1 The Cat 3508B Diesel Engineis a four-stroke design and useslong, effective power strokes formore complete fuel combustion andoptimum efficiency. The 3508B isdesigned with large displacementand a low speed rating for longhours of service between scheduledoverhauls and lower operating costs.

■ The 30 percent torque riseprovides high lugging forceduring dozing and acceleration inhigh rimpull conditions. Thetorque curve effectively matchesthe transmission shift points toprovide maximum efficiency andfaster cycle times.

■ Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) isa proven high-pressure, directinjection fuel system thatelectronically monitors operatordemands and sensor inputs tooptimize engine performance.

■ Advanced Diesel EngineManagement (ADEM) systemcontrols the fuel injectorsolenoids to start and stop fuelinjection. This system providesautomatic altitude compensation,air filter restriction indication,and will not allow the engine tofire until it has oil pressure,acting as a cold start protectionand a form of pre-lube.

■ Rimpull Control System (RCS)allows the operator to select fromfour preset maximum rimpullsettings available in first gearsettings (80,65,50 and 35percent).

■ Axle-shaft brakes require lessforce by operating on the lowtorque side of the axle. Combinedwith improved axle oil circulationfor increased cooling, the oil-enclosed, multiple-disc brakedesign improves durability.

4 Impeller Clutch Torque Converter(ICTC) combined with the RimpullControl System (RCS) allows theoperator maximum flexibility inmodulating rimpull.

■ The impeller clutch torqueconvertor uses the left brakepedal to modulate rimpull from100 to 20 percent for reduced tireslippage. After 20 percent isachieved, further pedal travelapplies the brake.

Structures are designed to helpimprove visibility, stability, bladecapacity and durability, without addingweight to the machine. These featuresprovide the strength expected inCaterpillar structures.

Castings in the engine-end frame areused in critical high-stress areas to helpspread the load and reduce the numberof parts. The casting for the reartrunnion mount also serves as an enginemount, which provides a load path forthe weight and torque of the engine totravel down to the trunnion and then onthrough to the axle. Other castings usedin the engine-end frame include: fronttrunnion mounts, steering cylinderbrackets, articulation stops and locklink.

1 Full box-section rear frame absorbsshock loads and twisting forcessolidly, supporting the driveline forrigid component alignment. Theframe is now extended furtherforward, which improves rail to hitchstrength.

2 Heavy-duty, box-section front frameprovides maximum structural strengthto resist twisting loads experiencedduring dozing.

3 Upper and lower hitch pins pivot ondouble-tapered roller bearings and areshaped to direct stress away from theend of the weld, resulting in asmoother transition of stress loads.The hitch is open for access.

4 Spread-hitch design helps square upthe frame and provides moreclearance for hydraulic lines. Doubletapered roller bearings and hardenedpins resist both horizontal andvertical loads to increase life. Thespread-hitch also makes serviceaccess easier.

Engine and transmission mounts aredesigned to use mushroom and cup-shaped ISO mounts, reducingcomponent vibration and sound levels.The engine mounts directly to the rearcross member, simplifying andimproving load transfer structure.

1 Two separate, hydraulic systems.One system is for the brakes andsteering while the other is forimplement and hydraulically-drivenengine cooling fan. The benefits ofthe separate hydraulic systems areincreased cooling and elimination ofcross-contamination. Caterpillar’sXT-3 and XT-5 hose and reliablecomponents help reduce the risk ofleaks and blown lines, helping protectthe environment.

2 Blade control. Armrest-mountedcontrol lever sends signals to a pilotvalve for tilt/tip control and to a mainvalve for lift/lower control.

■ Tandem gear pumps provide hydraulic flow for the lift, tilt and tip functions. The circuit is well balanced to provide control when all functions are used simultaneously.

■ Well-proven pumps, valves and cylinders are common with those used on large, Caterpillar track-type tractors.

■ For improved serviceability, all hydraulic pumps are mounted ona single pump drive.

3 Case Drain Filtration is includedthroughout the hydraulic system toprotect against contamination. Easilyaccessed for serviceability, sevenfilters in total protect the hydraulicpumps, fan motor and axle oil coolercircuit.

■ Optional high pressure screens areavailable as an upgrade to the casedrain filtration package. ThisDeluxe Filtration package placeshigh pressure screens on the outputside of the hydraulic pumps andfan motor, further protecting thehydraulic system fromcontamination.

4 Load Sensing Steering with STICControl System is a revolutionarysystem that integrates steering andtransmission into a single controller.The variable displacement pumpmaximizes machine performance bydirecting power through the steeringsystem only when needed.

■ Simple side-to-side motions of the operator’s left arm turn the machine right or left.

■ Transmission shifting forward, neutral, or reverse is controlled by the operator’s fingers, and gear selection is controlled by the operator’s thumb.

5 Vital Information Display System(VIDS) is the standard display systemthat provides information on themachine’s major components andsystems. In the event that a problemoccurs on the machine, the VIDSprovides pertinent information thatleads to a more accurate diagnosisand a reduction of overall downtime.VIDS configuration supports:

■ Gauge displays fuel tank leveland temperatures for, enginecoolant, power train andhydraulic oil. Tachometer is ananalog gauge with digital readoutfor gear selection.

■ Two language (English and any one of 17 other languages), 40-character text display instantly communicates machine problems.
