Equipping the Saints
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evan-gelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” (Ephe-sians 4:11-12). The Greek word translated perfecting in the King James Version can also be translated “complete furnishing” or “equipping.” Thus, the theme for this year’s convention—Equipping the Saints.
Those who are speaking during this meeting will be developing the theme in the framework of the text. We prayerfully anticipate them stress-ing the relevancy of Paul’s words and leading us in making practical application of those words in our own lives.
Why is this theme so vital for our denomination? Let me suggest a few reasons:
• Every believer has a job. It is apparent from the apostle’s words that God expects every follower of Christ to be actively engaged in the work of the ministry. There should be no spiritually unemployed!
• Every job is important. Paul did not list a single frivolous role in the body of Christ. As in the human body, so also in the church—there are no unimportant parts.
• Every believer must be qualified. While God sovereignly bestows spiritual gifts to every Christian, it is incumbent upon the individual believer to take the initiative to fully develop those gifts. That’s where the equipping process comes into play.
• The greatest abilities are availability and dependability. No matter how gifted a disciple may be, his ability is of little use unless he can be counted upon to show up and do his job.
I pray this convention will serve as a catalyst to motivate our denomi-nation to better equip and more fully engage every Free Will Baptist in the work of the ministry and as a result, build up the body of Christ.
Keith Burden, CMP Executive Secretary
