In The Good Old Summer Time
Coming Soon! New Floor Covering Center
Demolition and remodeling has begun
on the Leonard building adjacent to
Niehaus Home Center in Vincennes.
The Leonard building was purchased
two years ago and had been used as a
warehouse for carpeting and other
building materials. It is now in the process of being remodeled and
turned into a showroom for flooring products - carpeting, hardwoods,
laminates, ceramic tile and accessories. The building had originally
been an auto dealership with the back half as an auto repair shop.
Some of the inside walls had to be removed,
a door cut through from our current building
to the adjoining building, and everything
washed down. The next steps will be new
ceilings, lighting, painting, heating, air con-
ditioning, and floor treatment - a lot of work
- but the end result will be worth the effort.
The new Mohawk Flooring Center will more
than triple the size of the
space available now for
showroom display and in-
stock products. The Mohawk
company has provided pro-
fessional designers to come in
and put together the total new
look - wall color, floor treat-
ment and floor plan for the
new center.
Like any major re-model pro-
ject - it takes time and plan-
ning to pull it all together. It
may be as long as a couple of
months before this project is complete, but when it is
done, it will be one of the best Flooring Centers around
this area.

The new Mohawk Flooring Center will be designed similar to the one shown above
- new floor covering, displays - a whole new updated look
Demolition starts to make way for the new Mohawk
Flooring Center.
Agriculture is the largest tax-paying entity in Knox County,
and watermelon is a significant part of overall agriculture in
the area.
Indiana ranks sixth in the United States in watermelon pro-
duction, and during the month of August, the home-grown
goodness is available in Indiana. From late July until mid-
September, these juicy fruit (vegetables) leave Indiana fields,
headed for happy consumers scattered throughout the country
and into Canada.
Approximately 80 percent of Indiana's watermelon crop is grown in southwestern Indiana, in and around Knox County. The Knox
County Chamber of Commerce declared the watermelon industry its 2006 Industry of the Year, and the Illiana Watermelon
Association accepted the recognition on behalf of the industry.

Another mile stone in the history of our family
business took place last month. The fifth generation
started to work at Niehaus Home Center. Mallory
Niehaus, daughter of Butch and Tina Niehaus, started
as a cashier this past July. Mallory will be a freshman
at Rivet High School this year. She will work part time
during the school year. In the next several years many
more of the fifth generation will be working in the
Niehaus Companies.
Next year, 2008, we will be celebrating our 75th year in business at the
same location (11th & Main). My father, Francis Niehaus and my grandfather, Ben
Niehaus, started our company in 1933 as a cabinet shop and planning mill. Over the
years this small cabinet shop has expanded to one of the largest family owned lum-
ber companies in the state. Niehaus Companies is now composed of nine companies
-three Home Centers - located in Vincennes, Robinson, IL and Terre Haute. Niehaus
also has three wholesale companies called WBM - located in Vincennes, St. Louis,
MO, and Nashville, TN. There is also two manufacturing/fabricating plants - a door
plant and a counter top shop. The ninth company, and the newest, is the import divi-
sion - Karran and Lansen Sinks. This division is housed in the old Big Blue
Building on Willow Street in Vincennes.
The picture below, taken approximately 1930, shows my father and grand-
father at the Old Vincennes Lumber Company where they worked as millwrights. In
1933 they quit and started their own cabinet shop.
The fourth generation is now running our company, my three sons. Butch
is President of the company. David is Vice President of Retail Operations and Eric
is Vice President of wholesale operations.
As I grow older, it is gratifying to see my children and grandchildren taking
interest in the business that has taken 75 years to build, and to know that if the Lord
is willing, it will go on and be passed down to new generations to come. I am sure
their Great and Great - Great Grandpa’s must be smiling down on them.
The Fifth Generation
Ponderings....
• Regular naps prevent old age......especially if you take them while dri-ving.
• Having one child makes you a par-
ent; having two makes you a referee...
• Marriage is a relationship in which
one person is always right and the
other is the husband!
• I believe we should all pay our tax
with a smile. I tried - but they wanted
cash.
• A child's greatest period of growth
is the month after you've purchased
new school uniforms.
• Don't marry the person you want
to live with, marry the one you cannot
live without... but whatever you do,
you'll regret it later.
• You can't buy love, but you pay
heavily for it...
• Laziness is nothing more than the
habit of resting before you get tired.
• Those who can't laugh at them-
selves leave the job to others.

