BY JUDY NELSONToday, global contro-versy rages over theplanting ofGeneticallyEngineered (GE)crops. The debatefocuses on thepotential health andenvironmental ramifi-cations of GeneticEngineering (GE). Nolong-term safetystudies have been

done on GeneticallyEngineeredOrganisms (GEOs).GE is the process offorcefully insertingthe DNA of onespecies into the DNAof another species tocreate in it a trait for-eign to it. GE cross-

es species barriers. Itis NOT found innature. It is NOThybridization. In thecase of current GEcrops (corn, soy,cotton, canola, sugarbeets, and alfalfa),the two primary GEtraits created are tol-erance of herbicidesand production ofpesticides. Thismeans GE crops canbe sprayed withglyphosate(Roundup®) and theywill not die, or theywill produce in everycell of the plant apesticide, Bt-toxin.In some crops, bothtraits have beencreated.

To promote GE,the biotech industry

argues that GE willresult in decreasedusage of herbicidesand pesticides.However, what hasresulted sincewidespread plantingof GE crops beganin 1996 refutesthis argument.

SUPER WEEDS ANDSUPER BUGS

Over time, GE cropshave resulted in anincreased use ofherbicides and usagecontinues to esca-late. According to2004 USDA statistics,during the first 13years of planting GEcrops, 383 millionmore pounds ofherbicides wereused. From 2007-

2008, the usage ofRoundup was up31%. This overuse ofherbicides on GEcrops has resulted inthe emergence ofherbicide-tolerantweeds.

To combat these“super weeds,”farmers haveincreased their useof more toxicherbicides like 2,4-D

(a component ofAgent Orange) by237%. In addition, theNational Academy ofSciences found thatfarmers planting GEsoy use two to fivetimes more pesti-cides than farmersplanting non-GE soy.

Other environ-mental effectsinclude the emer-gence of “super

insects” immune tothe Bt-toxin pro-duced in GE crops;contamination ofnon-GE cropsthrough crosspollination; harm tobeneficial insects;and the emergence ofa new, unknownpathogen in the soil.All of these arereasons to seriouslyquestion GE as

“good for theenvironment.”

The long-termenvironmental effectsof GE are unknown.Once GEOs arereleased into theenvironment, there isno known technologyto reverse them.Future generationswill bear theconsequences oftoday’s GE.

What can youdo? Stop supportingcompanies responsi-ble for GE. Demandlabeling of productsthat contain GEOs.You have the “Rightto Know” whereGEOs are hidden soyou can makeinformed choices.
