But that is the only negative you will read here. HLV deferred the opening kick and Springville was all too happy to receive. Elias Nissen was back for the O’s and he ran it back to the 34. Nissen took the first hand off and picked up a first down, the first of many to come. Back to back play calls to Cody Blake set the O’s up with 1st and 10 on the HLV 14 where Sam Scriver rolled out and hit Peter Brooks for a nice over the shoulder catch in the end zone for the first TD of the game. While Allsup’s PAT was blocked, it was the O’s who drew first blood. The Warrior’s answered however and with a 2 point conversion took an 8-6 lead, their ONLY lead of the game. The Oriole’s and HLV exchanged possessions on the next two series and then it was Springville’s turn to make some noise. After an HLV punt, Nissen took a hand off from Scriver and ran it all the way for a score. Nissen again kept it for the 2 point conversion and the O’s had a 14-8 lead. The start of the 2nd quarter had the ball in HLV’s hands but facing 4th and 1, they went for it and Elias got in fast and stuffed their back for a loss giving the O’s the ball and 1st down on their own 39. At the risk of sounding redundant, the first play from scrimmage was a hand off to Nissen and another Springville touchdown. Allsup’s PAT was good for a 21-8 lead with 11:45 in the half. After forcing HLV to punt, with 3rd down on the HLV 38, Nissen again ran one in to the end zone for 6. An Allsup extra point made it 28-8 with 10:15 on the clock. Allsup’s ensuing kick off was a 60 yard field goal as the kid with the heavy leg sailed it right through the uprights for an impressive touch back. Springville’s defense led by Tyler Stewart and Jesse Robertson cont inued to tighten up the line and HLV would punt again. And Nissen would score again and Allsup’s kick was good again and the O’s held a commanding 35-8 lead. The Warrior’s really struggled to find an offensive threat, everywhere they turned they saw a white jersey. In the next series Scriver hit Kolton Markley on a nice 38 yard pass play to give the O’s 1st and 10 on the HLV 25. The Warrior’s made a good defensive stance on this series and forced Coach Martin to call a time out when Springville had 4th and 9 on the HLV 23. Field Goal? You bet, Allsup easily hit the 40 yarder to put the O’s up 38-8. Again HLV did nothing and had to punt. With just 2:39 in the half and the ball on our own 39 yard line, I still don’t know what happened on the next play nor do I know how, as I along with the HLV defense was keyed on Cody Blake who took an awesome fake handoff and drug the entire 4 man line with him as Elias ran untouched down the near sideline for another touchdown. Allsup made good on his extra point and it was a 45-8 advantage. HLV’s woes continued as they fumbled on their next possession and Drew Hoskins recovered it to give the O’s the ball back on the Warrior 29 with just over a minute to play. Springville stayed conservative and went to the half time break with the 45-8 lead. The 3rd quarter opened up with back to back HLV turn-overs. The first, a Cody Blake interception was called back on a penalty so HLV kindly fumbled the ball on the next play to set us up on their 25 yard line. Blake ran one down to the 6 yard line before Scriver scrambled on a would be keeper only to hit Nissen all alone in the end zone for another score. It was a 52-8 trouncing after Allsup’s kick and with just a few ticks off the 3rd quarter clock, HLV tried to muster up some offense. They failed to do so with stops by Stewart, Trevor Hulett and a sack by Derek Hanshaw. Coach Martin was able to play some younger guys throughout the rest of the game and it wasn’t until the 4th quarter that the O’s would score again. That came on a Tyler McDowell carry when the speedster scampered the length of the field to score a touch down against the battered HLV defense. The 2 point conversion failed, but it was a 58-8 ball game. The Warriors would manage one score in the 4th quarter while the O’s simply ran the clock out for a decisive, convincing and impressive 58-14 win. Nissen (pictured below), a senior who is no doubt on everyone’s radar had 12 carries (all in the first half) for 248 yards and 2 catches for 44 yards and totaled SIX touch downs. Scriver, another senior, went to the air just 7 times and had 4 completions for 87 yards including the bomb to Markley. Stewart and Allsup, also senior’s, each had 10 tackles in the game and Stewart had 5 of them in the backfield for losses. While Coach Martin said, “It took us a little longer than I would of liked to seem to get rolling”, he added that the “ biggest positive I would say was how physical we were with them. Our experience in "big" games showed and were able to get just about anything we wanted especially on offense. I think we also did a great job with adapting to their offense and control the game to our speed. I also thought our special teams looked pretty strong the first game out”. Looking ahead to Elkader, I asked Coach how they’ll prepare this week for a team that was picked by Iowa Prep Sports to finish 3rd in the district; “Our big focus goes towards their QB (Isaiah Hopp) who is a threat running and throwing the ball. We also need to continue to work on our pass defense, both pass rush and pass coverage. Being physical is something we will focus on continuing when we are on offense.” Um, did you happen to notice how many injury time-outs HLV had on Friday? I think the word is outSpringville is one physical team. See you up North on Friday Springville, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

