Simples Machines

Wheels and Axle A. Save As.Step 1. If necessary, open your Track Assembly 15 file.

Step 2. Click File Menu > Save As.

Step 3. Key-in WHEELS AND AXLE ASSEMBLY for the filename and press ENTER.

B. Insert Truck Assembly.

Step 1. Click Insert Components on theAssembly toolbar.

Step 2. Click Browse in the Property Manager.

Step 3. Select your TRUCK ASSEMBLY file and click Open. You might have to change Files of Type to All Files to view the assembly file.

Step 4. Click approximately where the Truck Assembly is positioned in Fig. 1.

C. Mate: Wheels, Body and Track 6.

Step 1. Click Mate on the Assembly toolbar.

Step 2. Click cylindrical face front Wheel and top face of Track 6, Fig. 2.

Step 3. Click Add/Finish Mate in Mate pop-up toolbar to add a Tangent mate, Fig. 3.

Step 4. Click cylindrical face rear Wheel and top face of Track 6, Fig. 4.

Step 5. Click Right on the Standard Views toolbar. (Ctrl-4)

Step 6. The rear Wheel should be positioned above the Track 6, Fig. 5. If in oppo-site direction, Fig. 6, click Flip Mate

Alignment in the Mate pop-up, Fig. 7.

Step 7. Click Add/Finish Mate in Mate pop-up toolbar to add a Tangent mate.

Step 8. Rotate view to view rear face of Truck Body as shown in Fig. 8. To rotate, hold down middle mouse button (wheel) and drag.

Step 9. Click rear face of Truck Body (tail gate) and rear face of Track 6, Fig. 8.

Step 10. Click Add/Finish Mate in Mate pop-up toolbar to add a Coincident mate.

Step 11. Click Isometric on the View toolbar. (Ctrl-7)

Step 12. Expand the Design Tree, Fig. 9.

Step 13. Click Right Plane, Fig. 9.

Step 14. Expand Truck Assembly and click Right Plane, Fig. 9 and Fig. 10.

Step 15. Click Add/Finish Mate in Mate pop-up toolbar to add a Coincident mate.

Step 16. Click OK in the Property Manager.

Step 17. Save. Use Ctrl-S.

D. Enable SolidWorks Motion.Step 1. If necessary, turn on SolidWorks Motion. To turn on SolidWorks

Motion, click Tools Menu > Add-Ins.

Step 2. Check SolidWorks Motion check box under Active Add-Ins and Start-Up, Fig. 11. Click OK.

E. Type of Study.Step 1. Click Motion Study 1 tab at the lower left of the drawing area, Fig. 12.

Step 2. Set Type of Study to Motion Analysis, Fig. 12.

F. Solve as Flexible.Step 1. Right click Truck Assembly in the

Motion Manager design tree and click Component Properties, Fig. 13.

Step 2. In the Component Properties dialog box set: Solve as to Flexible, Fig. 14 click OK.

G. Gravity.Step 1. Click Gravity on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 15.

Step 2. In the Gravity Property Manager set: under Gravity Parameters, Fig. 16 select Y

the green arrow in the bottom right corner of the drawing area should point down, Fig. 17. Click OK .

H. Contact.Step 1. Click Contact on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 18.

Step 2. In the Property Manager set: under Selections, Fig. 19 check Use contact groups in Group 1 box click all Parts in the Assembly: all four Wheels and Body, Fig. 20 click in Group 2 box, Fig. 19 click Track 15 and Track 6, Fig. 20 under Friction, Fig. 19 uncheck Static friction click OK .

I. Motion Study Properties.

Step 1. Click Motion Study Properties on the Mo-tion Manager toolbar, Fig. 18.

Step 2. In the Property Manager set: under Motion Analysis, Fig. 21 Frames per second: to 250 check Use Precise Contact click OK .

J. Suppress Mates.Step 1. Set the Motion Study

duration to 1 second on the Timeline. To change duration, in the top Timeline drag the Key at 5 seconds, Fig. 22 to 1 second, Fig. 23.

Step 2. Expand Truck Assembly in the Motion Manager design tree and expand Mates in Wheels and Axle Assembly, Fig. 23.

Step 3. Suppress all 4 Mates. To suppress the Mates, click the first Mate, then hold down the Shift key and click the last Mate. Release the Shift key, right click

and click Suppress from the menu, Fig. 23. We used the Mates to align the Truck to start position on Track. Later, we will unsuppress the Mates to realign Truck back to starting position.

