to keepit secret, You do not want to see the number, you say.

Any other force number between 50 and 100 can be used. Butyou must secretly subtract the force number from 100 to arriveat the force page in the book. If your force number is 63, thenthe force page is 37, etc.

Do not pass up this effect. It is a killer. It will dumbfoundeveryone in your audience since they will assume that you did notknow any of the numbers and yet you perceived it all through somestrange power. The use of the telephone adds a deep mystery tothe presentation.

NOTE. If you wish to work with highe~ numbers then you musthave a way (a clean one please) of fo~cing say, 175. To get theforce page, subtract 175 from 300 which will give you page 125.

The number gotten over the telephone must be between 150 and200. Example.

Force number - 175Telephone number - +lJ~4

Total

-74 last two numbers - 74125 - page number

NOTE. Your force number must alsq be between 150 and 200.

~ei"d 'P1("i!J~eA.'f"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am going to

write a 6-digit number on this card and 14 ~6have one of you sign the card. I am also /' 0going to show the numbers to one of youin the audience. Please remember that Iam writing these numbers before anythingelse is done."

The Mental Marvel then clips the card on a dog-clip as shownin Fig. 1, and calls on one person to come forward and hold onto the clip and card during the demonstration that follows.

"Please hold on to this card. Do not show it to anyone anddo not remove it from the clip. I do not want someone to say thatyou did something funny. Just hold the clip in full view. Thankyou. "

You then proceed to do exactly as in the above effect, "Transcendental Phone Test!" You have someone call anyone in the worldto give a 2-digit number between 50 and 100. Force the number 86on a second person, etc. As soon as the second person calls outthe last two digits of his answer, you will know the 2-digits gottenover the phone. So while the host is subtracting the two digitsfrom the 'phone' number, you take back the dog clip, remove thecard and fill in the last two digits with a swami gimmick!

Show your number on the card and dumbfound everyone and thenleave the card behind as a souvenirl

If you do not think that is brain-crippler, try it once.Everyone in your audience assumes that you did write 6 digits

when in reality you only wrote fourl

AN AL MANN EXCLUSIVE•

NOTEI Remember that in order to get the 'phone' number you mustadd the number called by the second person to the page number,40 plus 14, for example to get 54, the number gotten over thephone.

Also remember that you must ask the second person to giveyou the last two digits of his answer, the center digit firstand then the last digit, otherwise he may give it to you in reverse.

14tl1 '7tte 9ou~t4 fJ,·Mf,UAi,t1f/l,.· In the above effects, the first four digits are constant, the 14 and the 86 which areforce numbers. With this you can perform miracles without end.And bear in mind that your audience assumes that you do not knowany of them. Here is another fabulous routine with this knowledge.

Write out three numbers as predictions on three business cards, sealed them in envelopes and pass them out into the audience. Onone card write "14" and pass it out to someone in·the extreme rightside of your audience. Write a second card with "86" and pass thatout to someone in the center of the audience. Then write "14" againand pass it out to someone in the extreme left side.

Then go through the routine of calling someone over the phone, etc. Then after the numbers are forced, take back the threecards. If sealed, open the envelopes and show each person what hewas holding. Then you come to the front of the audience andsay, "Here is what I wrote down at the beginning. I wrote downthe number "14", the number "86" and (here you fake it) the number"54!" You have of course learned the last number after hearingthe second person callout his last two digits!

Needless to say, all will be amazed and none the wiserlNOTE. This routine is so convincing that you can actually allow

the person to see what you wrote ahead of time and to even showit to persons near him, or her. And still, none will be the wiserl

~Ji,a.ut 7~~~t.&: Using the above 6 digits as an example,~ test can be done with the huge dictionaries that are found inalmost any home and office, like the Unabridged Edition of TheRandom House Dictionary. This book contains over 2000 pages.

To many observers, the bigger the book the bigger the miraclesince they assume that they could have picked any word in thegiant tome. .

