Less Than ZeroNegative Numbers Posters
Poster Project
• Each student makes a poster featuring negative numbers.
• Use computers to draw, copy pictures, and type your text.
• Or, you can make your poster by hand with construction paper and a glue stick
• Work in pairs or individually
Adding negative numbersSame sign
add, then keep the sign
-2 + -3 = -5
Add the numbers 2 + 3 Then, keep the sign -5
Different signsubtract, then use
the sign of the larger number
-3 + 2 = -1Subtract the numbers Then, use the sign of
the larger number -3
3 - 2 -1
2
Subtracting negative numbers
Change to addition of the opposite value
- 2 - -3Change to addition
- 2 + 3
The opposite
of -3 is 3
Then, follow the addition rules
- 2 + 3 = 1 3
Multiplying and Dividing Negative Numbers
If the signs are the same
-2 x -3 = 6 The answer is positive
If the signs are Different
-6 ÷ -3 = 2
-2 x 3 = -6
-6 ÷ 3 = -2 The answer is Negative

Add unlike signstake the absolute value of each number
subtract one number from the otheruse the sign from the larger number
8 + -6| 8 | | -6 |

The Steelers gained 8 yards on their first rushing play. Then Roethlisberger got sacked for a loss
of 6 yards. This was a total gain of 2 yards.
I borrowed my $1000 from my dad for a used car. I earned
$1,250 at my summer job at the car wash. Now I have $250 to spend on gas and insurance.
-1000 + 1250 | -1000 | | 1250 |
1000 12501250 - 1000 = 250
Adding numbers with different signs
☛ take the absolute value of each number ☛ subtract one number from the other☛ use the sign from the larger number
It was already really cold, only 4˚F. Then the temperature dropped by 7˚. It got down to -3˚F.
4 - 7 = -3
Ben Roethlisberger gained 4,077 yards this season. If you add the 269 yards he lost to sacks, he gained 3808 yards.
4077 + -269
Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive number
4077 - 269 = 3808
My electric bill is $75 per month. How much did I pay in 2011 for electricity?
12 x -75 = -900
Multiplying with negative numbersIf the signs are different, the answer is negativeIf the signs are the same, the answer is positive
I used a

card to
buy
video games.
It cost
$125 for
5 games. What

125 divide
d by -5
is -25.
So I ow

Design
Time and Effort
Math
Graphics and text are an appropriate size and interesting shape and are arranged well. Design was well thought out. The work is neat, clear, and easy to read.
Graphics and text are appropriate size and some attention was given to design. The work is organized and usually easy to read.
The arrangement of items is not very attractive. It appears there was not a lot of planning. The work is unorganized and may be hard to read at times.
It appears little attention was given to design. The work appears sloppy and unorganized.
Class time was used wisely. Much time and effort went into the planning and design.
Class time was used wisely. Student could have put in more effort.
Class time was not always used wisely, but student did complete the project.
Class time was not used wisely and the student put in little effort.
Correct terminology and notation are always used, making it easy to understand what was done.Explanation is detailed and clear.
Correct terminology and notation are usually used, making it fairly easy to understand what was done.Explanation is clear.
Correct terminology and notation are used, but it is sometimes not easy to understand what was done.Explanation is a little difficult to understand, but includes critical components.
There is little use, or a lot of inappropriate use, of terminology and notation.Explanation is difficult to understand and is missing several components OR was not included.
Have Fun!!
• Please find a way to make this an enjoyable project for yourself.
• If you choose not to participate, you will not use the computer and you will be expected to work out of the textbook, completing problems 1 through 43 starting on page 32