Step 4. Save. Use Ctrl-S.

K. Calculate and Play.

Step 1. Click Calculate on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 24.

Step 2. Set the Playback Speed to .1, Fig. 24.

Step 3. Click Play from Start on the Motion Man-ager toolbar, Fig. 24 and Fig. 25.

Drag Key from 5 seconds to 1 seconds

L. Results and Plots.

Step 1. Click Results and Plots on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 26.

Step 2. In the Property Manager set: under Result, Fig. 27 Category to Displacement/Velocity/Acceleration Sub Category to Linear Velocity Result Component to Magnitude

for Feature click the side face of Truck Body, Fig. 28

click OK .

Step 3. What's the Velocity?

Step 4. Save. Use Ctrl-S.

M. Create Word Document.Step 1. Right click the

Plot1 and click Copy Clip-board, Fig. 30.

Step 2. Open a new Word file.

Step 3. Key-in Truck with Wheels into the Word document, Fig. 31.

Step 4. Paste (Ctrl-V) Plot1 into Word document, Fig. 31.

Step 5. Switch back to SolidWorks.

N. Suppress Wheels.Step 1. Rewind Motion Study to 0 sec-

onds. To rewind, either drag the Play Head back to the begin-ning in the Motion Manager toolbar or drag the Time Bar, the gray vertical line back to 0 in the Timeline, Fig. 32. It's good practice to rewind before you make changes in the Timeline, otherwise you could create unwanted Keys.

Step 2. Suppress Wheels in the Feature Manager. To, suppress Wheels, click the first Wheel in the Feature Manager, then hold down the Shift Key and click the last Wheel. Release the

Shift key and click Suppress from the menu, Fig. 33.

Step 3. Click Right on the Standard Views toolbar. (Ctrl-4)

Step 4. You can see the truck is above the Track, Fig. 34. We will "use" a Mate to bring Truck to Track. To "use" Mate, continue as if creating Mate, allow Mate to bring parts together, then instead of OKing Mate, Cancel Mate. This will set Truck on Track and we will not have to find and delete the Mate.

Step 5. Click Mate on the Assembly toolbar.

Step 6. Rotate view to view bottom face of Truck Body. Hold down middle mouse button (wheel) and drag to rotate view, Fig. 35. To Zoom in, hold down Shift key and drag with middle mouse button (wheel). To pan, hold down Ctrl key and drag with middle mouse button (wheel).

Step 7. Click bottom face of Truck Body, Fig. 35.

Step 8 Click Isometric on the View toolbar. (Ctrl-7)

Step 9. Click top face of Track 6, Fig. 36.

Step 10. Click Yes to update affected Keys, Fig. 37.

Step 11. Click Cancel in the Mate Property Manager, Fig. 38. This sets the Truck on the Track, but doesn't create the Mate that we would have to delete.

Step 12. Click Calculate on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 39.

Step 13. What's the Velocity in Plot1?

Step 14. Click Play from

Start on the Motion Manager toolbar, Fig. 40.

Step 15. Save. Use Ctrl-S.

O. Copy and Paste Plot into Word Document.Step 1. Right click the

Plot1 and click Copy Clip-board, Fig. 42.

Step 2. Switch to your Word document (Alt-Tab).

Step 3. Key-in Truck without Wheels, Fig. 43.

Step 4. Paste the Plot1 into Word docu-ment, Fig. 43.

Step 5. Switch back to SolidWorks (Alt-Tab).

P. Unsuppress Wheels.Step 1. Rewind Motion Study to 0 sec-

Q. Unsuppress Mates.Step 1. Expand Truck Assembly in the Motion

Manager design tree and expand Mates in Wheels and Axle, Fig. 47.

Step 2. Unsuppress the 4 Mates. To suppress the Mates, click the first Mate, then hold down the Shift key and click the last Mate. Release the Shift key, right

click and click Unsuppress from the menu , Fig. 47. Unsuppressed Mates brings Wheels up tangent to Track 6.

Step 3. Suppress the 4 Mates. To suppress the Mates, click the first Mate, then hold down the Shift key and click the last Mate.

Release the Shift key, right click and click Unsuppress from the menu , Fig. 49. Suppressed Mates frees up Truck for Motion Study.

Step 4. Click Calculate on the Motion Manager toolbar.

Step 5. Click Play from Start on the Mo-tion Manager toolbar.

Step 6. Save. Use Ctrl-S.
