    Product OverviewThis section describes the basic operational essentials for the Serveron On-Line TransformerMonitor TM series and the most common methods of collecting data.

    The On-Line Transformer Monitor technology from Serveron Corp. is a remotely deployedlaboratory grade gas chromatograph which can be safely installed onto an energized or non-energized transformer. The purpose of this monitor is to detect and measure fault gases foundin an electrical power transformers insulating oil. This monitor is designed and constructed toresist environmental conditions relevant to a transformer substation.

    The On-Line Transformer Monitor is a precision device. The heart of the monitor is a speciallyconstructed gas chromatograph designed to measure fault gases. Serveron offers three versionsof products, application dependant. The TM8 measures eight IEEE recommended fault gases:hydrogen (H2), oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4),ethylene (C2H4), ethane (C2H6), and acetylene (C2H2). The TM5 measures five of the eight gases:acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide(CO2). The TM3 measures the three Duval Triangle fault gases: methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4),and acetylene (C2H2). The On-Line Transformer Monitor may be used on conservator or

    nitrogen-blanketed transformers. However, in all cases, the sample of gas is extracted directlyfrom the oil within the transformer.

    Oil is circulated from transformer, to the monitor and then returned to the transformer through-inch O.D. stainless-steel tubing. Stainless-steel tubing is used in conjunction withcompression fittings to minimize the risk of leaks. The monitor is outfitted with an internal gasextraction system which removes dissolved gases from the circulating transformer oil. Heliumis used as a carrier gas to help transport the extracted sample gases through the gaschromatograph. The oil circulation and gas extraction paths in the On-Line TransformerMonitor are shown below.

    Data is collected in the monitor each time a gas chromatograph (GC) analysis is completed. The

    GC analysis takes approximately 43 minutes. Once an analysis has been completed, the optionalServeron Monitoring Service (SMS) or TM View software can be used to view the monitorsdata. The monitor is set up to perform a sample analysis once every four hours (default). Alldata captured during an analysis is stored on compact flash memory within the monitor. Thecompact flash memory holds approximately (2) years of data. The TM View software orServeron Monitoring Service (SMS) will allow the end user to track the gas ppm levels over timeand monitor the gas levels against user defined caution and alarm settings.

    The On-Line Transformer Monitor includes ambient temperature and LoadGuide sensingdevices. An optional Oil Moisture andTemperature sensor is available, along withspare 4-20ma inputs for use with otherexternal devices. External sensor informationcan also be correlated with fault gasinformation to allow a complete diagnosticoverview of the transformers condition.

    Choosing an Oil Supply and Return PortThe On-Line Transformer Monitor removes oil from the transformer, analyzes the oil and thenreturns the oil to the transformer. The locations where the oil is removed (oil supply port) andreturned (oil return port) are vital for the accurate analysis of the gases within your transformer.

    Typically, oil is removed at the top of the transformer and returned to the bottom of thetransformer. The location of the oil supply port should produce a sample that is a well-mixedrepresentation of the transformer oil. In this section we will discuss how to select the locationsand what fittings are required.

    CAUTION: Maximum Oil Inlet Pressure to the monitor is 45 psi (3 bar)

    Oil Supply Port

    An Oil Supply Assy, part # 456-0026-XX, is provided with the TM monitor. The assemblyconsists of a 2 black iron tee, 2 x reducing bushing, plug, ball valve and a NPT xTube fitting (see figure 3). The assembly is integral to the installation and commissioningprocess to help remove air and prevent bubbles from entering the transformer tank when the

    transformer oil supply port is opened.NOTE: Serveron recommends a minimum size of for the oil supply valve.

    NOTE: Serveron does not recommend sampling oil from cooling loops or pressurizedoil passages; doing so may affect the monitor operation and void the warranty.

    It is important to sample oil from a location on the tank where the oil is constantly mixing inorder to provide a well-mixed representation of oil within the transformer. Typically, a top tankvalve is used for the oil supply. For nitrogen-blanketed transformers, the oil supply port mustbe at least 6 below the transformers oil level at all times. If the optional Oil Moisture andTemperature sensor is to be installed, please refer to the Oil Moisture and Temperature sectionbelow for additional configuration of the oil supply port.

    NOTE: For tubing runs that will exceed 40-ft, tubing should be used instead of .

    1) Select an appropriate oil supply port on the transformer.

    2) Verify the port valve is closed and remove any plugs or caps from the end of the port.

    3) Thoroughly clean the inside of the port of any residue or pipe sealing compound.

    4) Determine the thread size of the selected oil supply port.

    5) Purchase the necessary nipple and reducing bushing as required to mountthe 2 Oil Supply Assy, part # 456-0026-XX.

