friends We are gathering at the 7th Annual Stand Up & Be Counted

benefit to celebrate what it means to be an advocate.

Advocates stand up for something they believe in. They see

opportunity for success. They do something about it.

That’s why Agahozo-Shalom exists – to stand up for the

vulnerable kids of Rwanda.

Our kids want what every child deserves: a sense of purpose,

an education, close family relationships, and a successful

future. Because of YOU, in the span of 4 short years at

Agahozo-Shalom, our kids are provided with all of that, and

emerge as change-makers who are going out into their

communities and making a difference!

We simply couldn’t do it without you. Everyone needs a

community of friends to help.

That’s who you are. Thank you for standing up. Thank you

for standing for the inspiring kids who have faced such

hardship. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your

continuing support.

Love, The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village Family

Andrew J. and Erna Finci Viterbi USC Shoah Foundation Executive

Director Chair at the Institute in 2014.

In the United Kingdom, Stephen founded the National Holocaust

Centre and co-founded the Aegis Trust. He was also inaugural

Chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

Stephen is the founder of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Executive

Producer of Kwibuka, the anniversary commemoration of the

genocide in Rwanda and a trustee of the South Africa Holocaust

and Genocide Foundation.

A lauded international speaker and author, Stephen has numerous

publications and awards to his name.

Dr James M. Smith CBE

CEO Aegis Trust

James Smith is a co-founder of the UK National Holocaust Centre along with his brother Stephen and parents. During the Kosovo crisis in 1999 he was a volunteer physician with the International Medical Corps (He was a trainee surgeon, having qualified as a medical doctor in Leeds, 1993). The late, costly and destructive international response to the ethnic cleansing Kosovo Crisis convinced James that the public health approach to the prevention of diseases should be applied to the prevention of genocide.

He co-founded the Aegis Trust in 2000 and remains the Chief Executive Officer.

In 2002 he staged the first major international conference on genocide prevention with the UK Foreign Office (held at The Holocaust Centre). In 2004, working with the Rwandan Government and Kigali City Council, he played a key role in establishing the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda’s capital, at a site where some 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide lie buried. It receives tens of thousands of visitors each year, world leaders among them.

James visited Darfur in 2004 and led Aegis Trust’s campaign to limit the crimes against humanity in the region. He has subsequently revisited both Sudan and South Sudan.

The Peace Education program led by Aegis Trust in Rwanda is now being applied as a tool for prevention by community leaders in countries at-risk of mass atrocities, notably in Central African Republic, South Sudan and Kenya.

James is the President of the UK National Holocaust Centre.

He was awarded the CBE in the New Year’s Honors List in 2014 for services to Holocaust education and genocide prevention.

AS

YVThe Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) in Rwanda was

imagined and founded by Anne Heyman as a response to

the overwhelming orphan population devastated by the

1994 genocide in that country. Of Rwanda’s total population

of 11.78 million, nearly 3 million children were left orphaned

and vulnerable, with little or no chance for a future.

Today, ASYV is a model community of living, learning, and

healing for Rwanda’s most vulnerable youth. In their four

years at ASYV, our kids are creating new possibilities and

opportunities for themselves and the world around them.

2015 marks the Agahozo-Shalom’s seventh year in operation.

Thanks to YOUR GIFTS and our remarkable team in the

Village, the kids who arrive broken are transformed into

change-makers who leave the Village filled with hope, skills, a

belief in themselves, prepared and ready to impact the world.

With your continued support, ASYV will continue to be

the place where the rhythm of life is restored. The Village

not only saves the lives of the kids who live there, but also

makes a significant impact on the surrounding villages,

Rwanda as a whole, and across the globe.

Born as a response to great tragedy, Agahozo-Shalom

today is a haven of hope and joy, where future means more

than finding a next meal. Thank you for being part of this

amazing journey. With you, we are truly changing the world!

This event reminds us all of Anne’s ability to inspire us to be thoughtful about our philanthropy and to be involved with our philanthropy, both financially and with our time and effort. She set the bar very high and made the world a better place as a result. It also reminds us of Seth’s message to honor Anne by paying it forward. Her memory is a blessing.

This past January I was fortunate to make my first trip to ASYV in Rwanda. This gave me the best way to see the complete picture of the amazing impact this organization has on the children and their future. It started with visiting the Genocide museum, then to the rural areas where the orphaned children live, then to seeing the village and the nurturing environment where they thrive. It then concluded with a graduation ceremony where the students, with pride and determination, demonstrated their confidence and optimism for the future.

DEAR STUDENTS OF ASYV,May you continue to heal, learn, grow, prosper and contribute to your society to the fullest extent of Anne's dreams and visions for you and may you adapt and enhance that vision to reflect who you are, as Anne would want you to. I know that the precious qualities that Anne brought to her work with you will continue to inform and infuse your lives along your journey: warmth and caring, generosity of spirit, steadfast adherence to cherished values, reaching for aspirational goals and a lot of hard work. With this recipe, Anne's recipe, you will succeed! With love and respect,Marjorie Vandow