The first four digits, 1486 are used for the page. And S1ncethese are force numbers p you already know the page and can discribe the contents, saying, "I see a map on the lower left handcorner!" etc. The last two digits which can be any two di-gits from 50 to 100 are used to designate the word. The firstdigit is used for the word on the column and the last digit is

Page 6: 7etlttJue - Emperybooks...it secret, You do not want to see the number, you say. Any other force number between 50 and 100 can be used. But you must secretly subtract the force number

used for the word on the line, the definition. In this fashion, your prompter list is very short. You only have to list .5 words, from the .5th to the ninth word, plus nine words of each definition!

You can of course also predict the first word and the last wordof the page.

'1h.e -z>~ (')~ ~e 9a,C~tJ.e: You offer to attempt a testof MENTAl Television over the telephone! Most difficult you say.You can not guarantee any results since the person on the otherend of the line may be anywhere in the world.

So, secretly you write down the word 'chair' three times onthree business cards and pass them out into the audience. One cardto the far left, another in the center and the other to the farright of the audience. You may read them, you say, but please donot let them out of your hands.

(This test should be done only when there is a telephone inthe same room as the show.)

Have someone call anyone over the phone explaining that anESP show is in progress. After the salutations, you take thephone and tell the person on the other end to callout any wordin the English language, a short word. "Please repeat the wordto your daughter." You say as you hand the phone to the daughteror whomever. In the meantime you write down the word on a chalk-board. Take the phone again and say, "Please look around theroom you are in and name a piece of furniture.

If the person says chair, you say "Fine." and write down 'chair'on the chalkboard. If the person calls out anything else, writedown 'chair' anyway.

Now you say, "Tell your daughter the name of any city in theworld." Give the phone to the daughter and ask the daughter whather mother (or is it father) said and write the name of the citygiven on the chalkboard and tell the daughter to say goodbYe

Do not show the chalkboard yet but go into the audience andcollect the three business cards and return to the front and say,

"Ladies and Gentlemen, before our bizarre experiment with thetelephone started, I wrote sown three different words on thesethree business cards and passed them out for you to see them. Thepersons on the front already read the cards. For the benefit ofthe rest of the audience, let me read them to you. I wrote thewords 'Love' (or whatever the first word was), 'chair' and 'St.Louis." You are of course faking the readings.

Then pick up the chalk board and show it saying, "And here iswhat the lady gave us over the phone!" Finis.

A profound silence should permeate the room as you plunge intoyour next miracle.

Do thank and dismiss your assistant who will be as puzzled asthe rest .

lI~1ttl«cePHONE-VOYANCE is the

technical name given by psychic investigators to the faculty of clairvoyance over a telephone.

As one would expect, the phenomena surfaced shortly after the invention of the telephone. Sincethen, magicians, seers and mindreaders have created sensationalheadlines with it.

BELLI The first magician tocreaie-a miracle over the telephonewas, of course, Alexander GrahamBell, its inventor. Bell was thefirst person to convey his voiceover an experimental telephone inhis laboratory in Boston in June2, 1875. A patent was issued in March 7, 1876. His voice was thefirst again in a one-way line from Brantford to Paris Ontario in1876 p and from New York to Chicago in 1892 and finally from NYCto San Francisco in 1915 when the transcontinental line was finished!

HILLIARD I To our knowledge, John Northern Hilliard, the authorof Greater-Magic p was the first to do a magic-mindreading stuntover the phone. He was doing it in 1900! and kept it a deep secretfor five years until he released it in the pages of the Sphinx inthe February, 1905 issue, Vol. III no. 12. Apparently, Hilliardwas the only magician doing the stunt before 1905!

The original article that appeared in the Sphinx, 'TwentiethCentury Telepathy' is so well written that it is included herefor the sake of the reader. It is shown in Fig. J on the next page.

Hilliard made a miracle out of it and please note that he saidthat the stunt is of little value unless you present it as thereal thing! The presentation of a mental stunt is what separatesthe boys from the girls (or is it the other way around?).