    Note:Depending on the Oil Supply Port valve size, alternate parts can be purchasedinstead of using the 2 assembly provided. If parts are purchased for the transformer

    valve size, they must be black iron, brass or stainless steel and the street side to thetee should be NPT.

    6) Install nipple and reducing bushing as required to the oil supply portusing Teflon tape or pipe dope.

    NOTE: It is important for the street side of the tee be oriented in the vertical direction.

    Bleed Fixture/Oil Return Port

    Typically, the bottom drain valve is used for the oil return port. The return port should not belocated on the transformer cooling system or any pressurized oil passage. An air bleed fixtureand bubble trap is required at the oil return port to allow for air removal during commissioningof the monitor. This fixture is referred to as a Bleed Fixture. The Bleed Fixture assembly isincluded with the TM monitor.

    NOTE: Serveron does not recommend sampling oil from cooling loops or pressurizedoil passages; doing so may affect the monitors operation and void the warranty.

    1) Select an appropriate oil return port on the transformer.

    2) Verify the port valve is closed and remove any plugs or caps from the end of theport.

    3) Thoroughly clean the inside of the port of any residue or pipe sealing compound.

    4) Determine the thread size of the selected oil return port.

    5) Acquire necessary fittings to attach the bleed fixture to the oil return port.

    Note: The Serveron Bleed Fixture is designed to fit on a 2 NPT nipple. When using theServeron Bleed Fixture, adapt the oil return port to accommodate a 2NPT female thread.

    6) Secure the bleed fixture to the oil return port using Teflon tape or pipe dope.

    Choosing a Mounting LocationThe monitor should be located in a position where it will not interfere with transformermaintenance or access requirements. The front of the monitor must be accessible forcommissioning and maintenance and leave adequate room behind the monitor to access thejunction box and helium cylinder. The location should also minimize the supply and returntubing runs. There are two mounting types for the TMx monitors; pedestal mounting stand or

    transformer tank-mounting kit.

    Items to consider when choosing a location for the monitor are:

    Location of oil supply and oil return ports

    Location of power supply

    Transformer maintenance points

    Access to the monitor

    Mounting of the monitor stand

    NOTE: The monitor must be mounted and operated in an upright position. Failure to doso will void the warranty.

    Mounting Stand

    The Mounting Stand is a post style, requiring some assembly, and is intended to be secured to aconcrete pad. The hardware required for assembly and fastening to the concrete pad areincluded. Figure 5 illustrates a typical mounting. See figures 9 and 10 for mounting and layoutdimensions. For stand assembly, refer to the On-Line Transformer Monitor Installation Guide,part # 810-1644-XX.

    Mounting the Stand to a Concrete Pad

    1) Position the stand in the predetermined mounting location.

    2) Using the stand as a template, mark four holes on theconcrete pad.

    3) Remove the stand and drill four 3/8-inch x 3-inch deepholes in the marked locations.

    4) Insert the four 3/8-inch concrete anchors included with thestand into the holes.

    5) Position the stand over the four mounting bolts and securethe stand, checking to make sure the stand is plumb andlevel.

    6) Tighten retaining nuts onto the concrete anchors.

    Transformer or Wall Mounting

    The transformer mounting kit includes the necessary hardware to mount the monitor, junctionbox, helium dyer and helium cylinder to unistrut (unistrut is not included). Serveronrecommends using1 5/8-inch deep-channel unistrut to mount the monitor and its components. Two 4-foot lengthsof unistrut are required. The figures below are examples of tank and wall mount applications.

    Mounting to the Transformer or Wall

    1) The bottom rung of unistrut must be mounted:

    a. A minimum of 40-inches above grade if the helium cylinder will be secured tothe unistrut.

    b. A minimum of 12-inches above grade or water threat if helium will not besecured to the unistrut.

    2) Secure the bottom unistrut rung in the predetermined mounting location inaccordance with the appropriate height suggested in item 1.

    3) Measure up from the center of the bottom rung 19.85-inches and mark the mounting

    location for the second rung.4) Secure the top unistrut rung.

    Providing powerThe monitor has a built-in AC to DC power converter and surge protector capable of utilizing115 or 230 VAC 15% (50/60Hz); 6A max. @ 115 V; 3A max @ 230V.

    NOTE: Serveron recommends installing a properly rated and marked switch or circuitbreaker in close proximity to the monitor as a mains voltage disconnect device.

    GroundingIt is important that a proper ground is attached to the mounting structure whereas the TMx caseis grounded. (I.E. the unistrut rungs of the pedestal pole mount or the transformer mount).

    LoadGuideThe On-line Transformer Monitor LoadGuide can be used to correlate transformer load totransformer gassing. The LoadGuide sensor consists of a current clamp that is placed over a 0 to5 amp high or low side CT. It is important that the CT give a good representation of totaltransformer load. Transformer load will be displayed on a relative scale with 0% indicating no

    load and 100% indicating full load. The standard cable length is 30-ft. Additional cable of 22AWG or larger can be added to the LoadGuide sensor cable if required.

