by Keith Conning

CONTRIBUTIONS APPRECIATED: - Please send results & stories of

high school athletes and competitions directly to me: Keith Conning, 2235 Browning St., Berkeley, CA 94702 (Ph. 415/849-

From the Editor: - As I stated in last issue, we will be dras-

tically cutting back in our prep coverage in the future and

concentrating more on "out-of-school" competitions. We simply cannot afford (nor do I have the time) to continue covering

prep results in such depth. The fact that I didn't get any violent objections to this change probably indicates that may-

be not as many of our readers follow prep track as we had ori-

ginally thought. This does not mean we'll completely eliminate

it, but as you can see, we're only listing the CIF State Meet

results in this issue, and then concentrating mostly on NorCal

finishers. Sorry, but it's simply a matter of "survival". In

next issue we hope to list the "top 10" seasonal bests for both

boys and girls, assuming Keith is compiling such a list again this year.

Editorial Note: - As we mentioned last issue, we are cutting

back a lot in our coverage of track & field, at least the col-

lege coverage, which is usually covered pretty well in local

newspapers. We'd like to have statistical lists for "open"

(out-of-school) athletes, but of course we need volunteer(s) to do this. If anyone out there is interested in compiling

such a list for the 1980 track season (thru at least the Olym-

pic Trials), please let us know...ideally wed like to go 10-

deep in each event.

In addition, Bell said, the colt is dead fit, the tiring nature of the Belmont surface should stop the speed and work to the advantage of a stretch runner like Rumbo and, in Shoemaker, Rumbo will have the benefit of a master of pace, a man who has won five previous Belmonts, one shy of the race record shared by Eddie Arcaro and one James McLaughlin.

"This is a horse who hasn't usually been close to the pace." Bell said. "Shoe has a way with him, a way of getting him to grab hold of the bit a lot sooner.

"I'm not criticizing Laffit (Pincay), but Bill just seems to fit Rumbo better, just seems to get more run out of him. He's got natural speed and there's really no reason for him to drop so far out of it."

Shoe's win with Rumbo in the Golden State Sires was a reunion of sorts. They had been together before with Rumbo winning two of three starts for Shoe, who then opted for Raise A Man, suggesting that Rumbo was more Dumbo, that while the colt had potential, his eccenlri- n-~::i»rM:G: 1

Pincay got the mount on Rumbo and was up for the second place finishes in the derbies at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Churchill Downs, after which the Bells, who share ownership of Rumbo with the Gayno Stable, opted again for Shoe, who was available because of Raise A Man's disappointing winter campaign.

lengths back at one point in the Golden State Sires but then made a stunning and decisive move that put away a lackluster field. In fact. the most difficult moment came as they passed under the finish line. Rumbo shied from a photographer leaning out under the rail and nearly threw a Shoe.

The veteran jockey was able to laugh about it when reached by telephone Friday. He said Rumbo had now won too much money to be known as Dumbo anymore, that he had matured 50% from what he once was, that it was now possible to get a smooth ride on him and that he believes he has an excellent shot today, though "Codex has shown himself to be a tough horse to get by, the type horse that can be hooked but doesn't give up, a competitor who fights back.''

Asked if he agreed with a theory that Vasquez and Cordero may be ~o involved with each other that they'll set the race up for Rumbo, Shoe laughed and said, "That would be kind of silly. They're professional riders who'll ride their own race. I do think, though, that it's asking a lot of a filly to go that distance and that they'll have to use her up some early to get a position out of that post."

Rumbo will be in the No. 8 post in a field that includes such interesting propositions as Comptroller, the Peter Pan winner: Rockhill Native, fifth as the slightly injured Kentucky Derby favorite; Pikotazo, the undefeated winner of the Mexican Triple Crown, and Super Moment, a latecharging fourth in the Derby, ridden there by Don Pierce and here by Rumba's ex, Pincay.

Ron McAnally, who trains Super Moment for the Elmendorf Farm, said Friday he would not be surprised if