Hilliardvs method necessitates a vmedium' on the other end ofthe line (wife, sweetheart, partner), making it a two person presentation or code act. Yet the effect is awesome.

Magicians have done well with this principle culminating oneffects where the vmedium' tells you the color of your tie, eyes, dress, hair, etc., etc. (see Bob Mason's Mental Miracle).

Magicians next decided to do away with the 'medium v by simplydoing a clever card trick over the telephone with the subjectVsown cards. A tall order no less. This culminated in Richard Himbe r t s "No Questions Asked."

TURVEY. A noted English Seer, VincentN. Turvey, was credited with discovering Phone-Voyancein 1905! This wasconsidered a specialform of clairvoyance referred to aspsychic television.

There is littledoubt in my mindthat Mr. Turvey,an avid reader, gothis idea from reading Hilliard's article in the Feb.1905 Sphinx. If notthen the coincidentewas indeed remarkable.

Nevertheless,Turvey has the unique distinction ofbeing the firstperson doing miracles over the telephone without theneed of a deck ofcardsl

He was also thefirst to do coldand psychometricreadings over thephone! He did italone as a one-person act!

And he did remarkably well. He could tell the person on theother end of the line things which the person did not know, liketelling him what his daughters were doing in an upstairs room, andtelling him what another person in the room was reading (the booktest). Doing cold readings over the phone is easier and more awesome than in the office. Yours truly has done it! and all Icould hear over the phone was Oohs! and Ahs! as I read Dante'sLife Span Reading! The lady, a total stranger was many miles away!

A seer in Long Island, N.Y. is doing that today (1983). Shecharges $100 per and is booked solid.

THE ZOMAHS. In 1910 and 1911, The Zomahs (Mr. and Mrs. A.T.Giddlngs~created a sensation in the Alhambra Theatre in London. The Zomahs were a two-person mindreading team using a code.

Mrs. Zomah challenged the press to test her powers. She said

she could read her husband's mind even if he was miles away fromher. So a test was arranged. Mrs. Zomah would remain in the officeof the Daily Mirror while Mr. Zomah stood on the stage of the Alhambra surrounded by the picked committee of newspaper reporters andothers. Articles would then be handed to Mr. Zomah which hewould hold in his hand. Mrs. Zomah would then read his thoughtsand then call the theatre by phone and say what it was that hewas holding. No! Mr. Zomah would not touch the phone. He wouldbe far away from it. The phone was held by one of the reporterswho would then repeat what Mrs. Zomah said!

As expected the unprecedented eXhibition caused wonderment. The newspaper said that Mrs. Zomah could actually see what her

husband was holding in his hand as she could describe the articleminutely. She could tell the value and date of a coin, for example.

The method used by the Zomahs was childsplay! But it wasn't themethod that baffled the world. It was 'theatre' - showmanship plusyears of experience before the public plus the hidden power ofthe words with which the phenomenon was described.

Whereas the newspapers reported that the members of the committeegave different articles to Mr. Zomah to hold in his hand p whatactually happened was a bit different.

Mr. Zomah instructed the reporters and committee persons totake things out of their pockets and to hold them in their hands.Mr. Zomah would then come around and pick things out, BUT in aknown order! likel Pen, Handkerchief, eyeglasses, etc.

Unkown to the committee, the Zomahs did use a code. For givingthe date on a coin, Mr. Zomah would say, "Ask my wife if she cantell us anything else about this coin?" The reporter would thensay, "Mrs. Zomah, can you tells us something else about the coin?"

That was a code that could be worded in many ways, vi.e . , "TellMrs. Zomah to give us the date." etc.

Bear in mind that the Zomahs had many years of experience withcodes. The order of the articles picked by Mr. Zomah could bechanged several times!

For a solution we must assume that Turvey knew the book beingused and that he had a way of forcing the page number. Anothermethod would be for the reading spectator to be a confederate.

