During These Troubled Times

Overhearing Jesus

At the ascension we, like the disciples in

today’s reading in Acts, are left looking at

the sky. But in the High Priestly Prayer

(John 17), Jesus brings us back to earth. In

the prayer he speaks not only from the

perspective of the risen and ascended one,

but as the Word of God, now made flesh.

The prayer anticipates the accomplishments

of this Word, which does not return empty

(Isa. 55:11), namely in the fulfillment of the

“hour” of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

It is as if Jesus has already ascended “to my

Father and your Father, to my God and

your God” (John 20:17), and has returned

to tell us something vital.

As we overhear Jesus, we learn that God’s

character and motive are identical to those

of Jesus, who has now, fully and

completely, “made God’s name known.”

We no longer have to speculate about the

nature of God. God’s purposes and love are

made known in Jesus. But we also learn

about ourselves. Jesus’ prayer frequently

mentions the “world”—the world at once

hostile to God and God’s anointed, and yet

also beloved of God (John 3:16). With

Jesus’ commissioning today we have our

work to do, to make God known in and

through Christ Jesus. The Living One works

through us as “words within the world,”

who no longer seek meaning among the

dead, but are empowered to make known

the vibrant, new reality of Easter.

There will be NO birthday luncheon this month!

Our garden received a blessing!

Last week a wonderful neighbor named Kris stopped by

and donated about 3 to 4 dozen of vegetable starts

for anybody to use in our Community Garden.

She was very grateful that she was able to have a

place to donate them to and would only like for us to

collect the black starter pots her veggies came in, so

she can pick them back up.

You can find peppers, tomatoes, kale, broccoli and

cabbage by the storage container and you are welcome

to help yourself.

Thank you, beautiful neighbor! We appreciate you!

Spanaway Lutheran Church has received very helpful

documentation from the ELCA and our Synod on moving

towards a re-opening for in-person worship. These two

rather large documents will come to you in a separate

email, as well as being made accessible on our website at

www.spanawaylutheran.org.

SLC, together with many other churches, surely has a long

road ahead and many things to consider and prepare to

keep parishioners, guests and staff as safe as possible when

the day comes to finally re-open the building. Please know

leadership will work on putting wheels in motion and plans

in place so the SLC congregation can be back together

again for worship. In the meantime, please stay home, stay

safe and stay well!

God’s blessings, Stefanie

We would like to acknowledge Cheryl and Tim Drewes who,

working from home, practice and explore new concepts of

worship every single day. (Especially Tim who doesn’t have

to do this for SLC!) Those two are part of a small group who

have stayed deeply involved and who work very hard to

keep up a sense of normalcy and connection for the

congregation. Cheryl is also studying documents and other

materials about eventually resuming in-person

worship. She is very knowledgeable on this topic, as well as

many others. We are fortunate to have her as our Director

of Music Ministries!
