2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Stepping Forward in Faith: Grace in Action

Thank you to all who have so generously given to the

2020 Bishop's Annual Appeal!

Your gift to the Bishop's Annual Appeal helps

support initiatives, services and the spiritual needs of all, among them,

the work of Catholic Charities and the needs of those

impacted by COVID-19. Through prayer and reflection, please consider a

sacrificial gift to this year s appeal and give to the best

of your means. With many people impacted by COVID-19, it is important

to bring people the opportunity to grow closer to Christ and

see the work of God in their midst. All funds raised through the Bishop s

Annual Appeal are used to support the ministries and programs

of the Diocese of Metuchen. There is still an opportunity to participate by

responding to the most recent mailing or by making an online

pledge at https://diometuchen.org/ways-to-give.

Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Metuchen are still enrolling!

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Metuchen will safely

welcome students back to school and are now enrolling for

fall 2020.

With small class sizes and a sensible approach, Catholic

schools in the diocese are ready to shift, no matter what the

school year may bring.

For more information about enrolling your child or to find a

Catholic school near you, please

visit diometuchen.org/schools

or call (732) 562-2446.

the Sacrament prior to attending the required Baptism Preparation

Class, which is held the 2nd Tuesday of January, April, July and

October.

THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Couples contemplating the

celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony are asked to contact the

canónicos antes de poder fijar la fecha de boda. Una sesión de la

Facilitación de la comunicación abierta entre pareja, comprensión y

RECOMMENDED READING

The presence of the Catholic Church in the

United States reaches back to the founding

days of our country through the leadership of

Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the

United States. His story, like other stories at the start

of the chapters in theUnited States Catholic

Catechism for Adults, gives us a glimpse into the lives

of Catholics who lived out their faith throughout our

country's history. Each chapter in the United States

Catholic Catechism for Adults includes stories,

doctrine, reflections, quotations, discussion questions,

and prayers to lead the reader to a deepening faith.

TheUnited States Catholic Catechism for Adultsis an

excellent resource for preparation of

catechumens in the

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

and for ongoing Catechesis of adults.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER

UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

August 2, 2020

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Many people in our world are hungry and thirsty. This

hunger and thirst go well beyond physical needs for food,

security, and shelter. Many are emotionally and spiritually

parched, too. Behind every act of violence is a soul who

hungers. People live with relationships that actually starve

them. They are abused, exploited, disrespected, laughed

at, and marginalized. There is a lot of confusion and inner

pain that needs to be acknowledged and expressed. We

all long to be understood and loved, even when our inner

demons or who I am make it difficult to be. Do you live with

inner confusion and pain? Folks often wander through life

without any real direction or purpose and take their cues

from what seems satisfying or popular at the moment. The

deeper dots of our lives can easily remain unconnected,

and we can find ourselves without grounding, purpose, or

real happiness. Life becomes shallow and without real

purpose as we hunger and thirst for an ultimate love.

It’s easier to see the physical hungers and thirsts. We try

to respond to these as best we can. Much more needs to

be done. With all that God’s earth can provide, nobody

ought to face sleep at night with a belly that’s empty. It’s

sinful. It’s unjust. But isn’t all hunger unjust? It doesn’t

need to be, and it should not be. Just as no one ought to

be physically hungry and thirsty, there is really no need to

be emotionally or spiritually deficient either. If we have

more privileges at our fingertips, it is easier to try to satisfy

our emotional and spiritual hungers and thirst by acting on

impulse or self-indulgence, carelessly following passions,

or by seeking self-destructive ways to dull the ache of

emptiness.

Folks need to know where to look for nourishment and

need the right friends to help them find it. We may not

think that we have enough to respond to and to satisfy all

of the needs, but we do. It doesn’t take much. Five loaves

and two fish provided for a huge crowd. With God, all

things are possible. Our faith provides the direction for

where God’s children must go to find the nourishment they

seek. It also tells us how to structure life so that justice and

equity can be a reality for all. It also tells us how to

respond to pain, sinfulness, and confusion.

Come to the water and then help another get there.

The Pastor's Pen

Dear Friend,

What does hope in God do for humanity?

Hope shines brightest when the hour is darkest.

Hope movates when discouragement comes.

Hope energizes when the body is red.

Hope sweetens while bi"erness bites.

Hope sings when all melodies are gone.

Hope believes when evidence is eliminated.

Hope listens for answers when no one is talking.

Hope climbs over obstacles when no one is helping.

Hope endures hardship when no on is caring.

Hope smiles confidently when no one is laughing.

Hope reaches for answers when no one is asking.

Hope presses toward victory when no one is

encouraging.

Hope dares to give when no one is sharing.

Hope in God brings the victory when no one is

winning.

Let us pray for Hope and

never lose heart.

STEWARDSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS:

AUGUST 2, 2020

“Jesus said to them, ‘There is no need for them

to go away; give them some food yourselves’.”

(Matthew 14:16)

This is what Jesus said right before he fed

thousand men. How o%en do we really place our

trust in Jesus when the situa*on looks grim?

With Jesus, no gi% is too small or insignificant

when offered with love. But, we have to do our

part. We should trust that Jesus will provide

all that we need. We need to believe that

Jesus has a be2er plan in store for us.

Pray for vocations!

Bishop James F. Checchio recently ordained four men, who

are preparing for eventual service to the priesthood,

as deacons during a Mass of the Rite of Ordination.

Please pray for Deacon Jun Joseph “Jay” Alquiros,

Deacon Ariel Bautista, Jr.,

Deacon Timothy Eck II, and

Deacon Gregory Zanetti,

as they prepare for the priesthood and

please pray for a continual

increase of vocations in our Church.

O God, Father of all Mercies,

Provider of a bountiful Harvest,

send Your Graces upon those

You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor;

preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of

you.

Open the hearts of Your children

that they may discern Your Holy Will;

inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves

to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ.

Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in

life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth.

Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary,

all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers

and grant Your Church's needs,

through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
