WHAT END-USER NEEDS SHOULD IT DEPARTMENTS ACKNOWLEDGE AND CONSIDER FOR MOBILE COMPUTING IN THE ENTERPRISE?

It is easy for IT professionals to get caught up in the technical details. Enterprise mobile computing is more than just keeping the hardware running and locking down mobile devices. Looking at the business from the perspective of users, empathizing with their needs, and ultimately facilitating their work is the best way to ensure conditions are made better by IT.

End-users expect full access to all their emails, calendars, and contacts without having to use multiple devices. They want to display and edit files (e.g. Word processing documents, spreadsheets, and PDFs). End-users also want to be able to give ad-hoc presentations when meeting with customers and business partners.

The general expectation is if something can be done on a traditional workstation, why can it not be done on a phone or tablet? This means users want to be able to do all available functions on their Web browsers, as well as have full access to business applications like customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP). Most importantly, users are using their mobile devices for personal needs and for business needs. It is ultimately up to IT to make this happen in a way that is secure for the enterprise. WHAT ARE SOME BUSINESS CONSIDERATIONS FOR MOBILE COMPUTING THAT CIOS SHOULD BE THINKING ABOUT?

More exists to mobile computing in the enterprise than simple convenience. With mobile devices having more computing power than recent desktop PCs, having access to business systems and applications anytime and anywhere, is now the expectation. Given the mobility factor, it is critical for IT and management to know that data is properly secured along the way.

Device deployment and management are key. Professionals in the IT environment do not want more headaches brought about by mobile devices that cannot be adequately managed. Whether a physical device, typical business applications (apps), or management software, IT must be able to establish and maintain visibility and control to ensure user requirements are met and data is kept secure. This necessitates being able to setup and push out IT policies and enterprise applications as desired without the technology platform getting in the way. It also requires supporting a “bring your own device” (BYOD) model without negatively impacting the user’s experience.

HOW CAN THE FREE UPGRADE TO BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK OS 2.0 ASSIST ENTERPRISES TO BALANCE BUSINESS AND PERSONAL REQUESTS FOR MOBILE COMPUTING?

Personal BlackBerry PlayBook devices running OS version 2.0 can now be integrated into the enterprise security controls and management capabilities without affecting the users’ personal encounters with their systems.

BlackBerry PlayBook version 2.0 utilizes BlackBerry® Balance™ to separate personal data from work data. BlackBerry Balance is data leak prevention (DLP) technology that helps ward off enterprise security breaches. BlackBerry Balance allows for both personal and work file systems, for automatic work data identification, and for controls that prevent actions such as cutting and pasting and file transfer outside the protected work environment.

Working in conjunction with BlackBerry® Mobile Fusion, BlackBerry Balance aids IT departments to push mandatory and optional enterprise applications over the air, plus specific IT policies, to ensure all BlackBerry PlayBook systems are properly secured. This provides end-to-end protection of business data, even when it is stored and accessed outside the traditional confines of the network. MY BUSINESS IS ALREADY RUNNING THE BLACKBERRY® ENTERPRISE SERVER. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO INCORPORATE BLACKBERRY MOBILE FUSION INTO MY ENVIRONMENT?

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion is RIM’s next-generation mobile device management (MDM) solution for enterprises looking to gain control of their mobile environment once and for all.

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion lets a business manage from one console its existing fleet of BlackBerry smartphones, Android, and iOS devices, even across multiple domains.

A business that is already running BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.03 can download the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion software and connect it to the Studio console. DOES BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK OS 2.0 SUPPORT ERP, CITRIX, AND RELATED BUSINESS APPLICATIONS?

Yes, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 supports business applications such as SAP, Salesforce.com, Citrix XenApp, and XenDesktop. In addition, many other desktop-like features are included with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 (e.g. Documents to Go and Adobe Reader applications for working with business files and giving presentations). Also available are HTML 5 and Adobe Flash support in the Web browser.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 likewise supports email, contacts, calendar, and social networking apps for LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. The social-centric functionality allows users to merge duplicated contacts from multiple sources, besides staying in touch with the communications and activities of their contacts. Furthermore, Android applications that have been published to BlackBerry App World™ can be run on BlackBerry PlayBook devices.

Users can multi-task between applications, and full support exists for Print to Go, Bluetooth keyboards, and mice. These features provide the full workstation experience on a BlackBerry PlayBook, regardless of where users are located.

HOW DOES BLACKBERRY MOBILE FUSION CENTRALLY MANAGE BLACKBERRY PLAYBOOK AND OTHER MOBILE DEVICES?

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion allows IT administrators to manage their entire mobile infrastructure from one location. Building on the popular BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) technology, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion encompasses unified device inventory, assignments, and IT policy oversight across multiple mobile platforms. The universal device service (UDS) provides support for both iOS and Android-based mobile devices to guarantee that all relevant mobile devices are supported. WHAT ROLE DOES BLACKBERRY BALANCE PLAY IN ENTERPRISES THAT SUPPORT A “BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE” (BYOD) MODEL?

The workforce wants to be able to bring its own devices into the workplace. This approach makes sense for many businesses. Users get to utilize the systems they are most familiar with while, at the same time, enterprises are able to minimize their costs related to mobile computing. Businesses demand control over the IT policies on these devices, in addition to push enterprise applications in a streamlined fashion. This is the situation in which BlackBerry Balance fits. BlackBerry Balance and the BlackBerry Mobile Fusion MDM solution provide a seamless, end-user experience that balances a secure work perimeter with unrestricted personal use of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 tablets. Information technology departments have the proper tools, and users have the freedom to use their mobile devices as the users intended. WHAT ARE SOME ADVANTAGES OF BLACKBERRY MOBILE FUSION VERSUS OTHER MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS?

BlackBerry Mobile Fusion provides a single mobile device administration interface that allows enterprises to support BlackBerry, iOS, and Android-based mobile devices. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion utilizes BlackBerry Balance Technology across BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES v.5.03), BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (v 5.03), and BlackBerry Device Service (BDS) that permit users to connect BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 tablets.

BlackBerry Device Service lets IT administrators provision, activate, and control access to enterprise applications, and audit the usage of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 devices. BlackBerry Mobile Fusion takes advantage of BlackBerry App World to push mandatory applications to groups and users. It alerts groups and users of upgrade notifications for optional applications.

Support is priced per user, not per device. By leveraging existing BlackBerry technical support agreements and volume discounts, total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits are evident. Also, enterprises can rely on BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service to support easily over 10,000 users, and seamlessly scale beyond that number.