To duplicate this miracle today, barring the use of a stoogeand the need to visit beforehand the spectator's home, we canproceed thusly, What book can be found for certain in thespe etator , s home that can also be f'ound in your home? The telephone directory of course. Also the daily newspaper.

Telling a person over the telephone what he is reading in theWall Street Journal or thhe hometown newspaper is an impressive testthat has already been treaated in 'Six Coulmns. '

Here we will deal withl the telephone directory. We will alsouse, in a disguised fashi(on, the number-juggling formula that isused in The Transcendenta:a.l Book Test. (This formula appeared inHeath's 'Math-E-Magic' pa~ge 17, called Arithmatical Whoopee).

T~ PRESENTATIONa (Pleaase note that in the beginning you knownoth1ng. All the numbers nmust be gotten from the listening personon the other end of the teelephonel)

You call the person, onr- friend, and say, "John, let's try atest of clairvoyance over' the telephone. This is a very rare testand I want to attempt it. I Tell your son to get the telephone di~ectory and to sit about 110 feet away from you. By the way what1ssue of the telephone direc1;bry are-yuou using? July 1983? Good."

(NOTEa You must have a copy of the ssame directory, AND if youare a working Mentalist you should hav.ve copies of·several telephonedirectories from past years. Many perrsons keep the old directoriesfor reason's of convenience as they, have annotated the pages.)

"Tell your son to open the bo osk to any page between 350 and400, and to keep it a secret. I "do not want you to know what pageis used." (NOTEa I am usi.ng; the Freehold, N.J. telephone bookwhich has about 500 pages in t~he white section, so I will usea page between 350 and 400 whnich is about the center of the book.If you are using a thicker -book then you may use any sectionbut the page must always b~ between -50 and -100. This is the'eame as telling the person to choose a number between 50 and 100.For our purpose the first ~igit of the three will not matter.)Assume that the son writes" page 381.

"Please remember John, tthat the page chosen is not known, noteven by you and that your s~on has a wide choice. There are manynames on the page and now ~e are going to choose a column and aname, So ·please take a pape~""...au.O F-e_ncil and write down a twodigit number between 50 and 100." Aasumer that John writes down54.

"Give some paper and pencil to your som and tell him to writedown the page number. When he does that T will get a vibrationfrom it."

"Now tell your son to add the number you have chosen to hispage number." Son adds 54 to 381 and gets 435.

"Now tell your son to give you the center digit of his answerand also the last digit. Subtract these two digits from yournumber. Like if he gives you a 1 and a 3, subtract 13 from yournumber." "Now we are going to use these two new numbersfrom your answer for the column and name. What was the first digit of your new answer? 1? Great! Use that for the column. And

belive it or not, John, I am doing the same thing with a phonedirectory I am holding in my hand. I am pointing to the firstcoulmn. But of course, I do not know the page number. Now! whatis the second digit of your answer. We will use that to countdown to the name. Nine? Good. Tell your son to count down to theninth name on the first column."

NOTE. John has subtracted 35 from his number, 54 to get 19119 is used for the column and name positions. BUT you have subtracted 19 from 100 to get 81 and you have placed a 3 in frontof 81 to get page 381 and you have quickly turned to that pageand divinved the name I

THE FINE POINTS. John will not hesitate to give you the 19number, since he knows you do not know the page number and knowing the '19' means nothing. He does not know the page number either!

But since the father and son are about 10 feet apart, they maycallout "the numbers and if you hear the numbers, write themdown then you will not have to ask him for them.

It is very doubtful if anyone can connect the 19 to 381, whichis the secret of the effect.

You can give the person a free choice of any page, apparently,in the telephone directory by saying, "You have a free choice ofany page in the book. What section of the book do you wish to workwith? In the 100's, 200's, 300's -- etc." "300's? Fine. Tellyour son to choose a page between 350 and 400. He has a free choice!"And what ever you do, do not tell me the page."

The Telephone directory must have at least four columns on eachpage.

is a good example of how thecreate miracles by using thein words.

'Warlock' tells you what wordup in a dictionary. The idea

is from Prince Thebb.

