I opened the desk drawer of the empty office I was about to occupy and found a short note written by my predecessor in that church and the note said “I feel like I have been running two steps ahead of an avalanche since the day I got here.” She did not mean that in a negative way either. It was a reference to the intensity of the ministry that she had been a part of for several years. The church was growing at an average of 100 members per year, there was a preschool with 200 children in attendance and a community that was growing faster than the city could manage. That congregation continues to be like that to this day. Those preschool kids now make up the 300+ youth department of the church and the church is still bursting at the seams. I found myself using that phrase to describe the first few days of 2007. We are already off to an intense beginning of this year. By the time you get this newsletter the church family will have experienced two funerals and two baptisms; endings and beginnings in the Kingdom of God. Death which is really an end that begins the new transition to our next life and baptism which is a sign of ending life alone and becoming a part of the community of faith. January 1 st is really just another day. We humans have created an artificial marker of beginning again, starting over, making resolutions, changing our lives. I realize that the feeling of “running two steps ahead of an avalanche” suits me just fine most of the time. It is a life I have created by my choices. At the same time it is not reflective of the kind of life that any of us should live constantly. What would this newsletter, a newspaper, a magazine, a card, an e-mail be without the white space? Just a blur of print and pictures. There has to be white space on the page, a place where there is no color, no words, no movement or action. White space is critical for making sense of the rest of the page. Like- wise, our lives require such space, blank canvas on which there is nothing, time spent being still, being quiet, listening to God, listening to each other, simply being present. Before you spend lots of time and energy thinking about all the things you will resolve to do this year, don’t forget to think about what you will NOT do. Make some white space in your life, time to be still, to be quiet, to listen. After all, it takes a lot of energy to stay two steps ahead of an avalanche!

Dear AUMC Members: Thank you so much for your contribution of $3,609.22 to COAT. It is being used to assist those in need in our area. Your con-tribution will be applied to the operation of the COAT community food bank as well as in our voucher program for special needs such as utilities, life-saving prescription refills, and rent.

Your contributions are making a vital difference for many people in the Archdale-Trinity area.

At this time of Thanksgiving, we wanted to write and thank you for your gifts, which help us to provide this service. Your con-tributions make a difference to those who need support in a time of crisis. Our staff is also encouraged and nurtured by the knowledge that you are supporting the importance of spiritual care in the hospital setting. Thank you for partnering with us in this important ministry.

Sincerely, Judy Haughee-Bartlett Staff Chaplain

Archdale Elementary School

To the Members of Archdale United Methodist Church;

Please accept this letter as our thanks on behalf of the families that you were able to sponsor during the Christmas season that have a child who attend Archdale Elementary School. We were blessed again this year by many local churches and agencies that called to offer their support and were honored that you were able to help us fill a great need. Through Kay Nichols’ Sunday school class and the Youth Group (at the last minute no less!) 6 children will have gifts for Christmas!

Again, thank you for your many blessings now and throughout the entire school year and we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely, Candace Call, Principal Sally Voelkert, School Counselor
