    The BriefThe objective of this project was to design a new typeface series for Grazia magazine. First

    published in 2010, Regal was later revamped and redesigned for commercial use, evolving

    into a type system with five related superfamilies. According to the brief, this typeface had to

    be elegant, luxurious, sexy, vibrant, reflect the female sensitivity and take into consideration

    a modern woman who is more proud, more connected, more spontaneous, open-minded and

    eager to try a whole host of new products and services.

    The SolutionTargeting this consumption-wise and well-educated woman, required a typeface that is not

    strictly based on classic forms, but incorporates several distinct elements that express a modern womans personality and the products she consumes. In that respect, a whole series

    of 5 related superfamilies was designed, which not only emphasize femininity but also reflect both the romantic as well as the dynamic side of the female personality. For that

    matter, elegant curvy details were introduced in order to create a link to the female figure;

    teardrop terminals which reflect a womans sensitivity; pronounced quirks on upper and lower

    arms for her eyelashes; high-contrast, sharp corners at thinning terminals for her high heels;

    alternate glyphs for the woman who prefers to express her individuality -rather than slavish-

    ly follow trends- by using various accessories which can dramatically change her appearance;

    elegant endings and long curves to reflect her predisposition to dream; bell-shaped serifs

    with an inward rather than outward direction which recall streamlined seventies fashion.

    TechnicalThis series of typefaces is diverse in its construction as it consists of five related superfamilies

    i.e. text, display, finesse, swash and stencil. There is a variety of weights which range from regu-

    lar to ultra black for each one of the five families. These families share common attributes

    but they dier in content according to each ones usage. The whole superfamily type system

    is comprised of 47 weights with an average of 898 glyphs per weight. It supports simultan-eously Latin, Cyrillic and Greek and comes with many alternate glyphs.

    6. In order to give this series a distinct identity, additional characteristics were applied to several letters such as A, M, R, while preserving at the same time their natural features.

    10. Several alternate glyphs, some of them with swash characteristics, were included. When used sparingly they add an extra distinct character with-out compromising its overall upscale attitude.

    whole host of new products and services. Targeting this con-

    sumption-wise and well-educated woman, required a typeface

    that is not strictly based on classic forms, but incorporates sev-

    eral distinct elements that express a modern womans person-

    ality and the products she consumes. Thus, we designed a whole

    series of 6 related superfamilies which not only emphasize fem-

    ininity but also reflect both the romantic as well as the dynamic

    side of the female personality. In that respect, elegant curvy details

    were introduced in order to create a link to the female figure; teardrop

    terminals which reflect a womans sensitivity or the attachment

    to her parfume; pronounced quirks on upper and lower arms

    for her eyelashes; high-contrast, sharp corners at thinning ter-

    minals for her high heels; alternate glyphs for those who prefer

    to express their individuality rather than slavishly follow trends

    and just like accessories dramatically change their appearance;

    Panos Vassiliou is a Kappa Sigma graduate of the Uni-

    versity of Toronto with a major in Applied Science and

    Engineering. In his transition years from engineering to

    typography, he left his high-profile job, got involved with a

    theatre company, founded a design studio and pursued a

    teaching career at George Brown College. A few years later

    he started a publishing company. He designs typefaces since

    1993, including commercial fonts as well as commissions

    from national and international companies such as Ikea,

    Kraft Foods, Financial Times, National Geographic. He

    is regularly invited as a guest speaker to conferences and

    seminars, to speak on typography and related topics. After

    moving to Greece, he started Parachute in 2001 setting

    the base for a typeface library that reflected the works of

    some of the best contemporary Greek designers, as well as

    creatives around the world obsessed with type.He received

    a merit award for his typeface Archive at the national Ebge

    Awards 2004. As early as spring 2004 he released Archive

    Pro, his first opentype font with special typographic features

    and multilingual support for all European languages includ-

    ing Greek and Cyrillic. In 2008, he received a Gold Award

    from the European Design Awards, for the typeface families

    Centro Pro. The following year, he received three Awards

    for Excellence in Type Design from the International Type

    Design Competition Modern Cyrillic 2009 which was held

    in Moscow. In 2010 he received a Silver Award from the

    European Design Awards, for the typeface family Encore

    Sans Pro. The same year he received three awards from

    Granshan 2010 the 3rd International Eastern Type Design

    Competition. In 2011, his new series of typefaces Regal Pro

    was selected for the Creative Review Type Annual 2011.

    Subsequently Regal Pro won an award from the Communi-

    cation Arts Annual Competiotion 2012, while Encore Sans

    Pro was nominated for the German Design Awards 2012.

    Parachute is an independent award-winning type foun-

    dry. It landed in 1999, but it wasnt till 2001 that it started

    operating as a full-scale company. Since then, 13 designers

    have joined in to form a select group of open minded, free

    spirited individuals, all coming from diverse design fields.

    Over the years, Parachute has built a strong network of valu-

    able relationships with customers in Europe, United States,

    Canada, Asia and Australia. Its clientele includes multina-

    tional companies such as Disney, Time Warner, McGraw-

    Hill, Ikea, Vodafone, Nestle and Unilever, advertising and

    branding agencies such as BBDO, McCann Erickson,

    TBWA, MetaDesign, JWT, Interbrand, Wieden+Kennedy,

    publications such as Financial Times, National Geographic,

    Playboy, Elle, FHM, Harpers Bazaar, Max, Grazia, Marie

    Claire, PC Magazine, PC World, as well as many others.

    The year 2003 marked the beginning of a new era for Para-

    chute with the release of an award-winning catalog (Print

    European Design Annual 2004). Since then an emphasis

    was placed on multilingual support and opentype technol-

    ogy.

    Over the last 5 years Parachute has won several major

    international typeface design awards, while its work has

    been featured and extensively presented in design-oriented

    magazines.

    Most Parachute fonts have been designed to oer multilin-

    gual support for major scripts such as Latin, Greek, Cyrillic.

    Latest entries support Arabic as well.