JV CRUISES TO A WIN IN OPENER

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. San Antonio, Texas is where we travel this week. Lanier High School was San Antonio’s first vocational high school and because of that, their mascot is the Vok which is short for vocational. The school of 1400 students, has teams that compete in all traditional sports as well as swimming and diving and water polo. Their athletes wear blue and white while their students have a dress code requiring collared shirts with no writing or logos and khaki pants or skirts.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… Ok sports fans, here’s another week of 8-man football games, make your picks!

Coon Rapids at Ar-We-Va Central City at West Central Kee at Midland Springville at Elkader Here’s what you do, pick your winners and for the tie-breaker, who will rush for more yards? Elias Nissen on Friday night? Or Adrian Peterson of the Viking’s on Sunday? Send your picks to [email protected] and check next weeks issue for the winner. Congratulations to Springville’s Cavanaugh Riley for winning last weeks contest—AGAIN.

I have to admit I was a little concerned when HLV’s JV team hit the field. They

looked, shall we say, enormous. But Coaches Smyth, Thorp and Smalley had

the JV O’s ready to go. Springville maintained ball control throughout the game giving up a late score to imply the 20-14 win was closer than it was. QB Jacob Loehr managed the offense and Carter Gilmore (pictured to the right) moved the ball down the field. John Evens, Andy Hagensick Jordan Raue and Austin Kirchmann made holes in the defense while Andy Hagensick, Max Boland, Nick Stuppi and Matt Carson wreaked havoc on HLV’s offense. James Fitzgerald showed off his kicking skills and Seth Blake and Cavanaugh Riley added some spark on both sides of the ball as did Andrew Blakely, Benjam Tulensalo and Nolan Smith. One injury was suffered and it was a big one, lineman Braden Oxley suffered a severe ankle sprain early in the game and will be out 2-4 weeks. Catch a game Oriole fans, the future looks pretty bright.

A FACE IN THE CROWD… This week we caught up with the birthday girl, Senior Emmie Rommann who was kind enough to take time off from cheering at last week’s HLV football game: What is your favorite treat on a hot day? A chocolate Dilly Bar If you were principal for a day, what is the first action you’d take? Have more crispito’s and mashed potato’s for lunch. If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would you go? Germany What is your favorite class this year? Chemistry What TV show do you HAVE to watch each week? Flashpoint Thanks Emmie—You just never know, at the next Springville event, You could be more than a Face In The Crowd!

ARE YOU READY FOR A TAILGATE PARTY? The Springville Varsity football team opens up at home next week for a match up with Meskwaki. Game time is 7pm, but pre-game festivities are lining up at the high school. Booster’s is sponsoring a tailgate party complete with cheer leaders and food, the 2 main ingredients to any successful football season, besides the team that is, and the rumor is they’ll make an appearance too. So tell your boss you need to leave work early and tell your cook to take the night off—dine with the best sports fans in Linn County—the Springville Oriole Community. Start time is tentatively set for 5pm right in front of the high school building. More info to follow...