Prince Thebb calling long d i s tance r "Al, let's try that telephone clairvoyance thing I told you about. Do you have a dictionaryhandy?" "Yes." I said, as I reached for the Lexicon Pheno-mena dictionary. (Prince Thebb had made sure by a previous callthat I would be using that dictionary!)

"What dictionary is it?" "It is the L.P. dictionary!""Good': Now listen carefully. Pinch the telephone between your

shoulder and your ear so that your two hands are free and so thatyou can hear me, and place the dictionary so that the spine restsin your left palm and open the dictionary with your right hand.Have you done that? Fine! You opened the dictionary to the wordsthat begin with the letter 'M.' Is that correct?"

"Yes!" I said. (Notes If a person holds the telephone by pinching it between the shoulder and the ear, his two arms are not asfree to move as one may imagine. Actually your left arm can notbe moved freely otherwise you will drop the telephone. So whenthe dictionary is placed into the palm of the left hand and it isopened with the right hand, the person will follow the line ofleast resistance and open the dictionary about the middle wherethe 'M' words are. But if any other section is opened top it doesnot matter as will be detailed later.)

"Now, .whatever you do, do not tell me the page number. Justkeep the page open and don't change your mind. What page would youlike to use? the left hand page or the right? The left, good!Add the digits of the page number together so that we can choosea word on the page. What is the total of the digits? 15! Good!So count to the 15th word and concentrate on it. (NOTEI The twodigits of the 15 can be used to look at the 5th word on the firstcolumn.) You are concentrating on the 15th word on the lefthand page, the word in bold type. Right?"

"Right!" "You are thinking of the word 'mismanage' right?"Right!"

son is not aware •• First it was ascertained that the 'M' sectionof the dictionary was opened to. Next that the left hand pagewas chosen, the even-numbered pagesl Then the total of the digitsof the page was known. The total 15 can only apply to two pages!Page 258 and 276 and chances are that page 276 is the one. Sojust a little pumping is necessary to locate the wordS

NOTE that the person on the telephone, the listener, in theprivacy of his own home, is relaxed, unsuspecting and very sure ofhimself. The bits of information he gives you seem insignificantto him since you are not there but miles away from him.

THE WEAK POINT in this method is that you must know what dictionary the person is using. You must ascertain this by a pre'Yiouscall or a former conversation or a visit to the 'person's home.

The current best seller novel can be used also.

OUTS, Let's assume that when the person opens the dictionary, heor she does not open it to the 1M' section. "Waitl" you say,"I must first ask you what your favorite letter of the alphabetis?" "The "R" Fine I Please turn to the "R" section."

The operator must have a copy of the dictionary used in hishands but you must tell the person on the telephone that YOU DONOT HAVE A DICTIONARY WITH YOU AND HAVE NO IDEA WHAT BOOK IS INHIS HANDS.

Another way to limit the person's choice is to tell him topick any page, say between 250 and JOO. "You will have a freecoice of one in 50 pages, with hundreds of words." You state.

THE TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, By using the directory, the above technique can be used with anyone, without need of being acquaintedwith him or her.

AmaZingly, any page number from 1 to 999 will force the listener to.the use of the first two columns, 1 or 2, when the digits of the page number are added. If the total results in asingle digit, like for page 126 totaling 9, tell the person tocount down to the ninth name on the first column. The two-digit totals will start with a 1 or 2.

You can force the listener to choose the first column bysaying, "Please pick a page between say, 250 and JOO. You have afree choice - etc." "You have a page, fine! Whatever you dodo not tell me the page. Now in order to choose a name please addthe three digits of the page, for example, if your page is number256, add the 2 to the 5 and then the 7 to the 6, giving you atotal of 1J. What page are you using the left or the right?"

"The left? Fine! Now do not tell me the total, please! buttake the smallest digit and use that to choose the column, likethe first column on the left or the second, third or fourth.""You do have two digits to the answer? Good! So if your totalis p say 2J, use the 2 for the column. Am I making myself clearon this? You do know what I mean. Right?"

