Muscular System Notes• The body is composed of over 600 muscles

• Muscular System-group of structures that give your body parts the power to move

Page 4: 8 th grade health unit Muscles and Exercise

•3 Kinds of Muscle:•A.Skeletal-attached to bones that enable you to move (voluntary)

Page 5: 8 th grade health unit Muscles and Exercise

•B.Smooth- the muscles found in the organs, blood vessels, and glands (involuntary)•

•C.Cardiac- found only in the walls of the heart (involuntary)

How muscles Work

• Two basic actions account for all muscle movement.

• Extension- the lengthening of muscle fibers • Contraction- is

the shortening of muscle fibers.

Page 7: 8 th grade health unit Muscles and Exercise

Fast and slow twitch muscle fibers

• Fast Twitch- Because fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create fuel, they are much better at generating short bursts of strength or speed than slow muscles. However, they fatigue more quickly.

• Slow Twitch- The slow muscles are more efficient at using oxygen to generate more fuel (known as ATP) for continuous, extended muscle contractions over a long time

Your Muscular System

• What is a muscle strain? This is a muscular problem that can have lasting effects. It is caused by small tear to a muscle or tendon.

• What are two healthy behaviors that can prevent muscular system problems? Maintaining muscle tension by using the muscles, and by wearing protective gear while engaging in sports.

Your Muscles at Work

• Regular physical activity keeps muscles healthy, including the heart

• Muscular Dystrophy is a serious muscular problem in which skeletal muscle tissue gradually wastes away. Eventually people with this can no longer stand or walk.