ANY TIME, ANY PLACE13 easy ways to move more
1. Walk into a bank or restaurant instead of using the drive-up.
2. Circle the outside isles of the grocery store before you start
shopping. (That’s where the freshest, healthiest food is, any-
way.)
3. When you bring groceries into the house, make a separate
trip for each bag.
4. Get on your hands and knees to scrub floors.
5. While you’re brushing your teeth, do some calf stretches
and leg lifts.
6. Walk to the airport gate instead of using the moving walk-
ways or taking a shuttle.
7. Do stretching exercises for your neck and shoulders when
you’re stuck in traffic.
8. Replace a sit-down meeting with a one-on-one business
walk.
9. Walk around the playing field during your child’s soccer or softball practice.
10. Do leg lifts while sitting at your computer.
11. When you make the bed, work quickly and stretch farther across the bed.
12. Gently squeeze a tennis ball to strengthen your grip while sitting at your desk.
13. Park as far away from the building entrance as possible when you go to the
office, run errands, or go shopping.
Tick Removal
What is the best way to remove a tick?
To remove attached ticks, use the following
procedure:
1. Use fine-tipped tweezers or shield your
fingers with a tissue, paper towel, or rubber
gloves.
2. Grasp the tick as close to the skin surface
as possible and pull upward with steady,
even pressure. Do not twist or jerk the tick;
this may cause the mouthparts to break off
and remain in the skin. (If this happens,
remove mouthparts with tweez-
ers. Consult your healthcare
provider if infection occurs.)
3. Do not squeeze, crush, or
puncture the body of the tick
because its fluids (saliva, hemolymph, gut
contents) may contain infectious organisms.
4. Do not handle the tick with bare hands
because infectious agents may enter through
mucous membranes or breaks in the skin.
This precaution is particularly directed to
individuals who remove ticks from domes-
tic animals with unprotected fingers.
Children, the elderly, and immuno-compro-
mised persons may be at greater risk of
infection and should avoid this procedure.
5. After removing the tick, thoroughly disin-
fect the bite site and wash your hands with
soap and water.
6. You may wish to save the tick for identi-
fication in case you become ill within 2 to 3
weeks. Your doctor can use the information
to assist in making an accurate diagnosis.
Place the tick, along with several blades of
grass, into a small container (e.g. a clean
screw-cap pill bottle or a zip-lock bag) for
later examination. Write the date of the bite
on a piece of paper with a pencil and place
it in the bag.

NEW JOB JITTERS
A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask
him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the
car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and
stopped a yard from a shop window. For a second every-
thing went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, “Look
mate, don’t ever do that again. You scared the daylights
out of me!”
The passenger apologized and said, “I didn’t realize that
a little tap would scare you so much.” The driver replied,
“Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as
a cab driver - I’ve been driving a funeral van for the last
25 years.”

As we have mentioned in previous Newsletters, the Big
Buck Store’s name has been changed to Niehaus Home
Center’s - one in Terre Haute, IN and one in Robinson, IL.
The Terre Haute store has been renovated over the last
couple of years. The store is pretty much a full service
store - they offer kitchen and bath design, Aristokraft
Cabinetry, Andersen Windows, Therma Tru Doors, roofing
products, siding products, a wide range of building materi-
als, engineered lumber, and hardware as well as delivery
service.
We have several new people that has joined the company
team since we last featured their location.
Tim Malooley manages the operation that primarily caters
to contractors and remodelers. It is located on Ft.
Harrison Road in Terre Haute and has some stiff competi-
tion with a Lowe’s, and a Meinard’s close at hand. But
with this team of salespeople and support staff - they are
doing a great job.
Contractor Appreciation cook-out lunch at the Terre Haute store - a free lunch co-sponsored with the
Therma Tru Door Comany.
Page 7 Niehaus News
Each of our retail stores hold several events a
year to show our appreciation to our contrac-
tor/remodeler customers. One of those events is
a golf outing, usually held in September. The
contractor and a couple of his key employees are
invited for a free day of golf, lunch and dinner
and a large array of door prizes at the end of the
day. The Terre Haute store holds theirs at
Prides Creek Country Club.
Some of the other events are free lunches
throughout the year, usually co-sponsored with
one of our key vendors. This is one of the ways
we can say “thank you” to our customers, and
that we appreciate their business.
A big salute to the Terre Haute team and
“thanks” for all that you do.