Actually, unless the listener has chosen page 299, totaling20, the rest of the totals will be from 8 (for pages 251 and 260)to 19 for pages 289 and 298. So the first column will always beused, unknown to the listener. If page 299 has been chosen witha total of 20, the person will no doubt say, 'The smallest digitis a zero. What do I do?' "Use the first column." You say.

"And use the other digit for counting down to the name. Whatis the other digit?" You ask. It can only be a 1 or a 2!

THE operator can prepare a list of possible pages as follows.

For pages between 250 and 300.

PAGE NUMBER TOTAL OF COLUMN !:!A~]:__~Q~~IONPOSSIBILIT IES Dlq!~§_

As can be seen by the above chart, the column is 'forced!'But, this is not known by the listener! You can also ascertainwhat page is being used, whether the left hand page, Even, orthe right hand page with the odd numbers. A direct statementcan be used such as, "You are using the right hand page, aren'tyou?" NOTE. A right handed person will hold the telephonebetween his left shoulder and left ear and will choose the righthand page, while a left hand person will do the opposite.

"You are right handed aren't you? You have chosen the righthand page. Right?" This statement throws the burden on the listener who assumes that he should be looking at the right handpage. "Please notice that I do not know to what page you haveturned to. I do not know what column you are looking at. So do nottell me, but I must know the position of the name on the column. To what number did you count to?"

The Even or Odd page can also be forced by saying, "Let's concentrate on the left hand page to make it easy for you."

All you need to do after that is determine the exact page bymaking more direct statements like, "The name you are looking atstarts with a 'K. v Right." If the listener says "No!" Thenyou say, "Well I was close. It starts with the letter 'L. v "

THE RECAP.(using the local telephone directory)

1. Call the person by telephone and tell him or her to get thelocal telephone directory, ascertain the directory being usedand tell the person to choose a page between, say, 250 andJOO.

2. Ascertain the page used, left or right. Let's say the lefthand page is being looked at. And it is page 276.

J. Tell person to add the digits of the page number, and to usethe smaller of the two digits for the column and the other digit for the position of the name on the column, counting down.

4. Tell the person not to tell you the page number or the columnbeing used, but to tell you the position of the name.

5. Once you know the postion, 5, you will know that the total ofthe digits of the page number is 15! And that - - there areonly three even-number pages that fit that total. Pages number258 p 276 and 294. By referring to your prompter sheet (orthe telephone directory) you notice that the names on page 258start with the letter 'K,' while the names on pages 276 and294 have names starting with the letter 'LI'

Right? Wrong? You say? I know there isa picture on the page. I thought it was in that column. I seea Map. Right? A map of Thebes. Right? You are thinking of the word'the' correct? Of course!"

MErHOD. The process-of-elimination is used. And very beautifully. And the reader may use any sentence he wishes, but the sentencemust be studied ahead of time and several charts prepared.

Recommended is the unabridged edition of the Random House Dictionary. You must first make certain that the listener has one ofthese in his home. Both the Random House and the Unabridged Webster's Dictionaries are very popular today and can be found in mosthomes. These dictionaries do not change much through the years andare inexpensive. Both dictionaries are 4 inches thick and containover 260,000 entries. And three columns on each page.

Once the hard work of charting the possibilities of choices, ismade, the rest is easy.

The odds are all on the side of the operator and he has thefacility of making several direct hits, to the amazement of hislistener on the phone.

The operator must first construct a master chart showing allthe words in the sentence. This is shown on page 16.

Note that all the words are to be found on pages which havepictures, maps, etc., except the words 'street' and 'get.'

