I have proposed a complete design for the penthouse bar within the complex, Riverside Crescent. The design follows the briefs requested style of elegant, upmarket, vibrant and exclusive. The design is based around the New York’s penthouse bars, lounge bars and speakeasys; a style which will appeal to the sophisticated and design-aware target market. Included within the design is a feature/ focal point, bespoke bar- explained further in the design rationale.

Inspiration Initial Idea

Inspiration for the logo came from the shape of the river which runs

alongside River Crescent; as well as common cocktail components-

cocktail glasses and ingredients. It was decided from the beginning the

logo would be black and white to keep it simple, clear and professional.

The initial idea combined all the inspiration in one, using the cocktail

glass to replace the letter ‘I’, the lemon to replace the letter ‘c’ and the

form of the river to underline the name of the cocktail bar.

The river form was next moved to above the text as the shape of the river fits well with the form of the cocktail glass. Using all three forms seemed

cluttered and not simple enough.

Removing the river form made the most sense as the connection between the river and other forms isn’t completely obvious. This simplified the

design and two options were created. The second option has a larger cocktail glass which joins the top of the logo however, this appeared too bold and

over bearing. Therefore, the first option was chosen.

Experimentation took place with different fonts

however the original design was initially chosen.

1. The first option is italic which clashes with

the upright forms and makes it unclear that

these are signifying letters.

2. The second option is bold and clear however

it does not suggest an elegant, upmarket and

professional cocktail bar.

3. The third option is not bold enough and

therefore the font contrasts with the forms

used.

4. The initial final (original) option works

perfectly as the font is clear, flows with the

cocktail inspired forms and suggests an

elegant, upmarket cocktail bar. This font is

called ‘Raleway’.

The initial final design was transferred to white on black to show how this logo can work in different colour ways. The black background suggests a

more, sumptuous, dramatic cocktail bar which is the style to be portrayed through the interior design therefore, this is the chosen logo.

This design has large gaps in between and around the words; therefore, further experimentation took place.

This version was trying to make to most of the square space by enlarging the font however this split up the word ‘Waterside’ which made it unclear to

communicate and looks a mess.

Finished Logo Design

The finished design is similar to the initial chosen design however much more compact (rectangular rather than square) making it more aesthetically

pleasing and making the most of the space. The form of the lemon was also shrunk to be better communicated as a letter. This shape logo will also work

much better on signage, menus etc.

from the rest of the bar. This area is quite private

and could easily be separated. When not booked

the area can be used for all guests.

Rationale Waterside Crescent is one of seven penthouses within the new River Crescent development, Nottingham. Property

prices within the development range from £200k to £600k making the target market middle to upper class. The

target market is ‘sophisticated’ and ‘design-aware’ and obviously prefer a contemporary style having bought

property in a brand-new development. The client has requested an elegant, upmarket theme, based around the

world’s most exclusive cocktails. The theme must also be vibrant and exclusive to suit the clientele. The entire

design meets DDA Requirements.

The name of the bar ‘Waterside Crescent’, is a mixture of the street name (Waterside Way) and the residence

name (River Crescent). A simple black and white colour scheme was chosen to create the logo to make it

professional and sophisticated. (Fontsquirrel, 2010) The decided clear font is Raleway (2010) which expresses the

upmarket and New York inspired theme. The logo can be used in two colour ways, black on white, or white on

black. Simple cocktail related forms are used to replace certain letters.

Through researching the origin of famous cocktails, it was found most had a connection to New York City. The

word ‘cocktail’ was created by ‘The Balance and Columbian Repository’ Magazine (Hudson) therefore, New York

penthouse bars, speakeasys and lounge bars became the inspiration for the design of Waterside Crescent. Ideas

were taken from their dark colour schemes, dark wood and large quantities of textured textiles. Some inspiration

(such as coloured lighting) was taken from the Caribbean as many people associate cocktails with being on holiday.

At the entrance of the bar will be an antique drinks trolley where customers can check reservations or be shown

to a table. Artwork such as the world map will accessorise the interior and fit the theme ‘the world’s most exclusive

cocktails’. Two antique style mirrors help reflect the coloured light and add to the atmosphere.

The client requested that the main design feature and focal point would be the cocktail bar, displaying a large

range of cocktail ingredients, spirits and glasses. The bar design incorporates immaculate materials; made mainly

from a black granite and hammered brass sheets for a slightly industrial (New York inspired) finish. Large,

smoked glass shelves hung behind the bar are lit by specialist, colour changing lighting, the same lighting lights

up the front of the bar. Glasses will be hung from a suspended level above the bar. Three coloured pendants will

also hang from here to light up the bar top.

Waterside Crescent is split into two zones which altogether amount to seating for 50 people:

• The main bar area- open to all residents of River Crescent.

• The VIP Zone- which can be hired out for events. When not in use this area will be open to all residents of

River Crescent as usual.

The main bar area consists of two lounge areas/ booths. The booths are surrounded by net curtains which create

privacy from the traffic flow of staff between the storage room and the bar. The net curtains are lit by LED strips,

creating a wall of light. Spotlights also light up ‘Booth 1’ to create a vibrant atmosphere. There are also 4 bar tables

in this zone.

The VIP zone has its own smaller bar which will only be used when this area has been hired for a private function.

There is a large lounge area at one end of this zone; which is surrounded by a curtain wall and lit up by coloured

spotlights to add luxury and drama to the sumptuous design. This area also includes two bar tables and another

smaller lounge area.