Antiperspirant & Deodorant
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not
closely monitor personal care products. Manufacturers are
protected by "trade secret" formulas so all ingredients don't
even have to be listed on the label. This occurs regularly in
perfume and fragrances, for example. Many contain chemicals
that can cause allergic reactions as well as cancer and other
diseases. Many manufacturers believe that they can include
small amounts of poison since at those levels there is no risk.
But we use our favorite personal products regularly, com-
pounding that minute amount every day and sometimes more
than once each day. Considering that many personal care
products, like deodorants and Antiperspirant, are created to
stay on our bodies for hours, more potential harmful chemicals
can be absorbed through our skin and into our body. Therefore
it is upon us, as diligent consumers, to get the facts and choose
what's safest and best for our bodies. We need to learn the
possible effects and safer alternatives.
Antiperspirant, even so-called "natural" ones
contain aluminum that work to clog our
pores and stop us from perspiring.
Aluminum is a poison. It has been linked to
Alzheimer's disease. There is new research
which indicates that there may be a link
between breast cancer and Antiperspirant. In
particular, studies are showing that it travels more freely into
our lymphatic system when underarms are shaved. Look on
your antiperspirant label for aluminum as:
* aluminum chlorohydrate * ammonium aluminum sulfate
* potassium alum * potassium aluminum sulfate
* mineral salts or crystal
Not only are we endangering our lives by using chemicals like
aluminum, and supporting businesses that destroy our natural
resources, but we are also polluting our environment every
time we use them. The poisons wash into our water system
every time we wash. This harms our future, our delicate
ecosystems, and our drinking water.
Ammonium alum is different. It is a prevalent natural com-
pound. It cannot be absorbed into the skin and does not clog
pores the way aluminum chloride does. It does not kill the
bacteria and does not stop perspiration, however, ammonium
alum works to inhibit the growth of bacteria and therefore
those critters that cause bad odor. This is the primary ingredi-
ent in deodorant crystals which are found to be safe and effec-
tive.
Be wary of labels as they are not regulated strongly. A product
can be labeled "natural" and still have highly processed ver-
sions of the natural ingredient meaning that they are really
poor imitations and potentially harmful chemicals. Even the
"organic" label can be abused since only one ingredient can
qualify for the label!

Did You Know? That broccoli consumption has increased
over 940 percent over the last 25 years!
It's a good source of Vitamin A, and vit-
amin C, potassium, folacin, iron and
fiber. Broccoli has as much calcium
ounce per ounce as milk and contains a
few important phytochemicals: beta-
carotene, indoles and isothiocyanates.
Phytochemicals prevent carcinogens
(cancer causing substances) from form-
ing. They also stop carcinogens from
getting to target cells and help boost
enzymes that detoxify carcinogens. So
next time you sit down to eat and broc-
coli is on the menu. Remember it really
is good for you!
Fresh vs. Frozen
Packaged frozen
broccoli differs
from fresh in its
nutrient content.
The flower buds
or florets are
richer in beta-carotene than the stalks.
Manufactures typically cut off most of
the stalk before packaging it, so frozen
broccoli may contain 35% more beta-
carotene by weight than fresh broccoli.
The downside is that frozen broccoli has
twice as much sodium as fresh (up to 68
mg per 10 oz. package), about half the
calcium, and smaller amounts of iron,
thiamin, riboflavin, and vitamin C.
