Programme Capriccio for viola solo, op post. No 9 Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) (3 min) Cadenza for viola solo Krzystof Penderecki (b.1933) (7 min) Suite for viola and piano 1919 Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) (33 min) 1. Lento-Allegro-Moderato 2. Allegro ironico 3. Lento 4. Molto vivo Henri Vieuxtemps was a Belgian violinist and composer of the 19th century, came from a well known family of musicians. A successful virtuoso touring throughout Europe and the Americas, Vieuxtemps was famous for performing his own violin concertos, which combined technical mastery and refined compositional craft. Vieuxtemps was also a fine violist and wrote several works for the instrument, including a sonata for viola and piano. The Capriccio in C minor for solo viola concludes a set of six pieces originally written for unaccompanied violin written sometime between 1881 and 1887. The viola has always been one of Penderecki’s favourite instruments and this is shown in his treatment of the instrument, both in chamber and orchestral music. The Viola Concerto (1983) and the Cadenza for viola solo- an appendix to the viola concerto- mark the beginning of Penderecki’s new style of compositions where he combines the avant-garde of his early years with the romantic style he wrote in during the 70’s and early 80’s. One of the most widely known and awarded of Bloch's compositions is his Viola Suite. The manuscript included descriptive titles, which were omitted from the published score. The absent titles of the four movements are: In the Jungle, Grotesques, Nocturne and The Land of The Sun.

St Martin-in-the-Fields has welcomed talented musicians to this central London platform for over 60 years - from highly acclaimed young soloists, to choirs from all over the world; from promising new ensembles, to established professionals. This tradition is supported by the generosity of our performers as well as our audiences. Whilst these concerts are free to all, for those able to give, a suggested donation of £3.50 would be greatly appreciated to help fund all aspects of the work at St Martin’s.
