Livingston Hospice follows a philosophy of compassion that provides care for people in the end stages of terminal illness. Our hospice team

works towards ensuring that the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of both the patient and their family are met with an emphasis on living and maintaining quality of life. The treatment options typically range from pharmacologically alleviating the patient’s pain to helping families cope through the transition with social services and religious counseling.

Additionally, there are complementary therapies, such as massage, aromatherapy and music therapy that can provide further comfort to those who are suffering. A wealth of new research supports the effectiveness of music therapy in improving mental, physical and

emotional health. In addition to reducing anxiety and stress, it has been found that listening to music decreases pain awareness and depression, helps with memory, and provides for enhanced communication with families through nonverbal expression. Research has also shown that music is the last external sensation that registers with a dying patient.

We are pleased to introduce the newest member of the hospice team, Board Certified Music Therapist, Lori Sunshine, MT-BC. Lori has been working as a clinically trained professional music therapist for over 25 years. She sings and plays the harp, piano, guitar and a variety of percussion instruments. She has extensive experience in the medical field using music therapies in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and residences. Her focus is on creating beauty, meaning and comfort for her patients and their families through a therapeutic relationship with music. “I believe in the power of music to heal,” she says. “Even in the most difficult situations I have seen breakthroughs where other modalities have failed.”

Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers recognize the growing need to provide services in the home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly, terminally ill, and homebound.

As community-supported non-profit organizations, they strive to provide professional and supportive home health and hospice care services of the highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of Ventura County to ensure a positive patient outcome.

Livingston explores and develops health-related programs based upon community need and acceptance, economic viability and availability of resources to provide services.

Livingston is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides needed services, including those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients, based upon the available resources of the organization.

The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers. Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of California, certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint Commission. Joint Commission accreditation is regarded as the most comprehensive review of patient safety and quality efforts in the industry. Livingston CareGivers is a non-medical provider of in-home assistance and is CAHSAH certified and not associated with The Joint Commission.

Livingston Quality Care

Quality home healthcare and patient satisfaction have been a Livingston hallmark since 1947. In 1995 Livingston became Ventura County’s first home

healthcare agency to be accredited byThe Joint Commission, accreditation that is regarded as the most comprehensive review of patient safety and quality efforts in the industry.

We also utilize third party providers to monitor patient satisfaction. Strategic Healthcare Programs (SHP) measures Livingston’s performance versus state and national benchmarks. “Re-hospitalization Within 30 days of Start of Care” is a crucial indicator of home healthcare quality. Re-hospitalization rates nationally are as high as 12%. In California we do a little better, 10%. Livingston’s re-hospitalization rate of 8% is better than both.

SHP also evaluates specific programs. Livingston Hospice numbers for Rating of Excellent (73%) and Symptom Management (96%) are significantly higher than both national and statewide averages.

According to Home Health Compare (HHC) 80% of Livingston patients rated Livingston a 9 or 10. Eighty-two percent of Livingston patients would recommend our home health agency to family and friends; this is the highest rating among Ventura County home healthcare agencies.

Internally, quality and patient satisfaction oversight starts with our Board of Directors that includes lead nursing officers of Community Memorial Hospital, Los Robles Regional Medical Center, St. John’s Regional Medical Center, and the Ventura County Health Care Agency Ambulatory Care. Livingston adds additional oversight and expertise by engaging a Professional Advisory Board consisting primarily of doctors and nurses. Our Medical Director, clinical leadership, and Quality Improvement Department have responsibility over Livingston’s day to day commitment to quality care and patient satisfaction supporting our outstanding clinicians and caregivers.

Mother’s Day Luncheon

On April 24 Livingston celebrated its 8th annual Mother’s Day Luncheon honoring Dorcas Thille and remembering Jeanne Maulhardt-Sweeney, two

dedicated mothers who gave tirelessly to their families and community. Tracy Lehr, local news reporter for CBS, ABC, and Fox, emceed this heartfelt event where over 190 guests paid tribute to these two amazing women.

Dorcas is a ranch owner and actively involved community member. Two of her six children, Gordon Kimball and Peter Thille, spoke about Dorcas’ committment to them as a mother, as well as to the agricultural community. Gordon called his mom a “truly remarkable woman” and Peter recalled his mom saying “you make your community better by participating.”

Our In Memory of tribute went to Jeanne Maulhardt-Sweeney. Son Stephen Maulhardt and granddaughter Tessa

Maulhardt paid tribute to Jeanne. Jeanne was on Livingston Hospice care in her final days and Tessa expressed gratitude for Livingston staff that enabled her grandmother to “live out her final days at home in dignity.”

On March 31st, Livingston partnered with Mike McManus who represented the County of Ventura Veteran Services Office to honor Veteran residents

at The Bonaventure Senior Living in Ventura. In addition to The Bonaventure residents, there were 5 Purple Heart recipients, who do not live there, but were also invited to join us and be recognized. Those honored included 16 Veterans, of whom 2 were Purple Heart recipients (one of

them, a double Purple Heart). As part of our We Honor Veterans Program, we had the opportunity to recognize and thank the veterans for their service by presenting them with a certificate and having a pinning ceremony to honor them. One in every four who die today is a veteran. They took care of us and now it is our turn to take care of these courageous men and women who have fought for our country by giving them the quality care they deserve.

A Gift for Later

You’ve made the generous decision to include Livingston in your will, estate plans or another payable on death asset (retirement account,

insurance policy, etc.), but what will happen to the gift after you’ve passed? Many people want to know how the money will be used.

Most commonly people do not give direction on how the funds are to be used, trusting the leadership of Livingston to use their gift wisely. This means the gift is unrestricted and can be used for general purposes.

Sometimes a particular Livingston program like hospice or subsidized care touches a cord with a donor and they would like to direct the funds to something that has meaning to them.

Then there are those who take the long view and want their gift to last in perpetuity. A gift to the Livingston Endowment provides annual income to the agency and the corpus of the gift remains intact.

It’s important that if you have a specific usage for your ultimate gift that you either let us know in advance or include explicit instructions in your will or estate plans. If your gift has complex or uncommon direction it helps if you confer with us while you are still alive so that we can give you assurance that the terms of your gift will be fulfilled.

Longtime volunteer Judy Macy has dedicated 28 years of her life to hospice

volunteer work. After moving from New York to Ojai in 2001, Judy picked up right where she left off when she found Help of Ojai, joining their volunteer team to provide support to patients and families that were facing a terminal illness. Since that time Livingston has adopted the Hospice Volunteer Program at Help of Ojai. 

When asked what she loves most about volunteering for Livingston Hospice Judy states “everything.” Mostly, though, she talks about learning, how every experience is different, and how her work teaches her about seeing death as a rite of passage, not something to fear or try to avoid. Judy seeks opportunities to learn about new ways to make patients more comfortable in their final days. She practices Reiki, or therapeutic touch, which she generously provides to hospice patients who request it.

Leary-Wilde says of her, “Judy exudes an unusual combination of natural effervescence, joie de vivre, and unflappable calm with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Judy is truly one of the shining lights of the Ojai hospice team.”

When she’s not volunteering Judy enjoys tennis, hiking, reading, and in her words, “curiosity and thinking.” She enjoys talking to people about her work with Livingston and using her knowledge to educate others and help them be at peace with death. Another, perhaps unexpected, benefit of her volunteering is the friends she’s made along the way.
