TS11/15 Total Stations Connect the CS Controller and TS15 with Bluetooth

Summary This guide will show how to connect the TS instrument and CS controller for wireless operation by using a Bluetooth connection. This guide will use the configuration of the TS instrument with a CS controller with the internal Bluetooth. The example will use the Wizards found in Viva SmartWorx on the TS instrument and CS controller.

TS/CS Controller Communication Connecting TS Instrument and CS Controller

Connection Type and References

There are four options to connect a CS controller to a TS15 instrument for communications. The four options are via a cable connection, with a RH15 radio handle, an external radio or a Bluetooth connection. The connection between Bluetooth transmitter in the communications side cover of the TS instrument with the Bluetooth radio contained in the CS will provide a short range wireless connection between the instrument and the controller. This is the convenient connection choice that will eliminate the need to use a cable to establish the connection. The CS and TS have a Class 2 Bluetooth transmitter. This should provide a communication range of approximately 33 feet (10 meters).

Please refer to Leica TS11/TS15 User Manual, Pages 169 – 175 and 192 for various technical specifications for the Bluetooth transmitter in the TS Please refer to Leica CS10/CS15 User Manual, Pages 111 - 121 for various technical specifications for the Bluetooth transmitter in the CS

Please refer to the Leica Viva Series Technical Reference Manual version 3 for:

• Chapter 15, pages 302 – 313 for TPS Connection Wizard • Chapter 16, pages 314 – 320 for CS Connection Wizard

Successful Status Connection on CS

After the Bluetooth search is completed by SmartWorx, all of the available Bluetooth devices within the range of the Bluettoth radio in the CS are displayed. In this case we are looking for a TS instrument. For Leica instruments you will see the name of that instrument as the model and serial number. For example, in the screen shoot below the TS fould is a TS with the serial number of 1610067. Simply highlight the device, in this case TS1610067, and select F1 (Next) to select that device for bluetooth pairing. You should be prompted to enter the Bluetooth password if the two devices have never been previously connected with Bluetooth. When prompted onboard the TS enter the password of 0000 (four zeros). The Bluetooth password for Leica is always 0000.

Once the Bluetooth pairing process is completed between the CS and TS you will be informed that the connection is successful. Please select F1 (Finish) to compete the process.

Now that the connection is complete between the TS and CS, please observe the display on the TS instrument. You will notice that once the connection is made the TS instrument will only display the message “This total station is currently being remotely controlled”. The horizontal angle reading, vertical angle reading, and slope distance (latest measured) of the TS is displayed. However, the keyboard of the TS is fully locked and will not allow any functionality. You will need to put the CS in Sleep mode or power the CS completely in order for the TS to unlock so that you can interface with the TS keyboard. You have successfully connected your TS instrument and CS controller via Bluetooth for wireless operation.