This means that your statement, "I see that there is a pictureon that page," will be correct most of the time. The odds are allin favor of it. So that if you are correct, YOU HAVE MADE A HITIRIGHT FROM THE STARr I But, if the listenere says, "Nol There

•page." Then your next s-tatemerrt should be, "You are looking atthe left hand page. Correct?" This should be another hitS

As can be seen by the chart, most of the words appear on theleft hand page. The chart shows 11 words on the left hand pageand only 5 words on the right hand page. So the odds are in yourfavor. (after the first call you have eliminated two words,'street' and 'get.' So that actually you now only have to dealwith 10 words on the left hand page and 4 on the right hand page.)

The operator should have charts prepared showing the words onthe left hand page (10) and another chart showing the words onthe right hand page.

Say that the chosen word is on the left hand page. The 10words in the left hand page can be divided into two groups:eight of the words have a page number less then 1000 andtwo of the words have the page number over 1000!

So your next statement should be, "Please look at the pagenumber so that I can get a better picture at where you are looking.""The page 'number is under 1000. It has three digits or less.Correct?" If he says NO! then you know that he is thinkingof the words 'walking' or 'thel' In the above example, theperson had circled the word 'the' so you can easily tell whatthe word was by saying that there is a picture in the columnlor the page!

Chances are that he will have chosen a word with the pagenumber under 1000. "The page number contains J digits. Right?"If so you have eliminated the word 'a.' And now you have onlysix words to deal with. (the word 'the' appears twice).Three of the words have page numbers over 500 and three under

5000"The page number is an even number. Correct?" This is a hit.

All the pages on the left hand side are even! "The page numberis under 500. Correct? Am I correct?" Whatever. But now youonly have to deal with three words 0 You can get to the right wordby further 'pumping' as to how many letters in the word or thepicture on the column or page.

Note also, that four of the words appear in the center column~

and one in the left hand column and the other on the right handcolumnl

The reader may surmise at first glance that anyone can see throughthe method, but keep in mind that the listener assumes that youare doing this on the spur of the moment, impromptu, and reallyhas no idea all the preparation you have made. You do make a lotof amaZing hits. You are far away. The experience to the listeneris new and novel, and weird. AND you have told the listener thatyou do not have a dictionary!

So much for The Random House Mystery. Try it. It is fun.

stay in the position and job that you want. Eventually you willreceive a promotion. Perseverance pays off, he says."

~George. George! He hung up!"

Your sitter will be awed and thrilled in a morbid way. She willwant to jump and shout saying, "How marvelous! How simply marvelous!" She will smile at you. She has just seen a miracle, a forbidden one, to boot.

When she leaves your hall of wonders, she will want to run andtell her friends. They will not believe me, she thinks. I hardlybelieve it myself. But I saw it with my own eyes. How else could hehave known my problem?

To clinch it, George can also give her a 'private reading!'George can tell her about the time when she fell and injured herknee. George can tell her about that man that made a pass at heramorously and warn her to layoff. Stick to your husband, Georgeadvises. That is the best course.

George also tells her about her children. Her daughter is having problems with her boyfriend. Tell her to go easy. He is a goodcatch. etc.

4~ot~ ~ea.dintfA-.-As stated before, a lady Seer in Long Island, N.Y. is reaping

a harvest doing 'readings' over the phone and she is booked solid! When a client calls for an appointment, he or she is told that

the seer cannot 'read' her until )0 days later as she is bookedsolid for the next )0 days. In the meantime, the client is told tosend her fee of $100 and a 'history' of her family so that propercredit may be given. Amazingly, the client tells the medium practically everything about her family giving names of couples, children, relatives, accupations, employers, etc.

In the meantime the Seer checks further by studying consumersurveys, censuses, credit records, insurance surveys, etc.

On the day of the reading, the client is overwhelmed with thedata and advice thrown back at her, etc. She then says, "The Seertold me everything! She even told me about my car accident of twoyears ago and the name of my grandfather, etc, etc."

In vogue these days is the sweet voice over the phone saying,"Hello! This is a consumer survey. We are sending you some moneysaving coupons. What king of coffee do you drink? What is yourannual income? What radio station to you listen to most? How manychildren in your family?" etc., etc. In a few moments the sweetvoice over the phone knows all about you.