    Oil Moisture and Temperature (optional)An optional sensor is available to provide oil moisture in parts per million (ppm) or as percentrelative saturation (%RS) and oil temperature (C). Depending on the location of the sensor, theoil temperature can be representative of top oil temperature. It is recommended that the OilMoisture and Temperature Sensor be installed on the top valve of the transformer. Thenecessary adapters are provided with the sensor to install it at the Oil Supply Assy. If thesensor will be installed in an alternative location, a reducing bushing made from black iron,

    brass or stainless steel may be required.

    Communication Interface & ProtocolThe On-Line Transformer Monitor offers a range of communication options. The monitor cancommunicate over multiple interfaces simultaneously. The different communication optionsare as follows:

    Internal modem - connects to any standard analog phone line (POTS).

    RS-232 - (TMCOM1) connection is provided to allow serial communications with anexternal computer as well as interface to a cellular or external modem.

    RS-485 - (TMCOM2) connection is provided.

    Ethernet - connection can be configured as DHCP or a static IP address. The monitor issupplied with a fiber interface. A copper interface can be purchased using Serveronpart # 700-0052-XX.

    Modbus or DNP3 - connection can be configured over all hardware interfaces includingEthernet, RS-232, RS-485 and modem. For more information regarding theseprotocols, please contact Serveron Technical Support.

    Power, Sensor and Communications CablesThe standard monitor package includes (3) short cables used in conjunction with the ServeronJunction Box. If longer cables are required, 23-ft cables can be purchased as an option usingServeron part # 900-0063-XX. Typically, these cables are terminated at the junction box terminalstrip that is included with the standard monitor package or at the transformer control cabinet.If the junction box was not purchased, a terminal strip will be required for cable termination. A

    Helium CylinderThe helium cylinder should be securely mounted to the On-line Transformer Monitor mountingstand or some other permanent surface. A mounting bracket that meets all compressed gascylinder restraining requirements is provided. Serveron also provides the necessary 1/8-inchO.D. stainless-steel tubing to connect the helium cylinder to the monitor.

    Ordering HeliumHelium carrier gas is vital to the performance of the chromatograph within the On-LineTransformer Monitor. Using helium that does not meet the described specifications willsubstantially reduce the life of the monitor and void the warranty.

    Stainless Steel Tubing and FittingsStainless-steel tubing is used to connect the monitor to the transformer for circulating thetransformer oil for measurement. The amount of tubing required depends on the location of themonitor relative to the valves on the transformer.

    Note: Stainless-steel is the only material that should be used. The use of any other tubingmaterial will void the warranty of your monitor.

    It is recommended that the tubing between the transformer and the monitor be installed as onecontinuous piece, reducing the possibility of oil leaks.

    Listed below are items to consider when choosing where to route the tubing to the monitor:

    Make sure tubing will not interfere with regular maintenance of the transformer.

    Avoid long, unsupported tubing runs.

    Route tubing so that it will not be tripped over or damaged by activities in the vicinity ofthe transformer.

    If the length of the oil supply or return path exceeds 20-feet, a 1/4-inch stainless steelunion will have to be purchased and on site at the time of installation.

    It is recommended that your tubing be secured every 2 - 4 feet using stainless steel cableties or other adequate clamps.

    Carefully measure the predetermined tubing route from the transformer oil supply port tothe monitor. Take into consideration any corners or other obstacles that may add to theoverall length of tubing. Tubing is typically supplied in 20-foot lengths and will require aunion if any section exceeds 20-feet. Determine the number of 20-foot lengths and unionsrequired for the installation. If the tubing length exceeds 40-feet per run, 3/8tubing shouldbe used.

    Tubing and fittings must be on site the day of installation.

    Site ChecklistThe following is a checklist that will help ensure that all the proper steps have been completed.

    Customer Information form filled out and returned to Serveron. A location for mounting the On-Line Transformer Monitor has been identified, and

    the monitor mounting stand is secured in place.

    The transformer oil supply valve (On-Line Transformer Monitor oil supply port) and thetransformer oil return valve (On-Line Transformer Monitor oil return port) have beenselected.

    Bleed fixture and oil supply fittings installed (additional fittings required if OilMoisture sensor is to be installed).

    Power is available at the installation site for the monitor. Communication is available to the monitor. A cylinder of chromatographic grade helium (99.9999% pure with < 0.2 ppm of H2O)

    is on site.

    A 0-5 Amp CT has been identified for the LoadGuide sensor. All shipped items and optional accessories have been located. Electrical conduit and enclosures have been installed (as required). 1/4 (or 3/8 as required) 0.035 wall thickness 316-SS, 20-ft lengths onsite, enough

    for each tubing run.