A brown suede wallpaper is used in many areas which adds more luxury and texture to the design. Elsewhere walls

are painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Jitney’, an antique- beige.

A dark walnut floor and wood panel effect wallpaper are inspired by New York speakeasys.

As well as curtain walls, all glass doors and windows are covered by an antique white chiffon curtain, allowing light

to flow in yet adding to the numerous other textiles within the design.

Coloured LED lights in the interior will be coordinate to create the same atmosphere throughout. Glass, coloured

feature pendants inspired by Caribbean style will be hung over every table and the bar. Pineapple shaped pendants

will be used over the small bar to add some fun to the interior.

The terrace will also be separated into two zones by artificial green walls. These can be moved aside when the VIP

area is not in use. Patio heaters will also be used outside so that the terrace can be used even through colder

months.

The ordinary area will have different sized contemporary, black bar tables- which complement the interiors dark

colour scheme.

The VIP area will have two 6-seater sofas, creating more of a premium, lounge area. All together the terrace will

seat 20 people as requested. Both areas are lit by LED cubes; Larger ones around the edge of the balcony and

smaller ones on each table. The coloured lighting will match the interior, creating a connection between the two.

Conclusion:

• The design meets the requirements and desired style stated in the brief.

• A feature bar has been included.

• The required seating capacity is provided.

Brand identity The cocktail bar name- Waterside Crescent, is a combination of the street name (Waterside Way) and residence name (River Crescent).

Inspiration & Target Market Property prices within the River Crescent residence

range from £200k to over £600k making it a very middle

to upper class target market. The property prices

suggest an older generation who have worked for many

years to be able to afford these properties. The

residence is highly contemporary making it essential

that this style must be present in the design to appeal

to the target market. The clientele is described as

‘sophisticated’ and ‘design-aware’.

The theme of the cocktail bar is based around the

world’s cocktails and their origin. The word ‘cocktail’

originated from New York; and many famous cocktails

are connected to New York.

The style of the bar is inspired by New York’s penthouse

bars, lounge bars and speakeasys as these styles match

the clients request for an elegant, upmarket theme.

Many people also connect cocktails with being on

holiday and therefore touches of the Caribbean are

shown throughout the design through coloured lighting

and bright coloured light pendants; making the bar

vibrant and exclusive.

Interior Concept

The interior concept includes layers of textiles and textures to create a sumptuous and sophisticated atmosphere. Curtained- walls add to the luxury

and drama which are lit by LED strips and coloured spotlights. String curtains create privacy from the staff traffic flow in some areas; without losing

light/ space. A suede wallpaper is used throughout adding to the luxury. Furnishings are mostly black velvet or dark wood, with touches of gold to add

elegance. The cocktail bar will have a ‘VIP Zone’ which can be hired for events (shown on the right), when not in use this section can be used as normal.

Bespoke Bar The main feature in Waterside Crescent is the cocktail bar featuring a large range of cocktail ingredients, spirits

and cocktail glasses. The bespoke bar will be designed and made to fit using high quality materials. The bar and

counter behind are made from black granite. The counter on top of the bar and suspended level above will be

covered in hammered brass sheets to add a slightly industrial touch to the design. The suspended level has

hanging glass holders on the underside as well as three coloured pendants. Smoked glass shelves are hung behind

the bar with the range of cocktail ingredients; lit by coloured LED strips. LED strips also light up the front of the bar.

Exterior Concept The exterior design consists of all matching, rattan, bar furniture- all dark in colour to match the interiors dark colour scheme. The furniture is all

contemporary and matches the style of the residence building. The outside is also separated into zones so that if the ‘VIP Zone’ is hired out, it has

access to an outdoor lounge area. When not in use, the division artificial green walls can be moved aside. Large light up cubes are placed around the

edge of the balcony, and smaller ones on each table; creating a vibrant atmosphere. Contemporary wall lights also light up the exterior.

Materials & Finishes The materials used within the design are very dark and sumptuous.

Many textiles and textures are used throughout the interior to add to

the high quality and luxurious atmosphere; this includes a brown suede

wallcovering, and curtained walls in certain areas. String curtained walls

are also used to create privacy around some seating areas- adding even

Lighting

Lighting is a key aspect of this design to create the

desired ‘vibrant’ atmosphere. Coloured LED strips and

spotlights are used throughout to light up curtain walls

and bar shelving throughout. All these LED’s can be

coordinated to match in colour.

A mix of feature light pendants are used over tables

and the two bars. The pendants are all vibrant colours

to add a touch of Caribbean style as many people

associate cocktails with being on holiday. Two

pineapple shaped pendants will be hung over the small

bar to add some fun to the interior.

Outdoor lights include large light up cubes which will

be placed around the edge of the balcony and smaller

cubes for on each table. Both cubes can be set to the

same colour as the interior LED’s; tying the interior and

exterior atmospheres together. Contemporary wall

lights also light up the outside area.

Accessories The interior accessories are traditional and add to the classic,

luxury finish. Artwork is very dark/ neutral in colour. A piece of art

representing the world map add to the ‘famous cocktails from

around the world’ theme and two gold framed mirrors contribute

to the reflection of coloured light in such a dark colour scheme.

An antique drinks trolley will be used at the entrance of the

restaurant where customers will check their table reservations.

Outdoor Accessories include contemporary patio heaters; making

the outdoor area more useable in colder months; and three

artificial green walls, separating the two zones.
