The Rule of Thirds
Divide your photo into thirds horizontally and vertically. Try to arrange
subjects so that the subject(s) are at intersection
points and lines align with guidelines.

Lines lead the eye towards the subject. Diagonal lines are most interesting.

A pattern can be a particularly effective background to contrast the subject
Selective Focus
Another technique for contrast of subject and background, the subject is in focus and the background is out of focus.
